Prepare for an Internship
Set goals
Setting out to learn more about art and fine arts can be incredibly eye-opening. Don’t forget to set out with at least some goals like these!
- Push your boundaries by being open to new or unfamiliar art forms and having a more expansive view of your field.
- Consider and try new projects that you haven’t worked on before to explore the possibilities of different paths.
- On a personal, and soft skill level, work on personal aspects to grow as a person and employee.
- Seek out mentors or professionals in the field you may want to base a similar path to.
Understand the benefits
- Exposure to various cultural art standards. There are different art styles anywhere you go, working within them can make you better and be more accessible to more people without sacrificing your style.
- Networking within the field. By establishing yourself as an artist in another country, you will have the chance to work with known artists who will provide insight into how to be successful in that country.
- Invaluable hands-on experience. The art world is competitive, and having professional international experience can help you in your career pursuits.
- Practice your craft and grow your portfolio. Does it even need explaining?
Things to know
There’s plenty to know and prep once you have an internship! Here are a few basics you’ll find across the board.
- Accommodations - Some programs may offer housing while others don’t—make sure to check for it either way.
- Cost of living - The expenses of countries are another important thing to know. Make a budget and stick to it.
- Culture - Being aware of and open to the inevitable cultural differences! It’s the best way to get out of your internship.
- Daily life - Along with the cultural aspects of the host country, your work schedule is something to be aware of ASAP.
