Adelante Abroad offers five-week summer research placements at a major university in Edinburgh for psychology students interested in political, educational, and experimental psychology. Research Areas: Political Psychology: Focuses on social perceptions related to political decision-making and leadership, as well as traits associated with adverse childhood experiences. Educational Psychology: Examines bias-based discrimination, student identity, and social justice, and their impact on student performance and well-being. Travel to the islands of Fiji to learn about coral reefs, island customs, and the cultural ecology that links them together. This six-week program provides interns with an up close and personal immersion into the Fijian way of life and Fiji's marine ecosystems. Training for the project takes place in the capital city of Suva on Viti Levu. There, interns will meet with world-renowned reef ecologist Helen Sykes to complete their training. They will learn how to lay transects and how to observe and record key indicator species that they will encounter on the reefs. Once training is finished, interns will depart for one of the Institute for Global Studies' chosen research locations. Currently, IGS is conducting surveys on the islands of Taveuni and Beqa. They will live with a Fijian family, providing them with insight into Fijian culture in a way that books cannot render. What makes this immersion special is that villagers retain a uniquely Fijian perspective and practice many of the subsistence patterns of their ancestors. As English is the primary language of instruction in schools, most villagers can converse in the language.

This is an opportunity to help protect sea turtles and their eggs while learning more about these magnificent creatures alongside a dedicated marine biologist. You will assist a local team with the conservation and protection of up to four of the seven different species of sea turtles: loggerhead turtle, hawksbill turtle, green turtle, and leatherback turtle. As a turtle sanctuary volunteer, you will help in caring for injured animals, moving eggs to safe hatcheries, and collecting and processing biometric data. Your tasks will largely depend on your level of experience and the time of the year. This placement is aimed at those who have a good level of scientific knowledge. You must be adaptable, enthusiastic, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty. A basic level of Spanish is also helpful for this project.
