Traveling abroad is far from the only excuse we can use to get us off the couch and out in the wild. Being in the classroom or volunteering in one thing, but gaining real-deal professional skills is another.

Low cost and practically free internships abroad

You won’t break the bank thanks to these cheap internships abroad!

Dive into a new culture while interning abroad. In fact, more and more commonly, students from all over the world are opting to hit the road (or air) to complete internships. It’s an excellent way to test-drive both living and working abroad all while gaining reputable professional experience. Read on to learn more about inexpensive internships abroad, how you can find one, and where you should go.

Can I find free internships abroad?

You can certainly find free internships abroad. Better yet—you can even find paid internships abroad (and we’re happy to tell you all about them!). Further, in some countries (ahem...France), it’s the law that interns must be paid. Not many countries have such laws, but it could be worth your while to know where you might be paid for your labor if you are otherwise unable to fund an internship overseas. On the other end of the spectrum, certain organizations might expect you to move to the expensive city of Geneva and intern for free (cough, the World Health Organization, cough). It really depends on who you want to intern with and where you want to carry it out. What’s slightly complicated about internships abroad are local labor laws. To be paid, you have to legally be in the country. And that takes more than a stamp upon touchdown at the airport.

That being said, companies and organizations most often have to sponsor you. More often than not, students pay to have their international internships coordinated for them. This, my friend, might be one of the reasons why free internships can be few and far between. Understanding more about the cost and fees relevant to international internships will help you make a game plan for finding inexpensive internships abroad—ones that offer great value and service but won’t make you go broke.

4 more tips to keep your international internship costs down

Low cost and practically free internships abroad

Internships, especially unpaid ones, can get a bit pricey sometimes. Keep a few of these points in mind to realize your inexpensive internship abroad.

  • Tip #1. Rent a room in a shared apartment or flat. This is not the time to try out living solo—you’re already forking out costs for other overhead things, so try to minimize what you’re spending on your rent / accommodations. Renting a room with other international interns will save you money and provide you with a more autonomous, yet community-oriented experience.
  • Tip #2. Book a round-trip ticket. You know, one way tickets are almost always more expensive than if you book the round trip ticket from the get-go. If possible, fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays—the cheapest days of the week!
  • Tip #3. Walk or bike to work. Save on those taxis, Lyfts, Ubers, et. al and other pricy transit options by walking or biking to the office. It’s an invigorating start to the day which will help you maintain your focus even through your afternoon slump. What’s more, you’ll have the opportunity to take in more of the scenery too—get to know your neighbors!
  • Tip #4. Pack your lunch. Eating out adds up real quick. By brown-paper-bagging it, you will have more money to spend on other fun activities! Since eating out can be a great opportunity to get to know your new coworkers in more relaxed setting, we recommend mixing up your lunch options—leftovers one day, a bite and a bond with coworkers the next. Just keep an eye on your spending so you don’t go overboard!
