<p>I established a relationship with the organization when I first came to volunteer, keeping in mind that I would be there for 6 weeks, and ended up staying for 6 months.</p>
<p>My boss stands out as one of the biggest role models in my life, and I aspire to be a badass boss lady like her one day! The other driving factor was that I realized I would get to do what I love every day and call it work. This includes working with horses, people, and in nature, and living on a farm!</p>
<h4>Describe a typical day at work.</h4>

<p>My days are very varied, which I love. My main focus is with the horses—keeping them exercised, looked after, and well loved! I also do a lot of natural horsemanship with them and back all the young horses that we breed here.</p>
<p>I have taught many people to ride, including my grooms, local students, my boss's niece and nephews, and game scouts.</p>
<p>Some days, I work closely with the livestock, doing routine check-ins, dipping and pest control, deworming, wound treatment, tagging, and pregnancy checks on the cattle.</p>
<p>I spend a lot of time with the volunteers who come, especially the equine-focused ones, coordinating their days and the work they will do with the horses. I share my knowledge with them about natural horsemanship and my training methods, and have in turn learnt a lot from them about different methods of working and riding horses.</p>
<p>I help my boss with the marketing as well, mainly running the social media and putting together content.</p>
<p>Some days when things are quieter I like to go on drives around the ranch helping check in on waterholes, boreholes or visiting the elephants.</p>
<h4>What is your favorite part of your job?</h4>
<p>Each one of the horses feels like my own, and I love them as if they were mine. I have a special bond with each one and have the opportunity to compete with them in my showjumping and endurance competitions!</p>
<p>This is closely followed by being able to live in the bush, away from city life. Life is simple, the food is farm fresh, and every morning I get to have my tea looking out at the waterhole with wildlife coming in to drink.</p>
<h4>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h4>
<p>My degree in marketing has helped me assist with the marketing decisions that we make within the company, as well as make helpful contributions to business and management discussions.</p>
<p>My international travel helps me communicate with guests and volunteers visiting, as we can almost always find common ground to talk about.</p>
<p>My current diploma in equine nutrition is helping me better understand horse care, not only nutritionally but also from an anatomy perspective as well.</p>
<h4>What challenges do you often face, and how do you overcome them?</h4>
<p>Sometimes I can feel overwhelmed when there are too many things on my plate, as being involved in so many facets can sometimes make me feel pulled apart by all the limbs. To overcome this, I set goals, even if they are small, so that instead of feeling overwhelmed by something big, I can see all the little achievements I have made towards making the big thing happen.</p>
<p>I also had the opportunity to study in the US, but now that I am home in Zimbabwe, I leave many good friends and family behind, whom I miss. I try to visit them as often as I can and call them regularly so they remain a part of my life.</p>
<h4>What are some current projects you are working on?</h4>
<p>As mentioned in my bio, I am striving to get endurance as a sport established in Zimbabwe and hope to ride under the Zimbabwean flag next year.</p>
<p>Another project where I feel as though I give back is working with mounted police and prison units in Zimbabwe—securing donations for them and providing extra training, as I can see their passion for working with their horses, but I know they sometimes struggle to provide.</p>
<p>I am also within myself working on setting monthly goals, physical and emotional goals that help me stay focused on the things that I want to work on, even if it means only moving forward step by step.</p>
<h4>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h4>
<p>That the world is waiting for you—all you have to do is take that leap.</p>
<p>Growing up on a farm and in a small town where so many people never leave, it can be easy to be sucked into "small town syndrome," where people are scared to leave what they know.</p>
<p>I would tell myself not to be scared and take every opportunity that comes my way with an open heart, and not to be scared to fail because there's always something to learn from failure.</p>
<h4>What makes Cawston Encounters special?</h4>
<p>You really do end your stay here feeling as though you were part of the family. Whether as a guest or volunteer, we eat meals together and share stories, and get into meaningful discussions every day.</p>
<p>Many of our guests and volunteers come back to visit us, and some of the volunteers I have worked with over the years really do feel like best friends to me. Genuine connection, I think, is something most visitors leave feeling they have made.</p>
<h4>Why should someone choose Cawston Encounters over competitors?</h4>
<p>I think our organization is a worthy choice over any other because of its authenticity and commitment to ethical wildlife conservation. It goes to great lengths to protect the wildlife and nature that cover it, which is often overlooked as just a day-to-day procedure. It is a working ranch with many facets that make it thrive.</p>
<p>It is also set in a beautiful area of Zimbabwe where, when you visi,t you get to experience a blend of culture and nature. You interact with the people who run it and work on it closely, and you are immersing yourself in the bush every day.</p>
<p>The warthogs are on the lawn eating with the chickens!? Where else do you get to see that?!</p>
<h4>What hopes do you have for the future of Cawston Encounters?</h4>
<p>I hope to see our volunteer program grow so we can share what we do with more people, especially young people. I think we set a good example of what ethical wildlife conservation and management look like, and I would like to see this idea imprinted on our volunteers.</p>
<p>I also hope to see the populations of species across the property grow!</p>
<h4>Are there any developments with Cawston Encounters that you would like to share with us?</h4>
<p>Our equine herd has 5 youngsters, of which three are coming on under saddle and will be ready for safari work by 2027!</p>
<p>We have an anti-poaching manager who started this year and is making huge leaps in controlling poaching. He is also running a regenerative cattle-grazing scheme alongside his work, which integrates well with habitat management for wildlife.</p>
<h4>What makes Cawston Encounters easy to market to potential participants?</h4>
<p>We have something for everyone! It is family-friendly, and there are so many activities to get involved in. Someone of any age, gender, or skill set could get involved.</p>
<p>It is also beautiful! For someone who wants to experience Africa, they really get a taste of Africa and all it has to offer—culture, food, sunsets, and animals</p>
<h4>What is Cawston Encounters’ mission, and how do you continue to work toward it?</h4>
<p>Our mission is to continue protecting the land and the creatures that live upon it. This is achieved in so many ways, including anti-poaching, education to surrounding locals about the importance of conservation, and maintaining the land's health through erosion control, invasive species control, water control and maintenance, and parasite control.</p>
<h4>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h4>
<p>I hope participants have a better understanding of how conservation management works and its importance. I also hope they leave feeling they have put their time and effort into something that really matters.</p>
<p>I hope the equine program participants leave with a special bond with at least one horse and feel they made improvements in how the horses work.</p>
<p>I also hope each participant leaves feeling they learned at least one new thing or skill!</p>
<h4>How do you help support participants?</h4>
<p>I am the person that volunteers can speak to on a deeper level. If they have a problem or need advice, they typically come to me first to talk it out.</p>
<p>For younger participants who have just left school and never worked, I "hold their hand" where necessary and encourage them to get fully immersed in the experience.</p>
<h4>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h4>
<p>I think travelling teaches you a lot about perspective and opens your mind to seeing things in different ways. Every culture you get to immerse yourself in teaches you something different.</p>
<p>For example, in Mongolia, the culture taught me about being welcoming, and people want to share with you, but in America, the culture was much more fast-paced and focused on putting oneself first.</p>
<p>Neither is right nor long, but you can learn from both and let certain places and people mold you into who you want to be.</p>

<h4>What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?</h4>
<p>Try not to be too structured in planning your trip. Plans change, and different opportunities may arise. Don't try to stick to an itinerary just to stick to it, because opportunities may come up on the ground. Go with the flow and be open to new experiences and listening to local advice!</p>
<h4>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h4>
<p>Meaningful travel is about how your soul feels when you are there and when you return. It should feel positive energy, whether it be in the form of excitement or peace, and your heart should feel fuller at the end.</p>
<p>You might pick a place to travel with a goal in mind, such as to see something specific or do something specific, but it's all the learning about the place that you do along the way that matters, and it's the locals who are your best teachers.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>What inspired me to go abroad was partly a requirement of my university, as we have to either complete an internship or study abroad for one semester.</p>
<p>From the beginning, I knew that I really wanted to study abroad, ideally in a place where I could also surf, since that is a big passion of mine.</p>
<p>Students from previous cohorts had already done the exchange in Bali, and the program had a very good reputation at my university and was extremely popular. It was less about whether I wanted to go and more about being selected to go.</p>
<p>In the end, I was one of the three students chosen for Bali, and I honestly haven’t regretted it.</p>
<h3>Why did you choose <a title="undefined" href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/studyinbali rel="" target="_self" class="clickTracker" rev="domainID=6&amp;refererType=1&amp;refererID=3416&amp;abbreviation=CSCT&amp;clientID=51514" data-ga-client="StudyInBali" data-contentlink="">StudyInBali</a>?</h3>
<p>I chose this specific program organization because I wanted to study sports science, and in Indonesia, it’s actually not that easy to find a place where you can study this field.<br>Realistically, the only university offering this option is Udayana University, combined with Physiotherapy, which made it the most suitable choice for me.</p>
<p>Since the StudyInBali program is the one that collaborates with Udayana University and offers courses in physiotherapy and sports science, there really wasn’t another comparable option.<br>For my academic goals, this program was simply the best.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part of Bali, Indonesia?</h3>
<p>My favorite part of the whole experience was definitely the surfing.</p>
<p>Surfing was actually one of the main reasons why I chose Bali in the first place, and the swell there was simply amazing. Even during the wet season, there were still great waves, which was perfect for slowing down a bit after the first months of the semester.</p>
<p>During the dry season, especially at the beginning of the semester, the swell consistency was incredible; you could basically surf every single day. What I really loved was how well the program fit around surfing.</p>
<p>I could surf for about one and a half hours in the morning, go to class afterwards, and then often go for another surf in the evening. Overall, it exceeded all my expectations and allowed me to fully live my sporting passion alongside studying sports science.</p>

<h3>What made your experience in Bali extraordinary?</h3>
<p>What made my experience abroad extraordinary was the fact that I was able to complete 30 ECTS credits in Bali and fully transfer them back to my home university.<br>At the same time, the whole experience felt more like a “studycation”, a mix of studying and being on holiday.</p>
<p>What I really loved was stepping out of my comfort zone and not just experiencing Bali as a tourist, but actually immersing myself in a completely different and very exotic culture.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff supported us extremely well throughout the entire program. Right from the beginning, we were added to a WhatsApp group with the StudyInBali coordinator as well as the most important lecturers, which made communication very easy and direct.</p>
<p>Every Sunday, we received a weekly overview with all our upcoming classes, including which sessions were taking place, which ones were cancelled, and where they would be held. Since the program included many excursions and sports activities, and locations often changed, this was especially helpful.</p>
<p>The StudyInBali coordinator was also very present on site and always approachable. If there were ever a problem, we could contact her anytime via WhatsApp.<br>Because she works closely with international students but is also Balinese, she was a great bridge between us and the local community and could organize things smoothly with local partners.</p>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>Honestly, I don’t really regret anything about my time abroad.</p>
<p>Looking back now that the semester is over, I’m actually very proud of how I approached it and how much I made out of the experience. Everything worked out really well, and I feel like I made the right decisions throughout the semester.</p>
<p>If there’s one small thing I would do differently, it would be the timing of visits from family and friends. I had visitors quite early on, within the first three weeks of the semester, and in hindsight it might have been better to schedule those visits later in the semester, or even towards the end.</p>
<p>The first weeks are quite intense, with so much going on, and having visitors can disrupt your routine a bit. So that’s the only thing I would slightly adjust. But overall, the experience was great and I wouldn’t change much.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical weekday for me started very early. I would wake up at 5 a.m. and be in the water by 6 a.m., surfing for about one and a half hours until 7:30. After that, I had time to change, and then I would ride my motorbike for about an hour from Canggu to Denpasar to get to the university.</p>
<p>Once there, we had classes from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., so around four hours of lectures. In between, there were always local snacks provided. After classes, we usually grabbed something to eat, and then sometimes went to the gym for about two hours, not every day, but at least once a week.</p>
<p>Afterwards, it was another hour ride back to Canggu, where we lived. By then it was already evening, and if I still had enough energy, I sometimes squeezed in an evening surf session.<br>The day usually ended with good food, you can dine really good in Bali.</p>
<p>While many of my fellow students went out partying, that wasn’t really my thing, because late nights don’t mix well with early surf sessions. I stuck to a surf-focused routine instead, which honestly did me a lot of good.</p>
<p>Since I'm a former athlete this lifestyle fitted me much better.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>

<p>What I enjoyed most in my free time was surfing.</p>
<p>We had quite a lot of free time in Bali; every Friday was off, plus the weekend. During those three free days, I often went on small surf trips, exploring different surf spots and different parts of the island. I really enjoyed these mini surf trips, discovering new waves and getting to know new places.</p>
<p>In the middle of the semester, we also had a study break of about two weeks with no classes. During that time, we were able to travel even further, sometimes flying to other islands nearby to explore more remote areas and search for less crowded line-ups.</p>
<p>Overall, my free time mainly revolved around surfing. Coming from Switzerland, where we don’t have the ocean or easy access to surf, this made the semester in Bali especially meaningful for me.<br></p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>At the beginning, we decided as a group of students to stay together in the same guesthouse, where we shared rooms.&nbsp;</p>
<p>For me, it was important to keep my expenses low during the semester, and once I couldn’t find a roommate anymore, since most people preferred single rooms, which is totally understandable, I decided to go my own way.</p>
<p>After that, I stayed mostly in dormitories and shared rooms, which were much more affordable. What I really liked about that was that everyone had their own rhythm, so I could wake up early for surfing without feeling bad about it.</p>
<p>It also gave me a stronger sense of exploration and stepping out of my comfort zone, constantly looking for new places to stay. In a way, it felt a bit like being on a surf trip, because I kept changing locations.</p>
<p>That lifestyle actually suited me really well; it gave me a lot of energy and made the whole experience feel more dynamic.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>Future students should know that sunscreen is very expensive in Bali.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Women might also want to bring a pirate-style headscarf, because the helmets you rent with the scooter will be too big. And if the helmet is wobbling on your head, it can actually be more dangerous than riding without one. I would recommend buying your own helmet anyway. There are many helmet shops there at a fair price, and you should make sure the helmet has the SNI certification. Especially tourists can easily get involved in traffic accidents.</p>
<p>I would also bring a small lockbox for the scooter key that you can attach to the motorbike, so you can lock your key inside while you go surfing. Some older scooter models can be easily broken into, so it’s better not to leave your phone just sitting on the scooter.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Tampons are also very expensive, so it might be better to bring a pack from your home country.</p>
<p>And in general, Balinese people are very friendly, so it’s good to know that most of them really mean well and are kind to you.</p>
<h3>Would you recommend <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/studyinbali/programs/semester-abroad-sports-physiotherapy-170208 rel="" target="_self" class="link">Semester Abroad: Sports &amp; Physiotherapy</a> to others? Why?</h3>
<p>Yes, I would definitely recommend the program to others, mainly because it is kind of the only real option. If you try to do everything directly through Udana University, it becomes much more difficult. You have to handle the visa application yourself, organize a recommendation letter from the university, and manage all the other steps on your own.&nbsp;</p>
<p>When you go through a program, like StudyInBali, you are basically supported from the beginning. The entire organizational process is taken care of and supported, which is a big advantage because Bali has a lot of bureaucracy, and things do not always run smoothly. There are often many complicated processes, especially with visas, and having support makes everything much easier.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Also, this Bali program is actually one of the only ones offered in the field of sports science and physiotherapy, so if you want to study or work in that area, it is really the most practical and accessible option.</p>

<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>The biggest benefits of studying or traveling abroad are that it pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps you grow. It expands your horizon because you see things you never thought even existed. You encounter different perspectives on life and different ways of seeing and living life. It really helps you think outside the box.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>It brought me closer to the realization, or showed me, that I could actually live abroad for a longer period of time. I had never really considered that before. I thought I was Swiss and would always live in Switzerland. But strangely, now that the semester is over, it feels like a crazy, colorful dream.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The study routine here continued so seamlessly and intensely, and I know the routines at home so well; everything feels so familiar, that sometimes it’s hard to fully grasp that it all happened at the same time. It feels more like a shift in dimensions when you go from Bali to Switzerland and back, as if they are two completely different realities.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>For me, meaningful travel does not mean just spending two weeks somewhere, sipping a coconut, and then going back. It means truly immersing yourself in the local culture, learning about it, and respecting it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>A meaningful trip is one that has a long-lasting impact on your own life and changes you in some way.</p>

<p>What made my experience abroad extraordinary was the combination of cultural immersion, personal growth, and meaningful connections. Living in a new country challenged me to adapt, communicate in Spanish daily, and step outside my comfort zone.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The friendships I formed, the local traditions I experienced, and the supportive environment at Instituto Hemingway made my time abroad not only educational but truly unforgettable.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>One thing I wish I had done differently during my time abroad is to have explored more of the surrounding regions and smaller towns outside of Bilbao.&nbsp;</p>
<p>While I fully enjoyed the city and its culture, venturing further would have given me an even deeper understanding of Spanish life, traditions, and cuisine. I also wish I had practiced more Spanish with locals outside of class to improve my fluency faster.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day abroad in Bilbao started with attending my Spanish classes at Instituto Hemingway, where lessons were interactive and focused on speaking, listening, and grammar. After class, I would participate in cultural activities, explore the city, or practice Spanish with locals. Evenings were often spent enjoying the local cuisine, walking along the river, or socializing with other students.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This routine balanced learning, cultural immersion, and personal exploration, making every day engaging and rewarding.</p>

<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>During my free time abroad in Bilbao, I loved exploring the city and discovering its unique blend of modern and traditional architecture. I enjoyed visiting local cafes, trying Spanish cuisine, and walking along the river. I also spent time with friends from the program, attended cultural events, and explored nearby towns and natural areas.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Practicing Spanish with locals in everyday situations was both fun and helpful for improving my language skills while fully experiencing life in Spain.</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>

<p>One thing every future participant should know about the Instituto Hemingway program is that it offers a perfect balance of structured language learning and cultural immersion. While the classes are engaging and personalized, participants should also be ready to actively practice Spanish outside of class.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Taking full advantage of the cultural activities, interacting with locals, and exploring Bilbao and its surroundings will greatly enhance the learning experience and make the program truly unforgettable.</p>

<p>The biggest benefit of traveling abroad is the opportunity for personal growth and cultural understanding. Living in a new country challenges you to adapt, communicate in another language, and navigate unfamiliar situations. It broadens your perspective, builds independence and confidence, and allows you to form meaningful connections with people from different backgrounds.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Experiencing daily life in another culture also gives a deeper appreciation for diversity and teaches skills that last a lifetime.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>Now that I’m back home, my time abroad has had a lasting impact on my life. I feel more confident, independent, and open‑minded, especially when facing new challenges. Living in Spain improved my Spanish skills and taught me how to adapt to different cultures and ways of life.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The experience also changed my perspective on the world and helped me appreciate diversity, making me more curious and motivated in both my personal and professional life.</p>

<p>I have long been inspired by organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and their commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare in underserved and resource-limited settings. For nearly four years, I have been volunteering in healthcare while studying medicine, which has solidified my desire to work with diverse patient populations and address health inequities on a global scale.</p>
<p>Going abroad was especially exciting to me because it offered the opportunity to apply my clinical knowledge and skills in a new environment with challenges very different from those I encountered at home. I was eager to learn how healthcare is delivered in settings with limited resources, to adapt to different cultural and clinical practices, and to gain a deeper understanding of the social and structural factors that influence health.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This experience represented an important step in aligning my academic training with my long-term goal of contributing meaningfully to global health initiatives.</p>

<p>I chose International Medical Aid because it offered a uniquely immersive experience that emphasized both cultural engagement and meaningful clinical education. Through the program in Mombasa, Kenya, I was able to learn deeply about the region’s history, culture, language, and social structures, and to understand how each of these factors shapes healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.</p>
<p>In addition to supporting my travel from the United States to Kenya, IMA provided comprehensive in-country support that allowed me to focus my time and energy on what I found most valuable—learning, service, and clinical growth. The program offered a strong balance of structured educational sessions, hands-on community engagement, and mentorship from highly skilled and dedicated physicians. I also had meaningful opportunities to serve local communities and schools, which reinforced the importance of culturally informed and community-centered care.</p>
<p>What further distinguished IMA for me was its continued support beyond the program itself. Their guidance as I progress academically and prepare to apply to medical school has helped me further develop the skills, perspective, and professionalism necessary to one day serve as a healthcare provider in underserved communities. <h3>What was your favorite part about Mombasa?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about Mombasa, Kenya, was the people I had the privilege to interact with.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Everyone was warm and excited for us to be there. I especially remember our tour guide, Abraham, who drove around the city with us, teaching us about the rich history of Kenya. He took us to many local shops and explained how Kenya, similar to the US, was a melting pot of many different European, African, and tribal cultures.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>The staff at IMA truly made my experience extraordinary. Christabell, Hilda, and Pherris were all amazing mentors. Of course, I can not forget about the kitchen staff who allowed us to experience the local cuisine in a safe and delicious way. They took requests and even made birthday cakes for those celebrating their special day abroad.&nbsp;</p>
<p>From the very beginning, the team at IMA was intent on supporting me. Christabell, my assigned mentor, answered my and my mom’s questions. I felt very supported by the staff as the encourage me to learn and experience things.</p>

<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>The only aspect of my time abroad that I would change is the duration—I would have liked to stay longer. Unfortunately, due to my academic course load and other commitments, spending an entire semester abroad was not feasible, though I completely understand the appeal. I am deeply grateful for the time I was able to spend abroad; however, an additional few weeks would have allowed me to engage more fully in each rotation and make a more lasting, large-scale impact.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In order to make a serious change that is accepted by the community I am working in I must have a deep understanding of their culture and what resources are avalible too me. With only one week per rotation, my experience often felt like an introduction rather than an opportunity for deeper involvement. I had myriad ideas, including teaching a consent and sexual health clinic, but this would take much more time than I had to plan and implement.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>

<p>Typically, I would wake up around 6 a.m. and begin my day with a short run, followed by reading and a cup of coffee. After showering, I would head to breakfast around 7 a.m., where I enjoyed a wide variety of foods—ranging from American classics like pancakes and eggs to more traditional local dishes. It was not uncommon to find beans or other vegetables on the menu alongside fresh fruit, including the best mangoes I have ever had.</p>
<p>After breakfast, I would head to the hospital for the clinical rotation I had selected. Depending on the week, I observed a range of orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures, including joint replacements, femur repairs, and tumor removals. Following a late lunch, the afternoon was often action-packed. My favorite experiences, however, were visits to local schools, where I helped teach workshops on hygiene, women’s health, and mental health.</p>
<p>The evenings, although more relaxed, were equally as enjoyable and valuable as the day. We had free time to explore the local restaurants and bond with our fellow interns as we shared about the day’s experiences.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>During my free time abroad, I most enjoyed connecting with my fellow interns. In addition to becoming regulars at a local fitness center, we shared countless meals together—often enjoying some of the most delicious seafood I have ever had—accompanied by laughter and stories from our time in Kenya and beyond.</p>
<p>It was especially meaningful to work alongside such a diverse group of individuals. While we were all pre-health students, each person arrived with a unique journey shaped by distinct passions and experiences. I found that no one had less dedication or drive than another; rather, our goals were equally valuable yet individually defined. Some envisioned careers in major cities, while others were drawn to practicing medicine in rural or underserved communities.&nbsp;</p>
<p>We all had unique educational experiences, and each person took something different away. I especially enjoyed hearing all the people had to say during the weekly clinical debrief sessions.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>We were fortunate to have very comfortable accommodations during our stay. IMA owns a small residential complex that includes intern housing, dining facilities, and shared communal spaces, including a pool. The residence was consistently clean, and we enjoyed many meals that were freshly prepared on site, which contributed greatly to a welcoming and supportive living environment.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I appreciated these accomodations becuase it provided a safe and comfortable place that removed much of the normal strains of travel so we could focus on what we were learning and the care we were providing.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>One important thing every future participant should know before beginning the program is the value of approaching the experience with flexibility and an open mind. While the program provides strong structure and support, the most meaningful learning often comes from adapting to new environments, cultural differences, and unexpected moments.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Being open to these experiences allows participants to fully engage with both the clinical and community aspects of the program and ultimately gain far more from their time abroad.</p>

<p>I think the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is the chance to step completely outside your comfort zone and see the world—and yourself—from a new perspective. Being in a different country forces you to adapt, communicate across cultures, and appreciate ways of life that are different from your own.&nbsp;</p>
<p>For me, living in Mombasa allowed me to experience firsthand how culture, community, and healthcare intersect, and it gave me a deeper understanding of people’s lives beyond textbooks. At the same time, it challenged me to grow personally, build resilience, and connect with people I never would have met otherwise.</p>

<p>Now that I’m home, my time abroad has had a lasting impact on both my personal and professional life. Experiencing healthcare in Mombasa showed me how access to knowledge and education—or the lack thereof—can shape health outcomes and community well-being. It made me more aware of the challenges many people face in accessing reliable information and resources, and it has inspired me to think creatively about ways to share knowledge and support learning in my own community.&nbsp;</p>
<p>On a personal level, the experience strengthened my adaptability, cultural awareness, and confidence in unfamiliar situations. I returned home with a broader perspective, a deeper appreciation for diverse approaches to healthcare, and a renewed motivation to make a meaningful impact wherever I go.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>To me, meaningful travel is about more than just seeing new places—it’s about truly engaging with the people, culture, and community around you. It means stepping out of your comfort zone, listening, learning, and contributing in ways that matter, whether through service, education, or simply building relationships.&nbsp;</p>
<p>My time abroad in Mombasa felt meaningful because I wasn’t just a visitor; I was able to participate in local healthcare, teach workshops at schools, and connect with people in a way that was both educational and impactful.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?</h3>
<p>I wanted to gain new perspectives and new experiences. Going abroad challenges the way you have been taught to think and do things.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I wanted to go somewhere that was as different as possible from the US, and that was also related to healthcare. I wanted to be exposed to the struggles that people in other countries had to deal with on a daily basis, so that by seeing that, I could understand it better.</p>

<p>I chose IMA because it offered the best combination of location, internship, and cultural exposure. Kenya was perfect in the fact that it is very different from the US and offered a great learning experience.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The balance between interning at the hospital and getting to engage with the local culture was also ideal. I was exposed to so much at the hospital while also meeting locals and exploring the country.&nbsp;</p>
<p>IMA is also amazing on the logistical end of things. I never felt stressed or worried about food, transportation, housing, or any of the basics.</p>
<h3>What was your favorite part about Mombasa?</h3>
<p>My favorite part about Mombasa, Kenya, had to be the people. At the hospital, the doctors and nurses were so engaging and explained so much to us. I learned about different procedures and diseases, and they shared all the tips and tricks they knew from working in a healthcare setting with fewer resources. I became close with a medical student and a radiology tech there, and would meet them for dinner or to play soccer on the beach.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I would often find myself having conversations with strangers I would meet there. I never felt unsafe and always felt welcome there.</p>
<h3>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h3>
<p>Once again, the people. I'll focus more specifically on the IMA staff and other interns in the program. The mentors and staff at IMA not only take great care of you and make sure everything goes smoothly, but they also become your friends. It was amazing being able to talk about serious things that I would see in the hospital with them, but also be able to have conversations about lighter topics, like what they enjoyed the most in Mombasa.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Working in a hospital in a foreign country with other students your age was such a unique experience, and I made friendships that will last me a lifetime.</p>
<h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h3>
<p>The local staff made sure everything always ran smoothly. They made sure that the buses were on time and got everyone to and from the hospital every day.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I have a peanut allergy, so food can be difficult when traveling abroad; however, I never felt worried about it with IMA. The first day I told the kitchen staff about it, and they reassured me that they would make sure to not cross-contaminate and ensured the food was safe for me to eat.&nbsp;</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h3>
<p>I enjoyed my time abroad so much, and I would say that I explored Mombasa a decent amount, but I wish I did more.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Working in the hospital was tiring, so some days you had to go home and crash on the couch, but I wish that I had gotten out into the city more and made more local friends. I also wish I had taken more pictures with the people that I met there. I had plenty of pictures of the landscape, but I wish I had more with the friends I made.</p>
<h3>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h3>
<p>A typical day would start with breakfast at the residence and then heading straight to the hospital for our five-hour rotations. We'd get back around 2:00 pm most days, then there'd either be a clinical debrief, an organized activity to explore Mombasa, or just hanging out at the residence with the staff and other interns.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Then, after that dinner, I got to know my peers better. We'd take walks, hang out outside, and play cards.</p>
<h3>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h3>
<p>I enjoyed exploring Mombasa the most and meeting up with friends I made at the hospital. Multiple times, I met up with some of the guys from the radiology department to go play soccer on the beach. Those soccer games were some of the best times I had during my free time.</p>

<p>&nbsp;It was also really fun exploring the food scene there with a medical student we met. He guided us to the best local restaurants and ensured the food was peanut-free, which was very kind of him.&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h3>
<p>It was a residence where all of the interns stayed. Everyone had a roommate and shared bathrooms, but the rooms and bathrooms were always kept clean. I liked the common spaces that it had. There were multiple spots for the interns to sit around and talk, which I think helped form the amazing friendships. The rooms were spacious and always clean.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I think how well the staff kept the place clean and organized was one of the best parts.</p>
<h3>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h3>
<p>One thing every future participant should know is that you should be prepared to write down memories and events from every day. I never did this before, but started doing it because of the hospital rotations.&nbsp;</p>
<p>IMA gives you a notebook to write in, but I wish I brought one for my own personal thoughts and memories outside of the hospital as well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yes, this program is genuinely life-changing, especially for someone wanting to work in healthcare. This internship will show you what real hardship and struggle look like, but it will also fill you with so much love and care.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The things that you experience in Kenya broaden your perspective so much and ground you in what is important in life.</p>
<h3>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h3>
<p>I think the biggest benefit is being placed outside of your comfort zone because it forces you to change for the better. It teaches you how to adapt in new situations, not be so stuck in your way of doing things, and be exposed to totally new ways of thinking.&nbsp;</p>
<p>I think it makes you more understanding of other beliefs and perspectives, which in turn makes you a more loving individual.</p>
<h3>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h3>
<p>I am much more appreciative of the little things in my life. After meeting people who, by US standards, had little to nothing, were so happy and appreciative to live another day, I really realized what is important to me. I</p>
<p>&nbsp;have noticed myself prioritizing my relationships with my friends and family more and being okay when things do not go according to plan. I have become much more grounded and attribute that completely to my time in Kenya.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>It means embracing the culture and doing things that you would never expect yourself to do. This makes you someone with a wider range of experiences and a broader perspective, which I think makes you a wiser and more relatable human being. Taking full advantage of the time spent there is meaningful travel to me.</p>
