<p>I spent 10 years in the hospitality industry, learning what it truly means to care for people and create meaningful experiences. After a while, I felt ready for a new challenge—one that still centered on human connection.</p>
<p>SLImmersion was the perfect fit: it combines the same passion for service with the joy of helping learners grow, discover French culture, and feel supported throughout their journey.</p>
<h4>Describe a typical day at work.</h4>
<p>Not a day goes by without a new challenge. We’re a small yet highly versatile team, so I switch from teaching lessons to advising our students and designing the perfect immersive stay for them, to developing new programs for future learners.</p>
<p>Every day brings something new to learn, and that’s what I love about it.</p>

<h4>Why do you do what you do?</h4>
<p>I’m passionate about customer service and human connection. Helping students face real-life situations with confidence and giving them the tools to understand and be understood in French is incredibly rewarding. Seeing them grow, feel supported, and enjoy the learning process is what motivates me every day.</p>
<h4>What is your favorite part of your job?</h4>
<p>My favorite part of the job is learning something new every single day.</p>
<p>That’s the challenge that comes with changing careers. Each student, each immersion stay, and each new project brings a fresh perspective and a new lesson. This constant sense of discovery keeps me motivated, curious and genuinely excited about the work I do.</p>
<h4>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h4>
<p>I’ve lived a life of travel and exploration, so I deeply understand the curiosity and excitement that come with learning a new language and culture.</p>
<p>This international background helps me connect with our students, support their challenges, and design immersive experiences that truly reflect what it feels like to discover France from the inside.</p>
<h4>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h4>

<p>Coming from a fast-paced hospitality background, shifting to a role that involves more desk work brought its own challenges.</p>
<p>I had to learn to slow down, plan ahead and become more structured in my daily tasks. Little by little, I’ve developed new routines and tools that help me stay organised and focused, while still keeping the energy and responsiveness I gained from my previous career.</p>
<h4>What are some current projects you are working on?</h4>
<p>I’m currently developing new group travel experiences across France and Quebec, as well as working on our new learning solution, Immerse Language, which helps students learn French through cultural discovery on their phone, computer or tablet.</p>
<p>At the same time, I continue supporting our students with personalized guidance to help them find the perfect program.</p>
<h4>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h4>
<p>I’d tell my pre-travel self to stay open to every new experience, even the ones that seem intimidating at first.</p>
<p>Travel has a way of surprising you: the people you meet, the cultures you discover, and the unexpected moments that shape who you become. The more curious and flexible you are, the more meaningful each journey becomes.</p>
<p>Embracing uncertainty is often where the best memories and the most growth happen.</p>
<h4>Why should someone choose SLImmersion over competitors?</h4>

<p>Our mission is to offer meaningful French immersion experiences that help learners truly connect with the language and culture.</p>
<p>Since 2012, we’ve created tailor-made programs that combine personalised lessons, guided conversations and authentic daily life with a private tutor. Whether in one of the most beautiful regions of France or through our online immersive platform, we work every day to design welcoming, high-quality stays that support each student’s goals and make their learning journey unforgettable</p>
<h4>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h4>
<p>I hope participants leave our programs having discovered the “real” France—the places, people and everyday moments that aren’t always found in guidebooks.</p>
<p>More than anything, I want them to feel confident using French in real-life situations. Our immersions give them the chance to practice naturally, make genuine connections, and experience the language as it’s truly spoken. If they return home with new skills, new memories, and a deeper understanding of French culture, then we’ve succeeded.</p>

<h4>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h4>
<p>Traveling abroad is essential because it opens us to the world and reminds us that humanity has many different facets. But that, at the core, we are not so different after all.</p>
<p>In a time when we increasingly fear those who look or sound unfamiliar, meeting others, discovering their cultures, and understanding their daily realities becomes more important than ever. Travel encourages empathy, curiosity, and a sense of shared humanity that we can’t build by staying in our comfort zone.</p>
<h4>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h4>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, is about stepping into the world with curiosity rather than fear. It’s choosing to meet others with openness, embracing the idea that being surprised—and even challenged—is part of the experience.</p>
<p>When we travel with the intention to understand rather than judge, every encounter becomes an opportunity to grow. Meaningful travel is not just about seeing new places, but about letting people and cultures reshape the way we see ourselves and the world.</p>
<h4>What hopes do you have for the future of international education?</h4>
<p>I hope we return to a vision of international education where the goal is to develop curious, critical, and open minds. I want a future where everyone—regardless of background—has equal access to opportunities that allow them to grow, choose their path, and shape their own future.</p>
<p>Education should remain a right, not a privilege, and it should never be reduced to teaching some people how to be productive and others how to lead or dominate. True international education must inspire understanding, empowerment, and fairness for all.</p>

<h4>What inspired you to go abroad?</h4>
<p>This was not my first experience studying abroad. I have always loved traveling and experiencing new cultures (I'm a big foodie). I also adore languages.</p>
<p>I first studied abroad during a midyear program in Fall 2023 after being accepted to my home university, Brandeis, for Spring 2024. I spent my first semester in Florence, Italy, and returned to Italy (this time Sorrento) that summer to complete an Italian studies minor.</p>
<p>I love studying abroad and have been trying to do it every summer. The EU Studies Freiburg IES program was my first study abroad experience outside of Italy. German culture is quite different, yet familiar, since most of my cousins live near München. It was nice to visit my uncles.</p>
<p>I chose the IES program because it fulfilled my majors in European Cultural Studies and the major I am currently developing at my school, International Relations (since Brandeis does not have an IR program). I have never learned so much in such a short time! We studied the 7 branches of the EU and took field trips to the EU Parliament, EEAS, Council of Ministers, the Commission, and many other places across Europe.</p>
<p>If you really want to see Europe and learn about its political and economic systems, this is the course for you.</p>

<p>I chose this specific program, the IES EU studies, because it intersects with my three majors: European Cultural Studies, Politics, and International Relations, which I am creating through Brandeis University's IIM program.</p>
<p>One course in particular, International Order and the Black Sea Region, sounded especially interesting to me, especially since that has been a point of tension for ages, most notably now.</p>
<h4>What was your favorite part about Europe?</h4>
<p>Freiburg is lovely. It is near Switzerland and Strasbourg, as we learned from our EU Parliament trip, and close to the Black Forest, but my favorite part of Strasbourg is the cathedral. The Romantic and Gothic architecture, combined with the red stone, is purely stunning. I am not religious, but I loved visiting the nearby cafè, sitting in the shadow of this ancient edifice. It was fun to watch people, mostly locals, as they visited the restaurants or went to the market around the church.</p>
<p>Another aspect of Freiburg is its water features. My assigned apartment was on a lake, and numerous university students swam and sunbathed daily. The most unique aspect of Freiburg is its Bächle, a minuscule, man-made channels that run through the main city; here, locals wade with their cocktails after a long day's work, or children eagerly run, trailing their toy boats through the current.</p>
<h4>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h4>
<p>The field trips were astonishing.</p>
<p>We spent a day in Strasbourg, did a city tour, had lunch, and then went to the EU Parliament. We traveled to Brussels and visited the EEAS, Commission, and Council of Ministers, but also had plenty of time to see the city and of course try plenty of fries, waffles, and chocolate. I even saw The Cult in concert there! <a title="undefined" href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/ies-abroad rel="" target="_self" class="clickTracker" rev="domainID=6&amp;refererType=1&amp;refererID=3376&amp;abbreviation=CSCT&amp;clientID=107" data-ga-client="IES Abroad" data-contentlink=""><ins>IES Abroad</ins></a> has every minute of the trip organized, so it is very easy to know when you attend lectures and when you are free to catch dinner with friends. It is very busy, though.</p>
<p>We also visited Paris and saw the other IES center, and visited the Ukrainian mission. We were far away from the tourist attractions, so meals were delicious and amazingly inexpensive (€3 appetizers!). I had a horrible experience in Paris in early July, but seeing it with friends entirely rewrote this for me.</p>
<p>Lastly, we visited Stockholm. We attended lectures on green energy and what life is like in Sweden from birth until death, which was a fascinating model. We then visited the Swedish Parliament and talked with a representative. On our last few days in Stockholm after the lectures, IES took us to the Vasa Museum and out for a traditional Swedish dinner.</p>
<h4>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h4>

<p>The IES staff was amazing. They helped us get organized immediately. If you needed a fan (Freiburg doesn't have AC), Dörte would get you one. She had almost everything, but if she did not have something, she could point you to where to get it.</p>
<p>I love talking with Isik. She is from Turkey but spent several years in Italy, so we spoke Italian and bonded over shared experiences. She was our guide for the Brussels-Paris week. She knew all of the students and was just someone you could go to and talk about anything.</p>
<p>Lejla Zjakic and Karin Jors are also fabulous. Karin is even from the US and studied abroad in Germany before working for IES, so she really understands the students' perspectives and the culture shock experience. They led hiking groups and activities, and helped me track down an amazing waffle stand.</p>
<h4>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h4>
<p>I shut myself in my room to study too much. I was trying to read in depth all of the readings (important for the Political Seminar class, but a waste of time for the Black Sea Course).</p>
<p>I should not have stressed so much on the Black Sea class, but should have learned geography before I left the US. Understanding the countries in that region and their histories is very important.</p>
<h4>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h4>

<p>That is a difficult question because in the end, we were travelling so frequently.</p>
<p>For the days I would study at IES, I would wake up, eat a yogurt, and either take the tram or take a 40-minute hike to class with my new friend Mathias, stopping at a bakery along the way. We would have a fun lecture and interactive activity in the EU seminar course (one time, I was supposed to play a member of Parliament to help pass a bill).</p>
<p>After this class, I would go to the café on the corner and have a sandwich and gelato, sometimes a donut. Then, I would go to my Black Sea class. In the late afternoon, students study and go swimming at the lake.</p>
<p>In the evening, I would go to the grocery store across from the apartment and buy fresh pasta, yogurt, Barilla Bolognese (surprisingly super delicious), and anything else.</p>
<h4>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h4>
<p>I loved exploring.</p>
<p>I liked tracking down the good chocolate places in Brussels. I enjoyed searching for the best Käsespätzle in Freiburg. I liked scouring the city for the perfect green shoes on a 2-hour break before the model EU final exam (the big final Exam was a model EU, yes). I liked finding a pretty Bächle boat to bring back to my friends in the US.</p>
<h4>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h4>
<p>I lived in a shared apartment with German students. There were two bathrooms, a common kitchen space, and a shared balcony. It was a massive relief to me that they were all single bedrooms. They had locks if needed, but I never had to worry about either my security or theirs.</p>
<p>My German is pretty lousy, but I practiced with my favorite roommate, Leif, while he practiced his English. We shared coffee; I shared my secret stash of chocolate cookies with him, and we watched The Hangover together.</p>
<h4>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h4>
<p>Two things: 1.) Do not use your university card at the mensa/cafeteria; save it for laundry. 2.) Your world is going to change dramatically. The people there are so friendly, and shopping–whether for food, clothes, or something else—feels very different than in the US.</p>
<p>The city has a clear identity and charm. Also, if you want a break from cooking, German food, or kebabs, Antica is a superb Italian restaurant. Also, look into the food market. You can try German, Persian, Turkish, and Indonesian cuisine, as well as pizza or seafood. I miss being able to just buy Turkish delight 15 minutes away from my school.</p>
<h4>Would you recommend European Union Summer - Politics &amp; Economics? Why?</h4>
<p>I would absolutely recommend this program. Not only is the city beautiful, but IES is also super well-organized. You get the schedule at orientation and can plan trips around it.</p>
<p>The classes are intense but never boring, and you learn so much. I feel as if I know more about the EU than some Europeans! I had no idea, going in, that there were 7 branches and what each one does.</p>
<p>You talk about immigration policy and laws, which are really interesting. The travel costs (except for food) are covered in full by IES, so you do not have to worry about plane or train tickets or where to stay. Everything is in the schedules they give you.</p>
<h4>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h4>

<p>You definitely know more about other cultures and learn humility and tolerance from this, but you also learn a lot about yourself.</p>
<p>Uprooting your life, even for a handful of weeks, and moving to an entirely different country with a different language and stores and materials is a big change. You have to go out, advocate for yourself, and survive on your own. You have to fight culture shock and feeling like a moron for not understanding basic phrases. There is so much mental toughness involved. You find an inner strength and more closely treasure the friends you make.</p>
<h4>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h4>
<p>I feel bored. Life feels more incomplete. I can't just drive for 2 hours and feel as if I am in an entirely different world. I miss Europe. A lot.</p>
<p>My friends who were also on the IES trip often write in our WhatsApp chat that they dreamt the night before we were all over there again together or that they went to the Black Forest.</p>
<p>There was a lot of chatter during September and October when the universities here were celebrating Oktoberfest and how the beer and wursts were not the same as in Germany, but they still brought nostalgia.</p>
<h4>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h4>
<p>Meaningful travel means going past the overly touristic spots and finding the soul of the city. Where are the locals spending their time? What is the best cool-down place after work? Which eateries and bars do they frequent, and do they know the servers personally? Where can you have a genuine conversation with someone as you stumble through the couple words you know of the country's language?</p>

<h4>What inspired you to go abroad?</h4>
<p>I had known from a young age that I wanted to study far from home, but due to the illness of one of my parents, I was afraid to make that jump. After a couple of years, CES Maastricht enabled me to live out my dream and explore Europe.</p>
<p>I have always enjoyed learning more about the world, and the ability to study in and travel around Europe was an eye-opening experience. I got to travel most of Western Europe, Albania in Central/Eastern Europe, and Morocco in Africa, so I was able to gain a lot of experience from a wide range of cultures!</p>

<p>I was drawn to Maastricht and the Netherlands because my family's ancestry is largely in Dutch/Belgian Limburg, and I wanted to immerse myself in the culture and truly explore it.</p>
<p>Additionally, I have always loved Europe, and I plan to return to the continent for grad school and my future life. This program allowed me the opportunity to explore the Netherlands and Europe and discover so much about myself and the world around me.</p>
<p>Key areas of the CES <a title="undefined" href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/ces-maastricht/programs/maastricht-university-history-culture-and-arts-in-europe-136221 rel="" target="_self" class="clickTracker" rev="domainID=6&amp;refererType=1&amp;refererID=3375&amp;abbreviation=CSCT&amp;clientID=45583" data-ga-client="CES Maastricht" data-contentlink=""><ins>program</ins></a> that connected with me were: Location (for ancestry), the built-in trips, the CES classes that included Dutch culture/Dutch language, and the ability to be near several other major European cities.</p>
<h4>What was your favorite part about Maastricht?</h4>
<p>Finding a sole favorite part feels impossible, but amongst my favorite things about Maastricht, the location and the community were two of my favorite things.</p>
<p>Maastricht is located right in the heart of Europe and gives you direct access to many countries within a short train ride. I was able to explore every neighboring country to the Netherlands from this location, and on top of that, the people of Maastricht truly make it such a perfect home base. As someone trying to learn the language as well, the locals were always willing to help me practice and get me out.</p>
<p>Aside from the locals, the city of Maastricht also has a large international community due to the university, so I was also able to meet so many interesting people from all over the world.</p>
<h4>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h4>

<p>What made my experience abroad so extraordinary was, without a doubt, the various experiences I had there and the connections I made. Every trip birthed new friendships, and I made so many memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.</p>
<p>I think the variety of places I visited and the diversity of people were something I really appreciated, since I was able to meet people from every continent and hear stories from so many different cultural backgrounds.</p>
<h4>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h4>
<p>The CES program offered coordinators who were only a text away at all times to help us navigate our time in Europe. The staff helped us through our application process, paperwork, getting to the Netherlands, and then through our classes and other trips sponsored by the CES Program.</p>
<p>I regularly contacted my CES coordinators with a variety of questions about travel, package delivery, local holidays/activities, etc. They always answered to the best of their ability, and I can't recall a single time when I had a problem go unsolved.</p>
<h4>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h4>
<p>One thing I wish I had done differently while abroad is to pack lighter. I feel that I over-packed and ended up with so many clothes that I never or hardly ever wore.</p>
<p>There are many stores nearby that have everything I could have needed, so things like soap, kitchen towels, toothbrushes, etc., were readily available and not necessary for me to pack.</p>
<p>I also would have ordered an NS weekend pass earlier to allow myself to explore more of the Netherlands, which, towards the end of my study abroad, became a tad too costly for me to do every weekend.</p>
<h4>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h4>
<p>A typical day in my life studying abroad consisted of 2 classes split across the day. I'd wake up at 8:00 a.m. for my morning class, then grab breakfast or lunch at a local cafe/restaurant. I filled the time between my classes with activities around the city (that's why I say breakfast or lunch), such as hiking, shopping, or hanging out with friends.</p>
<p>On the days I did not have class, I often took 2-3 day trips on weekends, and travelled to closer countries on weekdays when I was off. One of my favorite study spots to go to when I was off but still busy was Radium Boulders, a local bouldering gym that has a pizzeria and study space where I would go with friends. There was also a variety of museums we were given access to for free around the city that I would regularly visit, and I would challenge myself to find something new each time.</p>
<p>Belgium quickly became my favorite place to travel to, as I had a handful of friends from the Flanders region, so I also travelled through a variety of northern Belgian cities, such as Ghent, Bruges, Antwerp, and Brussels.</p>
<h4>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h4>

<p>As I mentioned briefly earlier, my friends and I often went to Radium Boulders to study and relax in our free time on those busier days. There were also numerous other events and places to visit around the city, and even by the time I was leaving, there was still so much to explore.</p>
<p>Some of my favorite activities around Maastricht are: the museums, the ENCI quarry, the Charles Eyckpark, Sint Pieter Fort, and a small town in Belgium called Kanne, which I often walked to for lunch.</p>
<h4>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h4>
<p>I stayed in the UM Guesthouse (as most, if not all, CES students do), specifically in the P building with a double, meaning I had a roommate and a private kitchen. Other students staying in the C building would not have a roommate and have a shared communal kitchen with a locker and key to protect their own belongings.</p>
<p>On top of the kitchen, I had cooking supplies like pots, pans, plates, and more. There was also a bed with sheets, a dining table, a desk, lamps, shelves, and storage. I never felt my accommodations left me needing anything, though I bought extra blankets for myself. Showers and bathrooms were communal but cleaned often, and were very nice.</p>
<p>The UM Guesthouse was a decent walk to the city, but the CES staff helped students rent bikes, and there is a bus stop right outside the guesthouse that can take you anywhere you need to go. The local market, Brusselsepoort, is also just a short walk away.</p>
<h4>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h4>
<p>I understand that the weather in the Netherlands is known for its rain. Going in with this mindset, I was very pleasantly surprised to find that my time in Maastricht was filled with sunny, warm days. I visited in the spring, but even when it rained, it was much less intense than what I am used to back home, and I only experienced one thunderstorm in over 150 days of living there.</p>
<p>Another thing to note is that you should do everything you can to explore the city. Nearing the end of the program, we had a few big get-togethers with students from CES, and I heard many people say, "I never knew this place existed."</p>
<p>I truly believe that while studying abroad is great for traveling, Maastricht is such a beautiful city with numerous activities and places to explore.</p>

<h4>Would you recommend CES Maastricht to others? Why?</h4>
<p>I would definitely recommend CES to others. I believe CES is the ideal program for anyone eager to learn more about Europe. As I mentioned, I went partly to reconnect with my family's culture and roots, but I also think there were others in the CES program who wanted a broader experience of "Europe," specifically Western Europe.</p>
<p>I believe this program suits both types of people: CES coordinators help you fully immerse yourself in Dutch and, even more, in regional Limburgish culture and traditions, while also assisting others in traveling to different cities across Europe and discovering 'hidden gems' in other countries.</p>
<p>One of my favorite hidden gems was Mechelen, Belgium, a beautiful city rich in history and full of delicious food. The program also includes built-in trips, which is really great for anyone traveling on a tighter budget. The travel, the community it fosters, and the resources offered are truly unmatched.</p>
<h4>What do you feel the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is?</h4>
<p>The biggest benefit for me is significantly broadening my own worldview.</p>
<p>I am the kind of person who finds small cultural differences fascinating and could talk for hours about them, even with someone who is not far away. I enjoy doing this in the US too, where I discuss different ways of saying things (e.g., "coke," "pop," or "soft drink") and find funny sayings or expressions used in different areas. For example, I had no idea "bud/buddy" was such a big part of my vocabulary until I spoke with someone from the West Coast.</p>
<p>I believe studying abroad greatly enhances this and lets you learn so much about different places, not just through travel, but also through the people of Maastricht, who come from all kinds of backgrounds. Of course, there's no better way to learn about cultures than to travel, and if you choose CES, travel will be guaranteed part of your experience.</p>

<h4>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h4>
<p>I try very hard to continue doing all the things I loved so much abroad, such as walking around my city more, searching for more events to participate in back home, and continuing to learn and practice the culture of my host country.</p>
<p>Fortunately, I live in an area that is very proud of its European heritage, and so we have a number of festivals that feel similar to remind me of my time abroad. I also do a lot to continue talking to my friends from abroad. We talk nearly every day and try to call each other on weekends. I enjoyed my time so much that I am returning to Maastricht this summer for an internship with the university.</p>
<h4>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h4>
<p>Meaningful travel, to me, is taking time to fully embrace the culture you are in and the history of the location. I don't think it requires extravagant locations or a long-term commitment, but doing everything you can to be fully present and learn as much as you can about the area is key to "meaningful travel."</p>
<p>What I mean by this is, don't expect to learn everything, try not to rush just to 'tick boxes' off a list, just go in and start learning, and let the world guide you. Whether you meet locals who have unique stories and facts about the area to share with you, or you meet other travelers who help you explore and learn more. I think that quality is much more important than quantity.</p>

<h4>What inspired you to go abroad?</h4>
<p>The decision to go abroad was one of the most transformative choices of my life. For years, I had dreamed of immersing myself in another culture, learning a new language, and seeing the world through a different lens.</p>
<p>What truly inspired me to take that step was my curiosity about how people live, communicate, and connect beyond my own cultural borders. <p>Spain attracted me for many reasons. Its language, history, and passion for life fascinated me. I wanted to experience that warmth firsthand—walking through old town streets, sharing conversations over tapas, and understanding the Spanish daily life rhythm</p>
<p>Living abroad wasn’t just about learning Spanish; it was about personal growth and developing independence and adaptability. In Spain, facing challenges taught me patience and open-mindedness, such as navigating new environments, adapting to schedules, and building cross-cultural relationships. Daily victories, like confidently ordering food in Spanish or finding my way in a new city, boosted my confidence.</p>

<p>One of the most meaningful parts of my experience was volunteering at a natural reserve with animals. Many were rescued from trafficking or poor conditions, and caring for them gave my stay purpose. Feeding them, cleaning habitats, and being present reminded me that kindness is universal. That experience connected my passion for travel with my desire to make a positive impact.</p>
<p>Going abroad to Spain didn’t just teach me about another culture—it taught me about myself. I learned that stepping outside your comfort zone is the best way to grow, and that the world is full of lessons if you’re willing to listen.</p>
<p>What inspired me most was the realization that every experience, no matter how challenging, is an opportunity to become a better version of yourself. Spain gave me that gift, and I will always be grateful for it.</p>

<h4>What was your favorite part about Bilbao?</h4>
<p>My favorite part about Bilbao was how perfectly it blends tradition with modernity.</p>
<p>Walking through the city, I could feel its transformation—from an industrial town to a vibrant cultural hub—while still keeping its Basque soul alive. The Guggenheim Museum was, of course, a highlight, not just for its architecture but for how it symbolizes Bilbao’s renewal and creativity.</p>
<p>But what truly made me fall in love with Bilbao was its atmosphere. The people are warm, proud, and deeply connected to their culture. I loved exploring the Casc Viejo, where every street seems to tell a story, and sharing pintxos with friends in lively local bars.</p>
<p>Surrounded by green mountains and so close to the sea, Bilbao felt like the perfect balance between nature and city life. Every corner inspired me—its art, its food, its rhythm. Bilbao didn’t just surprise me; it made me feel at home.</p>
<h4>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h4>

<p>While I fully engaged with classes and volunteering, saying yes to extra local events, trips, and cultural experiences would have allowed me to connect even more deeply with the people and culture of Bilbao.</p>
<h4>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h4>
<p>A typical day abroad began with Spanish classes at Instituto Hemingway, followed by volunteering with rescued animals—feeding, caring, and improving their habitats. Afternoons were for exploring Bilbao, practicing Spanish, or enjoying local cuisine. Evenings were spent with fellow students, reflecting on the day, and immersing myself in the city’s vibrant culture.</p>
<h4>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h4>
<p>During my free time abroad, I loved exploring Bilbao’s streets, enjoying local cuisine like pintxos, and visiting cultural sites such as the Guggenheim. I also enjoyed walks in nearby parks, meeting locals, and practicing Spanish in everyday situations, which made my experience both fun and immersive.</p>
<p>One thing I loved about my free time in Bilbao was that it served as a perfect base to explore not only the city but also other nearby towns and even countries. Traveling was fast, affordable, and convenient compared to my home country, allowing me to make the most of weekends and discover new cultures easily.</p>
<h4>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h4>
<p>I stayed in a shared apartment with my own private room, located in a safe, central, and vibrant area of Bilbao. The apartment had all the necessary comforts, making it a convenient and comfortable home base during my stay abroad. The neighborhood was cosmopolitan, with shops, cafes, and public transport nearby.</p>
<h4>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h4>
<p>One thing every future participant should know is that the program requires curiosity and openness.</p>

<p>My first trip abroad was to Mexico when I was in college, studying Spanish. That experience changed everything for me; it brought the language to life and showed me how much we can learn by stepping outside our comfort zones.</p>
<p>It ultimately led me to become a teacher, and now I’m passionate about giving my own students that same opportunity. I want them to see that learning a language isn’t just about words, it’s about people, culture, and connection.</p>

<p>I first connected with Bethel University Global Studies back in 2016, when Director Stacie Freeman was teaching dual-enrollment sociology at Greenfield High School. She was leading a trip to Cuba that semester, and I immediately saw how powerful that experience could be for my own students. Since then, we’ve traveled together every year.</p>

<p>The opportunity to earn college credit is another huge plus; it helps my students stand out on college and job applications.</p>
<h4>What was your favorite part about Mexico?</h4>
<p>My favorite part of the trip was exploring the Maya ruins with my students. Seeing their curiosity and excitement as history came to life right in front of them was incredible.</p>
<p>We ended the week with a trip to the beach to celebrate all we’d learned; one of our students had never seen the ocean before. Watching him step into the waves for the first time was a moment I’ll never forget. It reminded me exactly why we do this: to give students experiences that change how they see the world and themselves.</p>
<h4>What made your experience abroad extraordinary?</h4>
<p>What made this experience extraordinary was seeing our students discover the world for the first time. Many had never flown or been surrounded by another language, but they embraced every moment.</p>
<p>BU Global Studies carefully hired just the right local guide, Pablo, who made our time in Mexico truly special. Watching my students interact with him was heartwarming; they formed a genuine connection.</p>
<p>For me, that’s the essence of what I love about Global Studies: the relationships. Those human connections are what make travel so meaningful and unforgettable.</p>
<h4>How did local staff support you throughout your program?</h4>
<p>The local staff was incredible; every detail was handled perfectly, from airport pickup to meals, hotels, and tours. I didn’t have to worry about a thing.</p>
<p>What really stood out was how personal it all felt. This wasn’t a “big bus” tour; it was a private experience just for me and my students. We felt cared for, supported, and honestly, a little like royalty. Their professionalism and warmth made it easy for me to focus entirely on my students and their learning experience.</p>

<h4>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?</h4>
<p>If I could do one thing differently, I’d incorporate even more Spanish into the program.</p>
<p>As a Spanish teacher, I know how easy it is to slip back into speaking English, especially when everyone working in tourism is bilingual or multilingual. Our students learned a lot and gained incredible confidence speaking Spanish throughout the week, but I know we could push it even further.</p>
<p>Next time, I plan to create more intentional moments for full immersion. There’s no better classroom than real-world conversation, and every exchange helps them grow as both travelers and language learners.</p>
<h4>Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.</h4>
<p>A typical day on the Mexico program starts with breakfast together before heading out for a full day of exploration and learning. We might visit a Maya archaeological site, swim in a cenote, or spend time with a local family learning traditional cooking. Lunch is often a cultural experience in itself, fresh, local food shared around the table. Afternoons are for reflection, language practice, or exploring local markets. Evenings bring group dinners, laughter, and conversation about what we’ve learned that day.</p>
<p>Every day is thoughtfully planned by BU Global Studies and our local partners to balance education, culture, and connection; it’s the perfect blend of structure and adventure.</p>
<h4>What did you enjoy doing during your free time abroad?</h4>
<p>During free time, I loved exploring alongside the students, shopping for souvenirs, listening to live music, and soaking up the atmosphere. We also made it a mission to find the best local coffee spots (which didn’t take long in Mexico!).</p>
<p>Those relaxed moments together were some of my favorites. They gave us time to connect, laugh, and just enjoy being part of the local culture.</p>
<h4>What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?</h4>
<p>We stayed in nice, clean, centrally located hotels in both Mérida and Valladolid. The locations couldn’t have been better; they gave us a comfortable home base and easy access to everything we wanted to see.</p>
<p>I especially liked that we could break into small groups and explore safely on foot without needing taxis or shuttles. It made the experience feel more immersive and convenient, and students loved the independence it gave them to wander, shop, and practice their Spanish in real settings.</p>
<h4>What is one thing every future participant should know about your program before their program begins?</h4>
<p>One thing every future participant should know is that they’ll have the time of their lives.</p>
<p>BU Global Studies makes everything easy—its programs are safe, affordable, and truly educational. Each itinerary is designed so travelers genuinely get to know the people and places they visit, not just see them from a bus window.</p>

<p>For many of my rural students, it’s the moment they realize the world is within their reach — and that changes everything for them!</p>
<h4>Now that you're home, how has your time abroad impacted your life?</h4>
<p>Well, I’m already working with BU Global Studies to plan my next adventure, if that tells you anything!</p>
<p>Each trip reminds me why I teach and how powerful travel can be for students. Seeing them grow in confidence, curiosity, and compassion inspires me to keep creating more opportunities for them to experience the world.</p>
<h4>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h4>
<p>When students travel meaningfully, they return home changed in how they see others and in how they see themselves. That’s what makes travel truly powerful.</p>
<p>They come back with greater confidence, not just in their Spanish-speaking skills, but in who they are. They’ve learned to adapt, to problem-solve, and to navigate unfamiliar situations with patience and courage.</p>
<p>In short, they return home better equipped for life, with a broader worldview and a deeper appreciation for people and places beyond their own.</p>
