A Guide to Architecture Internships Abroad
Prepare for an Internship
Understand the benefits
Interning abroad in architecture offers numerous advantages that extend beyond classroom learning. To list a few, here are what you can look forward to:
- Exposure to different architectural styles. What’s exciting about interning abroad is learning about different architectural styles and current trends that you could later take inspiration from for your work.
- Building an international portfolio. As you travel, you build your portfolio with international projects that show how adaptable you are to different preferences.
- Learning advanced design technologies. Architectural firms worldwide use various design software and techniques that you can learn to enhance your technical skills.
Things to know
Before embarking on your architecture internship abroad, there are a few more important factors to consider:
- Cost of living and accommodations - Research living costs to budget for housing, food, and transport, which vary by location. Affordable options like shared apartments, student housing, or homestays can help manage expenses, giving you a realistic monthly budget for essentials.
- Visas and important documents - Check visa requirements early and gather necessary documents, like a passport and proof of funds. Applying in advance and having document copies ensures smoother travel and helps avoid delays or complications.
- Health and safety - Learn how to access healthcare and get international health insurance for emergencies. Familiarize yourself with local safety guidelines and emergency contacts to feel prepared in your new environment.
Choose a Location
Choosing the right country for your architecture internship can greatly enhance your learning experience and professional development. Here are some top destinations to consider:
Spain
Interns in Spain can experience a blend of historic and modern architecture, including works by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona and Santiago Calatrava in Valencia. The country offers opportunities to learn about innovative urban planning, sustainable design, and restoration of historical buildings. Spain's rich architectural heritage and vibrant cultural life make it an ideal place to intern.
Japan
Japanese architecture has had a significant impact on the industry, particularly through its emphasis on disaster-resistant and eco-friendly structures. Interning in Japan will give you firsthand experience with these innovations, as well as the opportunity to explore the country’s unique design technologies and minimalist aesthetics. Overall, an internship in Japan will provide insight into balancing survival, tradition, and aesthetics.
Australia
Australia is known for its sustainable architecture and innovative design. Interns can learn about green building practices and urban planning while exploring landmarks like the Sydney Opera House. Australia’s active construction industry, and focus on environmental sustainability, offer a rich learning environment for architecture students.

If you have a specific type of project in mind, timing your internship can play a crucial role in its success. Consider the following pointers to help you decide how when to go:
- Summer. Interning in the summer is ideal for large-scale construction projects, benefiting from longer daylight hours and favorable weather.
- Fall. In the fall, opportunities in sustainable design and urban planning become available as the weather cools, offering a fresh perspective on energy-efficient architecture.
- Winter. Opting for a winter internship is great for focusing on indoor design and planning projects. Exploring destinations in the Southern Hemisphere can provide more outdoor opportunities during this season.
- Spring. Internships in spring are perfect for landscape architecture and renovation projects, as the season brings new growth and revitalization to cities and environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I apply for architecture internships abroad?
Before anything else, you must determine which sector interests you or aligns with your university requirements. Your search for an architecture internship abroad may encompass the International Relations Office of your university, specific companies or firms, or online platforms that list opportunities from program providers worldwide.
What country is best for architecture internships?
It all depends on the sector you want to specialize in. The UAE, Dubai in particular, is the perfect destination for an architecture internship if you’re interested in avante-garde or insanely tall buildings. Australia is an ideal country for sustainable design, while Spain is for diverse architectural styles—from Gothic to modern.
What are the best-paying architecture internships?
Architecture internships, like any other programs for university students and fresh graduates, are generally unpaid. But based on the current job market, a few highly paid careers include Principal Architect, Architect, Architectural Engineer, Architectural Project Manager, and Architectural Designer.
How much do architecture internships abroad cost?
The average cost of architecture internships abroad can be anywhere from $2000-$2,500 for a duration of four weeks. This amount goes toward the program fee, which generally includes accommodation and a meal plan. You also have to factor in logistics and daily living expenses to estimate the entire cost while interning overseas.

An eye-opening, engaging and rewarding experience!
September 02, 2026by: Samuel Davidson - United KingdomProgram: Virtual/Remote Global Internships Through The Intern Group
As an economics student, I am deeply interested in understanding how rigorous modelling coupled with data-driven analysis can be used to effectuate economic and social change through guiding real-world decision-making. Over the last few years, I have increasingly recognised that unlocking the potential value that this discipline could bring hinges on whether one can discern which models and tools would be appropriate for the given context. To develop my capacity for making substantive judgements, I sought out The Intern Group to match me with a suitable organisation that would enable me to apply the skills and knowledge I've learnt from my time at university. The experience itself was highly challenging and intellectually stimulating; it forced me to think critically about what would constitute a useful deliverable for my partner organisation, in addition to how it should be presented to communicate my findings accessibly. In contrast to university coursework, which is generally evaluated in accordance with a well-defined set of criteria, I was granted the liberty to be creative in how I approached this project. Consequently, I had the chance to engage in divergent thinking and figure out for myself which ideas were feasible and worth developing. Although this strategy requires spending considerable time and energy before making any visible progress, it allowed me to identify the constraints imposed by the available data, understand the incentives faced by different stakeholders and consider what information decision-makers need to act effectively. Learning how to draw upon this framework in order to credibly and reliably inform decision-making within the global agricultural commodity trading market has inspired me to pursue further study and gain new experiences so that I may broaden my exposure while deepening and consolidating my skills and knowledge. I believe that this experience, supplemented by the developmental opportunities and resources offered by The Intern Group, has helped me to clarify my career path, reaffirm my understanding of how the discipline can yield practical insights and realise my own potential in contributing to real-world change.
My Business Development Internship in Lisbon, Portugal with Absolute Internship
September 02, 2026by: Kayla Jaco - United StatesMy business development internship in Lisbon, Portugal, with Absolute Internship was an incredible experience that let me apply everything I'd learned in university to real business settings, from client outreach to strategy discussions. Beyond the professional growth, I fell in love with exploring Lisbon and traveling to other parts of Portugal, all alongside the amazing friends I made through the program. Absolute Internship did a great job balancing meaningful work experience with the chance to genuinely live and explore a new country. I came back with more confidence, real work experience, and friendships I'll carry with me long after the program ended. I'd highly recommend this program to anyone considering an internship abroad.
Amber
September 02, 2026by: Ambrine * - FranceProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I am Amber, french student in international trade and I had a two-months internship at Korea GapYear. Thank you very much to Korea GapYear and to all the staff for allowing me to do my internship in Seoul as I really wanted to. They have been very nice and warm to me since the very first day and helped me integrate into korean life. They have been really understanding and allowed me to gain experience, knowledge and try new things during my internship. Thank you particularly to Olivia who was my tutor during this internship and who helped me not only with my work but with the preparation of my stay in Seoul and my integration into korean culture. They've been really open-minded as I came while I was fasting and that made me feel even more comfortable working with them. What was your funniest moment? Filming a video for applicants going to France (because I am myself) and having to scream to test the mic before each take.
3 month internship in Seoul
September 02, 2026by: Mary * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I had such a great time with my environmental internship in Seoul! Korea GapYear really makes sure to match up your internship with not only an internship relating to your job perspectives, but also takes into account the personality and culture of the workplace. At first I was nervous because I have heard a lot about how strict the rules are in Korean offices, but luckily my company was so open and welcoming, and not only the workers, but the CEO speak comfortably and in a friendly manner, so I was excited to show up to the office everyday. Overall, if you are looking for an internship provider, KGY does a great job at finding a fitting one for you!

I enjoyed my stay so much and with the help of KGY it is really one of the best journey of my life. If I will be given a chance to make another experience I would definitely go ask help from KGY. Pros Becoming a quick learner, maturity & independent Experiencing the things I’ve never tried Being brave and open minded Cons No cons super great experience!

My Absolute Internship Experience in Stockholm
September 01, 2026by: Matilde Fanti - ItalySpending two months in Stockholm with Absolute Internship turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made for my career. What stood out immediately was how carefully the placement team listened to what I actually wanted — not just any internship, but one that genuinely matched my skills and goals. And they delivered: the company I ended up working with was the perfect fit, giving me real responsibilities and hands-on experience from day one. I owe a huge thank you to my coordinators, Moa, Anna, and Kofi. Whatever I needed, whenever I needed it, they were there quick to respond, genuinely invested in making sure things went smoothly, and always willing to go the extra mile. That kind of support made settling into a new city and a new job so much less stressful than I expected. Beyond the work itself, Stockholm as a city gave me so much: a new culture, a new way of life, and a chance to build friendships with interns from completely different backgrounds through the events and activities the program put together. Looking back, this internship didn't just add a line to my resume — it gave me real skills, real confidence, and a real taste of what working internationally feels like. If you're considering doing something similar, I highly recommend Absolute Internship and an international experience like mine.
Knowing Swedish Culture
September 01, 2026by: Michele Lombardi - ItalyMy two-month experience with Absolute Internship in Stockholm was truly transformative. From the very beginning, the placement team took the time to understand my background and career goals, matching me with a company where I could gain meaningful, hands-on professional experience rather than just routine tasks. Living and working in Stockholm was an incredible opportunity. The on-site support was excellent, ensuring a smooth transition into both the workplace and daily life in Sweden. Beyond the internship itself, the program organized great networking events and cultural activities that allowed me to connect with fellow interns from all over the world. This experience significantly boosted my resume, helped me develop key industry skills, and gave me firsthand insight into an international work culture. I highly recommend Absolute Internship to any student or young professional looking to accelerate their career abroad.
Entertainment Internship
September 01, 2026by: Lauren * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
Definitely recommend this program to other people! kgy is so kind and full of commiment kgy offers like a lot of choices to choose from like for me when I applied like there was like an education teaching aspect, a business aspect, a non-profit organization aspect, so literally anyone wants to come to Korea for an internship definitely recommend to go through kgy You guys are the best! Usually in the U.S people are very independent they like to do things on their own, but here in Korea like everyone especially at work, everyone works together as a team like they're so cooperative. At my company other people help me like working as a team I really like that a lot and everyone has an equal role like knowing how to work in a team! This internship has been like a hundred percent good match for me I don't think I would have been able to find something like this without kgy’s help! Thank you

My experience as IT intern at KGY
September 01, 2026by: Alex * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
My internship is going great! I am currently doing an IT internship in Seoul. Time does fly fast. I can’t believe my internship is already coming to an end but I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot of new things and I feel like my Korean language skills as well as my understanding of Korean culture have both significantly improved. Outside of my internship, I have really been enjoying my stay here in Korea. It has been a blast so far. Thank you so much Korea gap year for everything. I appreciate the time that I have spent in Korea.

What an experience!
September 01, 2026by: Lenin Pusparaj - BelgiumProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
Finding an Internship in Korea can be easier with KoreaGapYear, especially as a student having a lot on my plate already. KoreaGapYear was recommended to me by one of my university's classmate students. And that's how my journey with KoreaGapYear began. I worked as a Digital Marketing Intern at KoreaGapYear, where I witnessed the team's ardent efforts to support individuals in achieving their aspirations and goals by offering Internships, Gap Years, Exchange Programs, and Language Programmes. KoreaGapYear is a great idea!
Best Choice for Korea
September 01, 2026by: Ryan * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
My stay in Korea was amazing because of Korea Gap Year. From the first email, the entire staff at Korea Gap Year truly cares about providing you with the best experience possible. I had the privilege of having Bella coordinate my internship/Korean journey and she was fantastic in every way. The internship application process is more thorough than in similar programs meaning, your specific interests and needs are taken into consideration throughout the entire application process (I worked with other programs which were far more vague). In addition, after you are placed in an internship you get to select your housing from several options provided by Korea Gap Year. My housing location was great since it was very close to the subway and plenty of stores/restaurants. While in Korea Bella and Olivia would consistently check in on me and answer any questions I had regarding Korean living. Of course, my internship (in marketing) was perfect and exactly what I was looking for. My host company's staff were all very friendly even taking me out on several social activities. I cannot recommend Korea Gap Year enough and would suggest anyone still deciding to at least interview with them and I promise you will not be disappointed!
I truly enjoyed my internship and am very thankful for the opportunity.
September 01, 2026by: Phoebe Voumard - United StatesProgram: Internships in Madrid, Spain
I had a wonderful time during my internship and greatly enjoyed the experience. I made significant improvements in my Spanish speaking abilities, and I am very grateful for the opportunity. I truly enjoyed my internship and am very thankful for the opportunity.
Life-Changing experience
September 01, 2026by: Isaias Rodriguez - United StatesPersonally, it helped me in being a more independent individual. It also helped me be more adaptive to a new environment. Professionally it helped me as a stronger asset in the work-force and working in a new country gave me tons of interpersonal skills.

Going to Seoul with Beyond was a great experience
September 01, 2026by: Daniel Perkins - EnglandI was in Seoul for about 8 weeks on an internship and it was an incredible experience that I definitely won’t be forgetting. My personal experience with my placement was great, the work I had to do was in a field I was interested in, my coworkers in the company were very nice and supportive and the overall work environment was great. There were multiple social events planned by Beyond every week and so these events as well as the free time I had on the weekends made it very easy to make the most of my time in South Korea. Overall this experience was fantastic and I would definitely recommend it.
Communication Internship
September 01, 2026by: Irene Papadopoulos - GreeceAs an economics graduate from Athens, I wanted to gain international experience before starting my career. GAC placed me with a business consultancy in Beijing, where I contributed to live market research projects for European clients looking to expand into Asia. My mentor guided me through every step — from data gathering to presenting findings to senior stakeholders. The GAC team made the entire process smooth: visa support, airport pickup, and a comfortable apartment in a central location. Weekly Mandarin lessons helped me navigate daily life with ease. After three months, I returned to Greece more confident, globally aware, and with a strong addition to my CV. I highly recommend this program to any young professional ready to grow.

Shanghai Intern with Absolute Internship
August 31, 2026by: Emma Weast - United StatesAbsolute Internship gave me an incredible opportunity this summer. For the first time, I was able to visit China and complete an eight week internship abroad in Shanghai. It was an incredible time where I was able to put past skills to use, all while gaining new ones. Additionally, Absolute had structured a great program with a strong balance of planned activities and free weekends to explore the city on one's own. Absolute hosted several day trips and two weekend trips, all with chaperones and busses that drove us to our locations. They planned activities for us, got our train tickets, and essentially made sure all we had to do was show up. It was amazing not to have to worry about details all while getting to see new places. One thing I absolutely loved was the housing Absolute chose to put my program in - we were in an apartment with our own rooms. Being able to come home to an empty room after a long day at work was incredible. I don't know if I would have been able to finish the program as happy as I did if I had to share a room the entire time, knowing I would've been incredibly burnt-out the entire time. It definitely wasn't the 'best' part of the internship, but it made it much better.

Best time ever!
August 28, 2026by: Alastair A - United KingdomProgram: International Internships in Bangkok
I interned in Bangkok at a law firm, I had a great relationship with my colleagues and they were very friendly and welcoming. Software Engineer in Bangkok
August 28, 2026by: Abbas Khan - United KingdomProgram: International Internships in Bangkok
I had a 6 week, software engineering internship in Bangkok. The experience was great and well directed by the intern group, the accommodation was fantastic and the weekly excursions were very fun, the excursions allowed me to dive into the culture and explore Bangkok. My host organisation was an international real estate company, I worked in the business technology department and had a great experience, my colleagues and boss were very welcoming and communication wasn't an issue. Overall the experience was great and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to get experience. It has greatly improved my success when applying for jobs after graduation too.
Management Graduate loved China
August 27, 2026by: Magda Kowalska - PolandAs a management graduate from Poland, I wanted to see how business works in Asia. GAC placed me with a consulting firm in Beijing, where I worked on real market entry strategies for international clients. I was involved in client meetings, data analysis, and presentation preparation. My mentor was incredibly supportive and explained the nuances of Chinese business culture. The team handled my visa, accommodation, and even organized weekend trips to the Great Wall. I returned home with confidence, new skills, and a job offer. Highly recommend!
