A Guide to National Park Internships Abroad
Why Intern Abroad in National Parks
Aside from the shiny badge that many national park rangers proudly wear, there are many reasons to consider an internship (and eventual career?) in a national park. There will be plenty of opportunities to spend time outdoors, study the stars in some of the world’s most remote locations, and have access to private time with Mother Nature. You’ll also help protect the planet, and show visitors how important it is that they do so too.
Perhaps you already know the exact national park you’ll use as basecamp, or are open to exploring the world and seeing which corner of it you fall the most in love with. Either way, national park internships abroad will expose you to new cultures, environments, species, and people, all things you’ll likely deal with on a daily basis in the national park system of any country.
A national park internship will teach you the ropes of how national parks are run, invaluable knowledge and business insights for your future career. There’s more to being a national park employee than wearing a great uniform or hiking in the wilderness; an internship at a national park can help make sense of the bureaucracy of how most national park systems are run (since they’re usually part of the government) and the intricacies of building a fulfilling lifelong career that both challenges you and protects the environment for generations to come. It’s not all about smelling roses; but some days it will be, and that’s why national park internships are so desirable.
Locations
One important consideration for you city-dwellers out there is that national park internship placements won’t likely be in the center of a bustling metropolis. If you’re looking for state-of-the-art modern conveniences, you might want to direct your internship search toward a “national mall” rather than a “national park.” However, if you don’t mind roughin’ it or sacrificing your daily showers to help the planet, national park internships could be perfect for you. We should probably mention your precious cell phone will likely be out of service (a #happyplace for some, modern torture for others).
The United States is not the only country to have an exemplary national park system that seeks to protect some of the most beautiful natural wonders and habitats on Earth, but it is one of the best known, and draws some of the largest crowds. Within the U.S. National Park Service, interns have the opportunity to work and learn from nearly every role in a park, and the diversity of parks (compare examples such as historic Harper’s Ferry National Park with remote outdoors Denali National Park) provide a huge range of options to choose from.
One great region to look for national park internships abroad that can teach you skills for a national park career is Central and South America. Costa Rica is a natural choice, with its incredible biodiversity and high prioritization of conservation within the country. Similarly, Ecuador offers wonderful opportunities to experience the wilderness and wildlife in their country, as does Chile, which also has several environmental preservation internships based in national parks.
You could also spend time among the “Big Five” in a game preserve in South Africa, intern in a wildlife rescue center in Uganda, or work with locals in Tanzania teaching them hospitality and stewardship for their own natural resources. The diversity of internships options isn’t quite as big as the number of species and ecosystems in Africa, but it’s close!
While you may wish to end up interning in a national park specifically, don’t forget to consider game preserves, conservation zones, and companies that may not have geographic boundaries, but provide similar opportunities.
National Park Internships
Most national park internships that will prepare you for a real career in the national park system will put you in close quarters with Mother Nature and her many inhabitants. National park internships allow you to explore a variety of different roles in the field. Explore ground work in conservation, partner with professional geoscientists to study how the park is changing over time, or learn the ropes of the business side of how national parks are run through a national parks consulting internship. Many people contribute to the success of a national park, and nearly all roles offer internship opportunities.
National park internships often occur as part of secondary or collegiate education, though many students may wish to pursue a graduate career in a more specific field, such as environmental management or conservation, which often includes an internship as well. Due to the intense hands-on nature of national park internships, choosing to participate in one or more internships during your academic career can only help to give you insight into exactly what type of work you’d like to do upon graduation.
Most national park internships don’t require specific academic qualifications, though it won’t hurt to have studied subjects like biology, ecology, or geology. That being said, students from art, history, anthropology, and archaeology backgrounds are just as likely to be interested in and succeed at national park internships.
Upon internship completion, the world is your oyster! Whether you completed a national park internship abroad or close to home, you will suddenly have prospects not only in the national parks, but in game preserves, state and local park systems, in the private and public sector, and much more. The knowledge gained about protecting the environment in your internship is in high demand as the resources of our planet become increasingly constrained.
Benefits & Challenges
Close connection with nature. Many people dream of the chance to spend their careers outdoors, surrounded by wildlife and nature. With a career in a national park system anywhere in the world, this can be your life everyday.
Competition for placements. The reality of national parks is that they are often faced with funding difficulties and there are only so many jobs available. An internship in a national park will help you stand out in the crowd of applicants.
Immersion on every level. If you choose to do an internship abroad to advance your national parks career, you’ll not only get the chance to be immersed in the environment, you’ll also get a chance to experience other cultures, languages, and customs. Your eyes will be opened to the wonders of the world, and you’ll realize there are far more than seven of them.
Do it for the birds, for the bees, for the bear necessities. Walk out on your cabin porch and take a look around you; between your morning dip in the nearby lake, to firing up your walkie-talkie, to learning your new trail maintenance assignments, participating in a national park internship abroad is a noble and educational endeavor.

I had the best time of my life doing an internship in here
August 22, 2026by: Raimond Kevin - NetherlandsProgram: International Internships in Bangkok
Personally, though, my experience with the TIG has been so much positive. Their team was always responsive and supportive throughout the whole process. They helped me a lot to prepare for mock interviews pre-interview with the host company, organised CV workshops and seminars and even ran cultural sessions that brought me closer to a better idea of what living and interning abroad would actually be like before i arrived. They also helped me with accommodation, my visa process and answered pretty much every question i had along the way. What I actually do appreciate the most is how supportive the Bangkok Intern Group has been. Whenever I need help whether it was with exchanging money, accommodation, or if any issues came up with work, they are always there to help and respond quickly. I would definitely say this experience has been worth all.
My summer in Bangkok
August 22, 2026by: Charlotte Bevin - United StatesI absolutely loved my summer in Bangkok with Beyond Academy. It was really interesting to learn about Thai culture from just walking to the BTS station and talking to locals. It is very humid in Bangkok and be prepared to sweat a lot but it is worth it! The food in Thailand is delicious, my personal favorite was the Thai Basil Rice (you can clarify your spice levels). I also highly suggest to travel to other places in Thailand/South East Asia while you are there. I went to Phuket, Ko Samet (beaches) and Chang Mai (more mountains/rural).
Must Recomment K-Pop Entertainment Internship in Korea
August 21, 2026by: Shruti * - IndiaProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I'm not confident in Korean I just know how to say Annyeonghaseyo. Saranghae. I love you. I love BTS that's all I need to say. And I have been in South Korea for the past one month and a half. I have about 15 days left. So, I'm doing an internship in marketing and PR. It's in a K-pop entertainment company. It has been good. At the start, it was a bit new. I'm not used to sitting at the desk for such a long period. And this is my first internship, so now I'm used to it. It's a bit easier. All the people over there are really helpful and kind. I'm doing business administration and international business. My school wanted us to do a compulsory internship in our first year. At first, it was just additional work. I didn't want to do an internship right after my exams, since it's my vacation. So, I had to go somewhere that I would actually enjov. So, I was like, I'll just go to South Korea. It's the perfect thing for me. I love BTS. That's why I chose South Korea. It's basically because of BTS. And I don’t regret for a second and I have been really enjoying myself so much. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!

Design UX Internship with KGY
August 21, 2026by: Maria Rosa - NetherlandsProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I've learned a lot, actually, because it also has to do with my major, but these are things that I don't particularly do in my classes because we are more designers for websites; I already knew how to do the technical stuff, but it was helpful in handling it the more professional way, because I used to do it only in school, and in school you don't really care about your work that much; here, it's for the company itself, so it has to be done in a professional way, and in that way, it was helpful! Thank you for everything KGY.

Barcelona Intern
August 21, 2026by: Kiera Ramirez - United StatesThe entire internship abroad experience was great! The Beyond Academy coordinators did a great job organizing activities that allowed us to experience the must-see parts of Barcelona, while also providing great recommendations for places to eat, explore, and navigate the city. I also really appreciated the wide variety of internship fields available. Overall, it was a great way to gain international work experience while experiencing life in Barcelona!
Thank you so much for the lovely review, Kiera! We’re so glad to hear that you had such a positive experience in Barcelona and were able to combine gaining international work experience with making the most of everything the city has to offer. It’s especially great to hear how much you enjoyed the activities organized by our Barcelona Community Team, as well as all of their local recommendations along the way. We always want our interns to feel like they’re really experiencing life in their program city, rather than simply living and working there for a few weeks. We loved having you as part of our Barcelona community and hope you’re leaving with some amazing memories, new skills and experiences that you can take forward into your future career. Wishing you all the best with whatever comes next!
Fashion Internship Experience in Korea as a Colombian
August 20, 2026by: Carolina * - ColombiaProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I joined an internship at a startup focused on sustainable fashion, creating bags and accessories with a mission to care for the planet. For every item sold, one is donated to a child in Africa. My role involved developing marketing, business, and expansion strategies, applying everything I learned in my Master’s and undergraduate studies. This experience taught me the importance of adapting to different corporate cultures and allowed me to contribute meaningfully to a company with a beautiful mission.

Marketing Internship in Seoul, South Korea
August 20, 2026by: Lovely * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
After graduating with a degree I wasn’t sure how to use, I found myself feeling lost. I knew I needed time to refocus and understand what I truly enjoy doing. That’s why I decided to take a gap year, to focus on myself and explore new opportunities. When I was first consulted by Korea Gap Year, I immediately felt understood. They guided me through every step of the process and made sure all of my questions were answered. Their support helped me feel at ease before and during my stay in South Korea. I came to Seoul for a one-month internship at Korea Gap Year, where I worked in marketing—my first time ever in this kind of role. I was both nervous and excited, and I truly wanted to do my best. Three years earlier, I had studied abroad in Seoul for six months, so I already had an idea of what to expect. I knew a month would be the perfect length for me this time both emotionally and financially. If I could have stayed longer, I absolutely would have, because I really enjoyed my time working at Korea Gap Year. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Korean work environment. When I arrived, Olivia kindly introduced me to everyone and gave me a tour of the office. I was asked to present myself and share my skills so they could assign tasks accordingly. One of the things I enjoyed most was translating past participants’ stories into English and Spanish. It turned out to be something I loved, and it made me realize that I want to pursue a career in this field. My schedule was Monday through Thursday, 9 AM to 6 PM. It was definitely an adjustment especially sitting for eight hours straight but I got used to it. One thing that surprised me was how quiet the office could be. In the U.S., people often greet each other with “good morning” or “have a good day,” whereas in Korea, people just quietly go about their work. At first, I felt a bit rude not saying anything, but eventually, the introvert in me appreciated the quiet too. My main goal during this internship was to become more confident and focused on my career. While I sometimes felt frustrated knowing I had to go back home, this experience gave me time to reflect. The job market in the U.S. has been tough, and I often felt uncertain about what was waiting for me. But living alone in Korea for a month was an eye-opener. It helped me learn so much about myself. I've always struggled to express how I feel, but being here helped me open up. Being a student in Korea three years ago was a completely different experience from working here. It’s much easier to make friends as a student. As a worker, it was more difficult, but I appreciated the little moments when locals would approach me during dinner just to speak English. Some even asked about my Mexican heritage and my Spanish, which made me happy and proud to share. It was a meaningful exchange of cultures. Korean culture was breathtaking to experience again. From packed subways during rush hour to cute themed cafes and late-night karaoke, everything felt surreal. I know I’ll truly miss this lifestyle when I return home. It's definitely true when they say Seoul never sleeps! Don’t be afraid to try new things! Try new foods, drinks, visit places, and step out of your comfort zone. You’re in a different country, don't be shy. If you feel discouraged or homesick just remember that you are working towards your goal and future. I also believe your accomodation should be around a loud neighborhood so it’s not totally quiet making you feel at ease being abroad alone. Thank you, Korea Gap Year, for welcoming me as an intern. I’m incredibly grateful for all that I learned and for the support you gave me. To future participants: - Don’t overpack, unless you don’t plan on spending money in Korea. Honestly, it's hard not to! Everything is more affordable compared to the U.S. or Europe, so bring two suitcases. - Research before you go! Watch videos about getting around Incheon Airport, SIM cards, and public transportation. It’s super helpful. - Be prepared for loneliness if you’re traveling for the first time. At home, eating alone is comforting, but in a new country, it can feel isolating. Thankfully, some coworkers invited me to eat together, which I truly appreciated. - Try new things! Whether it’s food, places, or stepping out of your comfort zone. You’re in a different country! Don’t be shy. If you ever feel homesick, remind yourself why you’re here and what you’re working toward. - Stay somewhere lively. If possible, choose accommodation in a busier area. The noise and energy can help ease feelings of loneliness. What to Bring: - Seoul has tons of stores. Daiso is a lifesaver for essentials and affordable finds. - Two things I had trouble with: finding foundation that matches my skin tone, and pants that fit (if you’re tall, they may run short). So pack those ahead of time! - Don’t forget an adapter for your electronic, but don’t worry if you forget something everything’s accessible here. My Gap Year Review! Environment ★★★★★ I was not used to such a quiet working environment but it was really nice getting to experience a different working culture. Language ★★★★★ It was nice being around the Korean language as it made me learn new vocabulary but if you don’t speak it that’s okay there so many things that are translated to English. Accommodation ★★★★★ I got an Airbnb near the company which was so convenient especially during working hours it gets super busy in the subway. So, if you can get an accommodation near the company I suggest that. Safety ★★★★★ Seoul is very safe in my opinion so I never had to worry about any dangerous parts or activities but it’s still an important thing to be safe wherever you are. Learning ★★★★★ Thank you Korea Gap Year for giving me this opportunity! I learned a lot of new skills and realized what tasks I really enjoy doing. I also learned more Korean than I thought!

A priceless & unforgettable learning experience!

What an amazing internship experience! It was an unforgettable month that pushed me out of my comfort zone, gave me experiences I’d never have at home, and allowed me to learn about conservation while meeting some amazing people. I learned a great deal and the entire experience definitely exceeded my expectations! I really enjoyed game drives. It was a good way to explore the reserve, learn lots about the environment and wildlife, get to know other participants and no drive was ever the same. Seeing all the animals, sunrise and sunsets on drives and getting to know new people made the experience truly unforgettable.

Best summer ever
August 19, 2026by: Bryce Brenkus - United StatesThe internship experience in Barcelona was absolutely amazing both in the office and out of the office. Our local host Isabel was amazing when getting us acclimated to the city, as well as providing reccomendations and ensuring our safety. On top of that, her community events that she planned for our group were so much fun whether it was a day trip to the beach, going to dinner, or attractions like park guell. The internship on the other hand was a great work experience, and I learned so much about working abroad.
Thank you so much for the amazing review, Bryce! We’re so glad to hear that you had such a positive experience both inside and outside of your internship during your time in Barcelona. It’s especially lovely to hear how much you appreciated Isabel and all of the support, recommendations and activities she provided throughout your program. From beach days and dinners to exploring some of Barcelona’s must-see spots, it sounds like you really made the most of your time in the city! We’re also so happy to hear that your internship gave you valuable professional experience and the opportunity to learn more about working abroad. We loved having you as part of our Barcelona community and hope you’re leaving with plenty of new skills, friendships and amazing memories from your summer!

Change your life, network, and perspective
August 15, 2026by: Victoria Gacutan - United StatesProgram: International Internships in Dublin
I will always be an advocate to intern or study abroad. No matter where you choose to go, you will leave with your life changed. The Intern Group is a reputable, reliable choice. Dublin is a great city to explore and work in, especially if you like more mid-size and communal cities. What you put into the program is what you get out, so explore and experience all you can. There’s a lot to do in Dublin, as you have both of best worlds, being by the city and sea. As an avid ocean lover, I was able to be in the ocean, but also get my city girl on which I loved. Adam and Laura were our ECs here in Dublin. They were great in coordinating social plans while getting accustomed to Dublin and if we had any questions, they were very supportive.
A Program That Truly Delivers!
August 15, 2026by: Megan Hoang - United StatesProgram: International Internships in Dublin
This internship abroad is the kind of experience that changes how you see yourself. Away from the usual routines and support systems back home, you’re forced to figure things out on your own, and that’s where the real growth happens. Navigating a new place, solving problems solo, building a routine from scratch: it teaches you more about independence than any classroom ever could. The program also gives you room to actually test out a career path instead of just guessing at it. You get to try the work firsthand and see what genuinely clicks. What stands out most is the community and the events. Everyone’s going through the same adjustment, which creates a natural closeness. People get it, and they show up for each other, which makes the hard parts a lot easier to handle. Overall, a genuinely worthwhile experience. Highly recommend.
Thinking outside the box
August 15, 2026by: Giorgia Salgarelli - ItalyProgram: International Internships in Dublin
This experience gave me so much. During my internship, I learned to see things from different perspectives and to try new things without fear also because the people I worked with were very kind, helpful and supportive. I'm very grateful for everything and experiences like this are very important because if you think that you have an open mind like this one helps to think outside the box and learn how to solve problems and new challenges without fear!
My first experience abroad!

The greatest two months of my life
August 12, 2026by: Campbell Adams - United StatesThe program itself was amazing. I had a great placement. Work life is very fun and chill, but also enough work where I was learning a great amount. The program has a ton of opportunities to get together and do cool trips, but it also gives you the free freedom to travel. The two coordinators were awesome. Honestly made us feel so comfortable being in Barcelona.
Thank you so much for the lovely review, Campbell! We’re so glad to hear that you had such an amazing experience with both your internship and the wider Barcelona program. It’s especially great to hear how much you enjoyed the activities and the time spent with our Barcelona Community Team. We always try to plan a mix of experiences that help you discover parts of the city and local culture that you might not necessarily seek out on your own, so hearing that some of your best memories in Barcelona came from those experiences means a lot to us. We loved having you as part of our Barcelona community and are so happy that Beyond Academy helped make your summer abroad such a memorable one. Wishing you all the best with whatever comes next!

August 12, 2026by: Collin Cribben - United StatesI couldn’t have asked for a better program to join. Everyone was so amazing and our program leaders were the absolute best and the events were extremely fun. I was placed in the best internship I could have asked for.
Thank you so much for the amazing review, Collin! We’re so glad to hear that you had such a positive experience in Barcelona and that your internship was such a great fit. Getting to work inside Barcelona’s Olympic Stadium alongside other international interns sounds like a pretty memorable way to spend a summer! We also love hearing how much you enjoyed being part of the smaller Barcelona community and, of course, your time with Isabel. Our events are all about giving everyone the opportunity to experience the city together and build genuine friendships, so it’s great to hear that they became something you looked forward to each week! We absolutely loved having you as part of our Barcelona community and hope you’re leaving with some amazing memories, friendships and professional experience to take forward with you. Wishing you all the best with whatever comes next!
Great Support
August 11, 2026by: Eli Morcos - United StatesLiving and working on the other side of the world in a completely different culture is not the easiest thing in the world. Beyond Academy made this transition as smooth as possible, and made sure that I was safe and accounted for frequently throughout my two months there.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Elias! We’re so happy to hear that you felt supported throughout every stage of your journey, from the visa process and internship search right through to your time on the ground in Bangkok. It’s especially great to hear that we were able to find an internship that combined the industries you were most interested in and helped you gain experience in exactly the areas you wanted to explore. We know that moving across the world can feel daunting, so it means a lot to hear that our team helped make the process smooth and enjoyable. We loved having you as part of our Bangkok community and hope you’re leaving with valuable professional experience, incredible memories and the confidence to take on your next adventure. Wishing you all the best with whatever comes next!
