The Australia Experience

July 17, 2025by: Sophia Talo - United States

This was a wonderful program in a not-so-traveled part of Australia. When Americans think of Australia, they usually imagine Sydney or Melbourne. But Perth is quite the city gem. It's a very culturally rich city with fun activities, festivals, and museums. The area has plenty of nature, with Yanchep National Park nearby as well. There are plenty of fun places to go, and it is a large city to explore. The University is world-renowned, and the campus is beautiful. Everyone I met was so kind, and we were offered many opportunities to go out and explore the city and the surrounding area. I interned at Mosman Park Football Club as a Sports Trainer, and it was a fun way to meet people in the community, even see them out in the city. I was close with my mentor, and she still is a great friend of mine. The internship does not take away from your travel; if anything, they encourage it! My course work was difficult but nothing that was different from my home university. It was nice to learn from professors that are knowledgeable in their field. As a pre-health professional a study abroad experience is essential. It might seem impossible with the course work, shadowing and interning. But, you can do it all and still explore and learn and gain expirience. Especially if you aren't fluent in a language, Australia is a good alternitive.

Abroad with Koalas!!

I couldn't have asked for a better experience. The first week in Australia really set the tone for the entire trip. The orientation week was located in Cairns, Australia and we got to know the other interns in our home city and other cities as well. We also learned about aboriginal culture and the pride Australians take in it, and we were given an insight on Australian culture and how to decipher the slang used. I stayed in Brisbane, Australia and as a Zoology major I was placed at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. I had a very open learning environment and had hands-on experience with animals I didn't even know existed before going to Australia. I had an insane moment when I saw a baby koala come out of the mothers pouch when I was cleaning the enclosure. The layout of my internship allowed me the time to explore and travel to other cities and even see the North Island of New Zealand. However, before I started traveling I really got to find my way around Brisbane with my Residential Directors help and recommendations. Trivia Tuesdays at Stockies Exchange Hotel never failed us.

This trip was the best experience of my entire life so far! The memories that I have gained from going to Australia are unmatched. If you are debating on if you should go, just go!! I grew so much in my confidence, made amazing friends from all over the world, learned from the best of those in my aspired career, and took part in Australian culture. I also had the opportunity to attend fun sporting events, travel to other areas of Australia, and work alongside well-known athletes!

I had the time of my life. I feel like the two months I spent in Australia were a movie. So much happened, and I learned a lot about myself and my future profession. I made friends with people that I never would have even known had I not gone. At my gym, I learned new skills like how to coach children and how to properly execute and teach different lifts. I also go to discover some cultural differences in coaching styles in Australia vs the USA. I made friends with and met some professional athletes and even sat front row of my new favorite sports AFL and Rugby. I definitely recommend it.

Best abroad experience!

I have had the pleasure of studying and interning abroad in Perth, at the University of Western Australia with TEAN and ISA. I have had the most fantastic time exploring Australia and meeting new people. TEAN and ISA has made coming over here so easy with all of the help they provided me by helping me find my internship, student accommodation, and support 24/7 while abroad. I have met some of the most amazing people not only through my student accommodation and University but also other students that are here through TEAN and ISA. I have made lifelong friendships with those students and will cherish that forever. Some of the amazing opportunities and excursions that I have been able to do through TEAN and ISA was going to Cairns in Queensland and seeing the Great Barrier Reef, I have been able to go surfing, and also watch a professional AFL game. This is just a few of the many extra excursions and activities TEAN provides for their students abroad.

I had a wonderful experience, with some of my favorite parts being those provided by ISA. Orientation in Cairns was a once-in-a-lifetime experienced and remained a highlight of my semester abroad, especially exploring the Great Barrier Reef. My encouragement to others would be to take advantage of every opportunity, especially those provided by ISA.

This program reinforced my love for trying new things and meeting new people. I made lifelong friends from the program and from my workplace, I was able to visit somewhere I had always wanted to go, and I grew as a person and as a young professional. I truly wouldn’t trade this experience for anything and I will continue to recommend it to people.

Digging down under: why I loved my experience in Australia

My experience working with ISA & TEAN to make my goal of studying abroad a reality was fantastic. The chance to intern abroad in Melbourne, Australia exceeded all my expectations in the best way, and truly changed my life. Working with Xena throughout the entire process made everything incredibly easy, and I cannot thank her enough for all her efforts in making this the most enjoyable experience. She is a wonderful human who made the transitions and travel happen seamlessly, and will always be a mentor and friend. I have never been to a place like Australia, and I instantly fell in love, feeling right at home exploring the wonderful city of Melbourne. The people of Australia are the most genuine, easy going, and welcoming I have ever encountered, and the way of living is breezy. The differences in culture was eye-opening, and sparked my desire to see the world and be everywhere. My internship placement was the best and most unique work experience I have had yet, as a student physiotherapist intern with Prahran FC, a local footy team. I learned so much from my supervisor and got to do hands on work with the players that I otherwise would not have while interning in the U.S. The staff, team and everyone was so welcoming, and allowed us to participate in their club traditions like weekly dinners, post-game socials, and the mid-season gala. Working with the players provided me with the opportunity to interact and learn so much about Australian culture in an organic way that I otherwise would have missed out on. Overall, the entirety of the experience was absolutely extraordinary, and I would recommend it to anyone who is considering going abroad. This experience was exceptional in so many ways, and I cannot thank ISA/TEAN enough for all their hard work and effort into making my time down under the best it could possibly be.

I was lucky enough to be placed in Perth, Australia last summer! I worked with a footy team as a sports trainer and got to learn so much! Everyone there was incredible and willing to go out of the way to make the experience even better. I got to learn hands on how to treat and prevent injuries and watch the footy games up close! It is now my new favorite sport! While abroad I was also easily able to travel to other places like Melbourne, Sydney, and even Bali. I was able to get the full Australian experience and play with koalas and kangaroos as well as see the Great Barrier Reef which they are highly known for. The views are breath taking and this was an experience I will never forget thanks to ISA by Worldstrides. Definitely recommend going if the opportunity arises!!

Despite being sent home due to COVID-19, this experience was one of the best. I got to study and intern in what I think is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Perth is a wonderful place to study abroad because the culture is fun, weather is great, and professional networking is similar to the US. I got to intern for an Aussie Rules Football team where I was a sports trainer. I learned a lot of hands-on skills and gained a lot of clinical experience. TEAN was a great program to work with because they make sure you are all set before you leave your home country, they get you set up once you are there and are available for support whenever you need it when you are in the host country, and they make departure a breeze also. TEAN sets you up for nothing but success.

My global remote internship and my personal creative project

TEAN’s programs always stand out to me, I feel like they try their best to accommodate a student’s needs to the best of their ability. Just overall, very understanding and dedicated to a student’s safety, personal and professional development as well as their interests. I say this because, throughout the course of my global remote internship, I organized and hosted a virtual conference which was classified as my own creative project where I interned for a very prominent NGO known as Teaching North Korean Refugees (TNKR) based in Seoul, South Korea. Where the project I created was a virtual conference centered around spreading awareness about female North Korean refugees and fundraising for TNKR’s new program designed to provide refugee women with the opportunity to gain work experience, a stipend, and adequate health insurance.

During the 4 week global remote internship I was placed with an Australian company, Aspect Studios, I along with 3 other team members worked on a market research project. I would not trade this experience for anything as I was able to gain real world experience in my field without the financial burdens that come with traveling.

Best summer experience

I have had the privilege of study abroad (2018) and interning abroad (2019) with TEAN. The experiences that I have had with them have been a dream come true. From the start, the application to both programs were easy to understand; any questions that I had while doing them were answered quickly by the friendly and supportive staff. The first few weeks of both experiences began with an incredible orientation: fun activities, time to meet new people and of course learning the culture of the country. After orientation, the studying and interning began. I quickly grew to love the cities that I was living in; the support of TEAN staff made sure that I new all the ins and outs to make sure that I was having the best experience. I must admit, TEAN made it hard to say goodbye and head home; why would someone want to leave a paradise experience? If you are looking for a program to study or intern abroad, TEAN will be the one for you.

I loved my internship experience in Australia! The first week at the Cairns orientation was spectacular! We went snorkeling and diving in the Great Barrier reef, went on a walk through the rainforest with an Aboriginal guide, and had a chance to skydive, raft, bungee jump, or hot air balloon. My internship in stem cell research was really beneficial for furthering my education and experience and I know it will help my resume and graduate school application be more competitive. I also had a great time in Adelaide going to Australian Football games, going to the beach, spending time in wine country, and spend time in the city center. The TEAN staff were amazing and always there if I needed help or support! The local TEAN staff in Adelaide had great connections and coupons to get discounted or free meals or events. I will always remember the sites I saw and the friends I met!

After completing my internship this past fall, I knew that this experience would always be memorable in my life. I was able to work at a sports trainer + first aid in Perth. Australia. I worked with kids of all different ages and that played all different sports such as Australian football, soccer, basketball, netball and more. This internship provided me with multiple techniques and tools that I will continue to use during my career path. The atmosphere was phenomenal , the people were friendly and I felt like I was at my second home. Overall, I will recommend this program and this amazing country to anyone who is considering either. I also thank TEAN and everyone else who helped me through the best three months of my life

My experience interning with TEAN was truly once in a lifetime. As a statistics major with the desire to work in Sport Analytics, I was unsure of the availability of a position for me, especially on the other side of the world. However, TEAN found a great opportunity for me in Perth with the Athletic Institute, which enabled me to strengthen my interpersonal and analytical skills, all while learning and working with an Aussie Rules Football Club. In regards to the program, I really appreciated that I was given enough tools to succeed, all while learning so much and having a chance to completely immerse myself in Aussie culture. Reflecting back, I have become much more confident and independent as a person, and have great memories which will last a lifetime.

I completed a Sports Medicine internship in Perth, Australia through TEAN. After talking about my career goals and interests, my TEAN adviser provided me with my placement in Perth which was an even better experience than I imagined! I worked as a trainer with a Western Australia Football League team. I was able to gain a lot of hands on skills and knowledge. TEAN helped me throughout my whole internship with their friendly staff, by offering support, answering emails quickly and providing local excursions to explore Perth. Perth was a great city to be in, it has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere while also having an intense sports culture. I made so many friends through my internship too. Overall, TEAN provided me with an amazing internship placement and I highly recommend going through TEAN to for your internship abroad!

I applied to TEAN's Australia Summer Internship program for summer of 2018. I interned in Cairns, Queensland for two months at Rainforestation Nature Park, Cairns Zoom and Wildlife Dome and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. As a biology major, working at these three parks solidified my dreams of becoming a wildlife rehabilitator. I was able to work with the animals everyday, learning everything I could from my supervisors. I am so glad that TEAN actually took my interests and future goals into consideration when looking for a placement for me; it felt so amazing to finally be able to take that first step towards my future career and help exotic animals. TEAN was always keeping in contact with me to make sure that the internship was flowing smoothly and that I was safe and content with my overall experience. Working with TEAN staff was never a hassle and they were always willing to help out if need be. I had a wonderful time interning abroad with TEAN and I recommend it 100%!

Australia, the dream you may be lucky enough to only live once

I had a chance to intern abroad in Australia this past summer and it was a once in a life time experience. It had always been my dream to travel there but something I never saw as realistic. Thankfully through my school, WVU and TEAN, I was given the chance to make my dreams become reality. I interned at a film company for 8 weeks and lived in Australia for 10. TEAN did a perfect job with setting me up with the perfect internship. I worked at Off the Map Productions and still keep in contact with my boss. TEAN also offered great outside activities like a rugby match and scuba diving as outside activities with the program. 10/10 recommend this experience.

Summer internship experience of a lifetime

Applying for an internship through TEAN was the best decision I could have ever made. They were extremely helpful before and during the duration of my trip, making sure I booked my flights and knew where to go once I arrived in Sydney. The TEAN staff is extremely dedicated and wants all of their students to enjoy their time and placement in Australia. I spoke with them a lot so they got to know me and knew what type of internship placement I wanted. My internship was in healthcare, and I interned at two different Sydney Children's hospitals for eight weeks. I gained so much experience working with children as well as working in a hospital setting. While abroad, I lived in a newly renovated apartment that was extremely nice. TEAN was always there to answer any questions or concerns I had about my internship or Australia in general. On the weekends, I did activities from taking a surfing lesson at Bondi beach to attending a rugby game. I as well traveled to the Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Cairns (Great Barrier Reef). I loved how in addition to strengthening my resume I also got to learn about Australia's culture by traveling and exploring. Interning abroad was an amazing experience and something I will truly never forget. I highly recommend everyone strongly considers interning in Sydney, Australia.

Best summer of my life

Deciding to do a summer internship in Australia was truly the best decision I've ever made. Being pre-med, it's really hard to study abroad since you can't take pre-reqs abroad, but this program was the perfect solution. My internship was doing research on cognitive deficits following concussion on the neuropsychiatry service through Hunter New England Health in Newcastle, and it was an absolutely amazing opportunity. I got the chance to experience clinical research first hand in an international setting, which was pretty huge. I also had the opportunity to travel around Australia and saw amazing places including The Great Barrier Reef, Byron Bay, the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, and the Whitsunday Islands, which was truly the most beautiful place I've ever been. I've made friendships with both Australians and Americans that will last a lifetime, which is an incredibly priceless reward of doing this program. This program has truly spiked my desire to keep traveling, as it has taught me that travel truly is the most important source of learning and self growth.

The experience of a lifetime!

This whole experience has changed my life. As cliché as that sounds, I can say with complete honesty that it is 100% true. Before this trip I had never been out of North America, let alone, away from my family and friends for this long. While there were definitely times where it was tough and I really didn’t want to do this whole thing anymore, I found ways to stick it out. I took trips and saw places like nothing I had ever seen before. I made friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime. I truly experienced what it is like to live and work abroad. But most importantly, this trip allowed me to develop and grow as a young adult, who is looking forward to my next adventure; wherever that may take me.

Australia: a trip of a lifetime

Going to Australia was one of the best experiences I could have possibly decided to do, however my experience abroad turned out to be a bit more unique than your regular study abroad program. I broke my ankle two days before I was supposed to fly across the world. Having to change my flight to a week later, get two screws in my ankle to permanently put my foot together, and fly over and spend my entirety of my trip on crutches, you could say I was put to the test. TEAN however truly did help me as I attempted to mend myself. I had doctor visits to go to and therapy. I could not have done it without their helping hand, particularly one individual. I grew as a person because of my fallback and I thank TEAN for their helping hand.
