CIEE Summer Intern and Study Abroad are 6 to 7-credit, 6-week programs with a part-time internship (approximately 20 hours weekly), a seminar, and a 3-credit academic course. CIEE Semester Internships CIEE Semester Global Internships are 9 to 13-credit, 12-week programs that feature a full-time internship (approximately 30 hours weekly), a seminar, and an optional 3 to 4-credit academic course online. CIEE Semester Intern and Study Abroad Programs are 12 to 14-credit, 12-week programs that feature a part-time internship​ (approximately 20 hours weekly), a seminar, and two academic courses.

This adventure combines educational projects, cultural immersion, and exciting excursions in the heart of Costa Rica's rainforests and vibrant cities. With a group size of 8 to 13 participants, teens will engage in vital rainforest conservation efforts, explore the enchanting Volcan Poas, and dive into thrilling underwater activities at Cahuita National Park. The program offers a perfect blend of environmental stewardship and cultural experiences, including a scenic hike through San José, a boat excursion, and local culinary tastings. Participants will stay in a volunteer house surrounded by tropical gardens, contributing to biodiversity mapping, reforestation, and sustainable living practices. Launch your conservation journey in Uvita, a tranquil beach town on Costa Rica’s southern Pacific coast. Surrounded by rainforest and warm ocean waters, Uvita is home to the iconic whale tail sandbar at Playa Uvita and the breathtaking Marino Ballena National Park, a protected marine sanctuary renowned for humpback whale migrations (July–October), dolphins, manta rays, and vibrant tropical wildlife. As an intern, you’ll spend three days per week working alongside park rangers supporting conservation through trail maintenance, beach cleanups, signage projects, visitor engagement, and digital outreach. Gain firsthand insight into Costa Rica’s world-leading sustainability model while developing environmental education and social media skills. Two days a week, you’ll assist at a local surf hostel, supporting guest services, gardening, and marketing initiatives. Enjoy access to a surfboard, free beach entry, and potential surf lessons. The programs carried out by GVI Costa Rica takes a holistic approach to the conservation of the area. GVI helps to monitor every ecosystem of this incredibly diverse area - forest, canal, beach, and sea. As with all conservation initiatives, numerous essential factors are involved to make and carry out informed decisions – trained personnel, resources, and accurate information. You have the opportunity to gain an internationally recognized qualification in Biological Survey Techniques in this internship program. Live and work with our research team in a remote environment, where you will gain vital skills and experience essential for future work in the field of conservation or beyond. Included in your training is a First Aid qualification course.
