Media Internships Abroad

Media internships abroad have grown enormously as endless media outlets and technological tools have given us access to everything at the click of a finger. The media industry has developed from listening to sports on the radio to being able to watch them live on a computer anywhere in the world. As a rapidly developing industry, radio, TV, and film have become competitive fields, and it is therefore becoming more and more difficult to get your foot in the door of the media world. Media internships abroad will elevate your credibility and help you appear as a more appealing candidate for future jobs. After all, media acts as a window into foreign cultures and people.

Why Intern Abroad in Media

Media internships abroad allow interns to see the world through a new perspective. Interns will learn how other countries portray their own current events, culture, and traditions via diverse media channels (whether it be films, radio broadcasts, or TV shows). Media interns will be able to compare and contrast the media techniques used in their own country with that of their host country, and learn about new innovations as well as best practices. In the same way, individuals will gain a true understanding of the local culture and way of life through media internships abroad.

International media internships are the best way to get true hands-on experience in the industry, as it is inherently all about global connectivity. Interns will be able to learn about how TV shows, films, and radio broadcasts are formulated, produced, and promoted in their host country, which is knowledge that will be very useful in their future careers. By adding a media internship abroad to your resume, you will be illustrating your high level of commitment to the field on a global scale. When it comes to media, an international perspective is most definitely a highly sought after attribute that future employers will appreciate!

Globally, media is a strong, powerful field, so you will have endless options when it comes to choosing the location of your media internship abroad. Variety is key when it comes media knowledge growth, so you may want to choose somewhere that you have never been and somewhere that has a completely different approach to media than your home country!

South Africa is an exciting place to intern abroad in media because of its history and recent society development. Due to its latest transformations, the radio, TV, and film industries have become more broad, liberalized, and shared with other countries, and subsequently with different cultures. Due to its fast growth, international interns are highly sought after fill internship placements in South Africa to offer fresh and new perspectives on the industry.

The United States has always been renowned as a leader in media industry, as home to the infamous Hollywood, California, which produces the majority of the world’s hit movies and big budget films. Those who intern in the United States may have the opportunity to intern with a company that conducts business across multiple media outlets, or markets, or choose a specific media subfield to focus on in an in-depth internship placement.

Since English is the leading language for media around the world, there are many great media internship opportunities in Australia as well. This country also offers beautiful outdoor landscapes and scenery making it a great location for films and TV shows. Some famous movies that have been shot there include Star Wars and Jurassic Park, making it an ideal location for film lovers.

Media Internships Abroad

One of the best times for media internships abroad is during the summer months, when the weather is nice and field work can be carried out with ease. But make sure to check when “summer” is in the country that you would like to intern in, since the northern and southern hemisphere are different! Interning abroad over the summer months is also ideal for students who are in school full time during the rest of the year. Local and national media outlets accept interns year-round, but tend to focus on the summer months because of the convenience it provides for students.

Internship Hosts. Depending on what kind of media internship abroad you are seeking, a local company may offer smaller scale, more one-on-one internship duties, while a larger company will provide you with more brand recognition to add to your resume.

Requirements. If you are choosing to focus on one particular aspect within a media subfield, prior experience and/or knowledge of the field may be required (i.e. a film production internship may require experience editing and working with film cuts). In general, all media interns should have excellent communication skills and a passion for sharing information with the world. However, many media internships abroad also want to attract newcomers to the field, so interns will be able to easily learn as they work.

Responsibilities. Regardless of the level of difficulty, however, your day to day tasks will look very different depending on what subfield of media interests you, whether, TV, radio, or film. For example, if you are interested in TV show production, you may assist in product promotion or marketing research, and therefore you’ll end up producing a personal portfolio by the end of your internship!

Career-Focused. While the field of media production is popular, entertaining, and fun, it is also taken very seriously. Media internships abroad will help interns’ resumes stand out from their peers. Employers like to see that potential new hires are determined to expand their horizons in this field, and international experience proves that perfectly!

Communication. Interns will be expected to be in non-stop communication with other staff members and clientele throughout their internship placement. In this way, media is a field that places a high importance on being to communicate effectively with a variety of people. It takes a large team to create a TV show, radio broadcast, or film, and every part of the team will be required to do specific tasks and work together to create the production goal.

Team Work. A valuable media intern will be able to juggle many responsibilities that are necessary and assigned from any and all staff members. Even if you are focusing on only one aspect of media, you will still need to be open-minded about the rest of the projects or tasks being done. Interning abroad in media offers the chance to work with a diverse group of people, both in and out of the office, or studio.
