Humanities Internships Abroad

Humanities is a broadly spanning category of academia which encompasses diverse branches of philosophy, literature, linguistics, and just about everything else that relates to being human. Yet, while specific subjects within the field might vary significantly, students of the humanities often can relate to at least one unifying question, what will I do after college? A humanities internship abroad might just be the best first step you can take to finding what career suits you best.

Why Intern Abroad in Humanities

Pursuing a major within the humanities prepares you for a wide variety of professions by means of a deeply analytical study of human nature. Therefore, the field is largely unspecialized, so a lot graduates find themselves at a loss of what career path to pursue. Then comes the opportunity to intern abroad: the perfect opportunity to travel, reflect on what direction you will take on, and gain practical work experience. The only question becomes, where will you go and what will you do during your humanities internship abroad?

Since humanities is such a broad field, you can find internships abroad related to the humanities pretty much anywhere in the world. No one location is better than any other, it just depends on your personal interests and where you think might best give you the experience that you are looking for.

You should, however, bear a few additional considerations in mind when deciding where to pursue your humanities internship abroad. First consider the language barrier. You can find English speaking internships in humanities in many places around the world, but your options will obviously be more limited in places where English is a secondary language. However, language acquisition can be a valuable part of interning abroad, so if you have been studying a foreign language throughout college an international internship could be the perfect time to take your fluency to the next level.

Apart from language, additional factors to consider include expensiveness, infrastructural development, safety, and cultural differences. It might just be the best decision of your life choosing to pursue a humanities internship in rural Africa, for example, but prepare yourself for the culture shock that is bound to accompany the experience. Going somewhere drastically different can be both exciting and enlightening; as they say, the greater the risk, the greater the reward.

Humanities Internships Abroad

Humanities internships abroad come in all shapes and sizes. Wherever your academic interests lie, you can find a wide diversity of professional opportunities that utilize your skills and knowledge. In most fields, ranging from education to journalism to social work, employers value candidates with good people skills, communication abilities, and a passion for their work, all values emphasized throughout humanities coursework and degree programs.

The most common type of humanities internships abroad include working for museums, theaters, universities, and nonprofit organizations. Since the field is very general, interns can take on any number of positions and relate it back to humanities.

Most students who are currently enrolled in college choose to embark on their internship abroad over the summer term, and these usually last from two to three months. Academic credit is also sometimes offered in conjunction with gains from work experience, depending on the field you choose for your internship abroad. Recent graduates often take on longer internship placements, lasting up to six months. In either scenario, humanities internships abroad can be paid or unpaid, so take this into account when searching for the right fit within your budget.

  • See the World. Studying humanities in a classroom is all well and good, but getting out and immersing yourself in a different country’s culture will facilitate a whole new insight into human nature and expression. The people you meet and conversations you have while interning abroad can be extremely educational and grounding.
  • Make Connections. By undertaking an internship abroad in humanities, you will form connections, both personal and professional, with interesting people from all over the world. You’re bound to come away with a whole bevy of new friends and professional contacts!
  • Reflect. Interning abroad is a great way to reflect on your life goals and career aspirations. Who knows, maybe you’ll even decide to stay abroad and take up the expatriate life.
