Hands-On Veterinary Experience in Nepal: Animal Care, Rescue
Program Overview
Join our Hands-On Veterinary Experience in Kathmandu, Nepal — perfect for animal lovers and veterinary medical students who want real clinical experience, not just watching.
You work in a local vet clinic and animal rescue shelter in Kathmandu with Nepali vets. You help treat stray dogs, rescue cats, cows, goats, and community animals. You learn Nepali-style veterinary care with limited resources — a skill no classroom teaches.
For Animal Lovers (No experience needed): You feed, clean, walk, groom, and help with basic health checks for rescue animals. You learn to handle animals safely, give vitamins, and help with adoption.
For Vet Medical Students (Internship): You shadow and assist Nepali veterinarians in surgery, vaccination, wound care, and diagnosis. You get certificate, logbook hours, and case reports for your university.
Why Nepal? Nepal has 2 million stray dogs, many injured animals, and few vets. Your hands make real difference. You will see cases you never see in US/Europe — street dog injuries, tick fever, rabies vaccination, cow care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about Third Eye Volunteer Foundation Nepal.
: Do I need veterinary experience to join this program?
No. If you are an animal lover, you can join with no experience — you will feed, groom, walk and care for rescue animals. If you are a vet student, you will get hands-on clinical work, surgery observation, and logbook hours.
What animals will I work with in Nepal?
Mostly rescue dogs and cats, but also cows, goats, and sometimes wildlife. In Kathmandu clinic, you will see stray dogs, injured cats, and cows from Gau Shala. On weekend, you can visit Chitwan for rhino and elephant care.
Is this veterinary internship good for vet medical students?
Yes. This internship is made for vet students (DVM, BVSc, Vet Tech). You shadow Nepali vets, assist in vaccination, wound care, surgery, and diagnosis. You get 40 hours/week, signed logbook, case reports, and certificate for your university.
What skills will I learn as a vet student?
Vaccination, wound dressing, blood collection, IV fluids, animal restraint, rabies prevention, surgery observation, tick fever treatment, and Nepali-style vet care with limited resources.
How long is the veterinary program?
Minimum 2 weeks for animal lovers. For vet students, 4-12 weeks recommended to complete internship hours and case reports. You can start any day, all year.
Where is the vet clinic and shelter?
In Jawalakhel, Kathmandu — 15 minutes from homestay. You live in homestay nearby and take public tuktuk to clinic. It is a small local clinic + rescue shelter, not a big hospital — you get more hands-on time. It also provides mobile vet service and also treats zoo animals of central zoo in Kathmandu.
Is it safe to work with stray dogs in Nepal?
Yes, with our safety training. You learn safe handling on Day 1. You will be with experienced Nepali vet at all times. Rabies vaccination is recommended before you come. You will wear gloves and follow safety rules.
Do I get a certificate and logbook for university?
Yes. Vet students get certificate with total hours, skills learned, and supervisor signature (Dr., BVSc). We also sign your university logbook and case reports.
Do I need to speak Nepali to work with animals?
No. English is used in clinic. We give you a free Nepali language class — you learn animal words like "Kukur" (dog), "Biraloo" (cat), "Gai" (cow) — children and staff love it.
When should I apply?
Apply 4-6 weeks before your start date. We need time to arrange homestay and clinic placement. Last-minute applications (1 week before) also accepted if space is available.
