So glad we did this together

I came to Africa with a friend, and I'm so glad we got to share this experience together. From our time in the hospital to exploring and experiencing the culture, we learnt so much and made some amazing memories. The Go-Elective team was also very welcoming and made us feel comfortable throughout our stay.

An Experience I Will Never Forget

August 25, 2026by: Hailey Christensen - United States

My time in Kenya gave me the chance to experience healthcare in a way I had never seen before. I was able to spend time in different wards, learn from healthcare professionals, and witness moments that were both inspiring and difficult. Some of the cases I saw were heartbreaking, while others, like witnessing births, were incredibly moving. Seeing patients and families go through such different experiences gave me a much deeper appreciation for patient care and showed me how important compassion is in medicine. Outside the hospital, I really enjoyed learning more about Kenyan culture, meeting local people, and exploring Mombasa. Everyone I met was warm and welcoming, and the GoElective team made the whole experience feel organised, comfortable, and easy to enjoy. It was a trip that gave me so much to reflect on, both personally and professionally.

Stepping outside my comfort zone and traveling to Kenya for this program turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life, challenging me in ways that helped me grow both personally and professionally. Working alongside healthcare professionals and seeing the impact they have on patients every day made me realize just how important medicine is and strengthened my passion for pursuing a career in healthcare.

Are the destinations and accommodations safe?

GoElective prioritizes your safety by selecting stable and secure countries for international healthcare students. We monitor travel advice for our destinations and their neighbors to ensure your peace of mind. Participants stay in secure and spacious residences with meals, Wi-Fi, private transportation, and housekeeping. Contact our team for more details.

Is there an application process?

If you're enrolled in a pre-med, medical, nursing or dental program, or have recently completed a healthcare degree, you automatically qualify for a placement with GoElective. If you haven't contacted us yet, submit an inquiry and our team will guide you through the process.

Are there any limitations on booking availability?

Yes, slots are limited and fill up rapidly. We maintain a controlled number of students in each department to uphold the quality of our clinical placements. As spaces fill up fast, we encourage you to book as soon as possible to secure your spot (especially if you plan to travel as a group).

Does GoElective assist with Visa, eTA and or flights arrangements?

Yes, we assist with visas. If you require assistance with flights, please inform us, and we'll provide guidance and support to facilitate the process. We usually handle this during pre-trip virtual sessions with our team.

What is a typical workday like for program participants?

Participants typically spend 5-7 hours in the hospital, with downtime in the afternoons for activities such as volunteering in a local school, language lessons, global health tutorials, and sightseeing. Weekends are free for excursions, safaris, or relaxation, though participants may choose to work in the hospital during this time.
