How to Intern Internationally

Overview

How to get an internship abroad

If you want to know how to get an international internship, it’s actually quite similar to finding a study abroad program. Start by asking yourself two key questions:

  • What are your career goals? Finding internships abroad largely depends on narrowing down your career goals. Once you know what it is that you want to do or which skills you want to improve, you’ll be that much closer to finding the right internship abroad for you.
  • Do you need college credit? - Are you a college student seeking credit towards your degree, or are you a post grad or even mid-career professional? If you don’t require college credit for your international internship, it will actually greatly widen your options, since some university degree programs can be strict about what they accept for credit. If you don’t need college credit, your program options are basically limitless—meaning your dream internship is practically guaranteed. Intern abroad organizations have connections all over the world, so if you’re willing to pay the program fee, you’ll get unrivaled experience to add to your resume or CV.

Locations

Where to find an international internship

If you’re looking for internships overseas rather than in your home city or country, then we can guess you have an affinity for travel. If you have a specific type of internship abroad in mind, it might make the destination obvious. However, if you simply want professional experience in a certain destination in order to perfect your language skills or learn the cultural norms, then you should let that guide your program search.

If you're trying to improve your Spanish skills, then choosing Spain, Mexico, or Peru could be good places to start with. But if you want to immerse yourself in Japanese culture then you're going to have to go to Japan.

International internships exist everywhere in the world! But if you want to know where to start looking, start with where you want to go. It can also be helpful to either look for international internships at your companies of interest, or to ask your program advisor where the best internships in your career field are located. When looking for the best places to intern abroad, it helps to think about your career goals first.

If you want to explore the business world, then places like France, China, and Italy could be a great start. But if you're more interested in wildlife or conservation, then you'll want to consider destinations like Costa Rica, South Africa, or Thailand.

Finances

How to afford an internship

How will you pay for an internship abroad? Interning abroad through a program can be pricey, but worth it. Your internship provider will find you a killer placement in your chosen field, while taking care of details like accommodation and meals. Some even offer post-internship job finding assistance! All of these benefits come at a price, but it pays off (sometimes literally). Plus, it’s not impossible to find a paid internship abroad (although you’ll have to do a bit more digging).

Many students and young professionals opt to fundraise for their international internships, but scholarships and grants for interning abroad also exist!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to find internships abroad

If you’re looking for an internship abroad, a common misconception is that you need to find and apply for specific opportunities, as you would normally do with jobs.

However, there are actually thousands of opportunities to custom-build a guaranteed internship abroad. These opportunities operate similarly to study abroad, but are instead focused specifically on professional growth and experience. Our internships abroad directory is a great place to start your search. This is an excellent resource if you want to search by destination, career field, or timeframe.

Are there paid internships abroad?

Yes, there are definitely paid internships abroad. However, it will be far more common to find unpaid internships. Depending on your field and destination, paid internship opportunities are few and far between and tend to be a lot more competitive.

If you want to intern abroad but can only find unpaid internships, then you’ll need to find the additional value in the experience. Will you be able to network with important professionals in your industry? Will you receive help with writing your resume and cover letter? Will you get a letter of recommendation or two? Early in your career, these types of benefits can change the trajectory of your career.

Are internships abroad useful?

Internships abroad are highly useful! This is true no matter what your academic or career field is, but especially so if you plan to live or work abroad someday, or really want a way to make your resume more competitive. Interning abroad is an excellent way to get work experience while availing all the other benefits offered by studying abroad.

What are some benefits of internships abroad?

There are many benefits of interning abroad—namely, the exceptional personal and professional growth that comes hand-in-hand with the experience. Plus, internships abroad are flexible. You can intern abroad during college, after graduation, or if you’re interested in a career change, and there are thousands of opportunities across dozens of fields.

And not to mention, you’ll have life-changing adventures and make tons of new friends and connections!

What are the best intern abroad programs like?

With thousands of opportunities around the world, how do you find the best of the best when it comes to internships abroad? It’s actually pretty simple—it all comes down to what your goals are and what you want out of an internship abroad!

A few things your internship should absolutely have are pre-departure support, resume writing help, help with your job search post-internship, and alumni networking. And if the entire premise of your internship is a custom placement, you should expect them to deliver on your initial wants and requests.

Program: Explore, Learn, and Work in Uruguay with Adelante Abroad!

5

Personally, I felt like a local. Knowing the streets, catching the bus, and speaking the same language has made me felt like home. I compare constantly Uruguay to my home country and notice the many beautiful things this country has to offer that my country lacks. Uruguay is culturally rich with enticing music, interesting history and breath taking nature this small country has. Profesionally, I got know and open doors with veterinarians from Latin America. I will definitely miss my friends from the clinic, house and street. The cold was the hardest part of my trip. Coming from a tropical island to a humid winter has tought me to take care of your extremities, stay warm and dry. Be comfortable in being uncomfortable, it will help you go through many culture shocks, home sickness, and lifestyle changes throughout your journey.

Program: Intern in Barcelona with Connect-123!

5

I told Connect-123 I wanted something in finance, and I knew that could be hard to find. They ended up finding me an internship at Asabys Partners, a venture capital firm in Barcelona. An opportunity like that is so hard to get back home in the U.S., and I got to do it through them. It was exactly what I was looking for. I loved where we lived, too. The neighborhood was great, and they made sure we were close to the metro, which made it easy to get around. The events were honestly one of my favorite parts. They were really well organized, and there was always something going on with the other students. Big shoutout to the coordinators. They were super nice and would message me just to see how things were going. Any time I texted them, they got back to me quickly. I had a couple of things come up while I was there, and they helped me sort them out. It meant a lot knowing I had people I could count on in Barcelona.

Program: Intern in Stockholm with Absolute Internship

5

My two months in Stockholm have been an incredible mix of overcoming the fear of failure, embracing the chance to be part of something bigger, and stepping far outside my comfort zone. Traveling to a completely new country and city entirely on my own for the first time - while simultaneously tackling my very first professional work experience - was both a challenge and a dream. The internship itself was absolutely amazing. Absolute Internship found the perfect match for me and supported me every step of the way, helping me navigate any hurdles I encountered. Beyond the professional growth, I connected with so many amazing people from all over the world, made wonderful new friends (including fellow Italians!), and I truly cannot thank the team enough for making this happen. Looking back, I watched myself grow: exploring a brand-new city on my own, facing challenges with a fresh sense of awareness, and learning to be much kinder and more considerate to myself. I enjoyed every single moment of this journey, and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!

I learned so much from talking to the health professionals and I learned so much just by observing here day to day. I would highly recommend this internship with Cerca Abroad because they’re very good and very fast and efficient in communication. Athens is also a beautiful place to explore and has such a beautiful history.

Program: Global Development Internships in Kosovo

5

I was connected to Isla through my Graduate program to fulfill a requirement for my program and I’m so glad I chose Isa. From the in-country support to the scheduled activities everything was taken care of. You do pay a fee, but that fee covers housing, in-country support, and scheduled activities. I didn’t have to worry about finding a place to stay, navigating the city, or what to do in an emergency because Isla helps you with all of that. As someone who had never traveled alone before it gave me peace of mind knowing there was someone I could call. The internship I got exposed me to a new field I didn’t even know existed, and I completely changed my career path because of Isla. I couldn’t have ever imagined traveling across the world on my own, and with Isla, I didn’t have to.

A Great Choice for My University Elective

Program: Medical & Pre-med Internships Abroad | Go Elective

4

I needed to complete an elective placement as part of my medical degree, and my university had shared a link to Go-Elective as one of the options to consider. After looking through the program and speaking with the team, I decided to apply. The whole process was pretty straightforward, and the team helped me with the documents I needed for my university. My favorite department was the Emergency Department. One of the cases that will definitely stay with me involved a patient who had been brought in following a serious road accident. It was difficult to witness. It made me realise how emotionally challenging working in medicine can be and how important it is to remain professional even in difficult situations. I was mainly looking for somewhere to complete my elective requirement, but I ended up learning much more than I expected. I'm really glad I enrolled, and I'd definitely recommend Go-Elective to other medical students looking for clinical experience beyond just shadowing. I think you can get even more out of the placement if you're already in your clinical years, since you have some practical knowledge to build on. It becomes easier to follow case discussions, ask questions, and participate in patient care whenever appropriate

I Went to Barcelona for an Internship. I Left With a Whole New Life.

November 05, 2026by: Ande Wilken - United States

Program: Internships in Barcelona - Adelante Abroad

5

When I first started looking into programs abroad, I had no idea just how much this experience would change my life. I never had the opportunity to study abroad during college, and it was something I had always wished I could experience. I wanted more than just a vacation. I wanted to actually live somewhere new, immerse myself in another culture, improve my Spanish, meet new people, and gain professional experience that would help me grow in my career. I remember sitting down with my mom and comparing a few different programs when we came across Adelante Abroad. After looking into everything they offered, we both agreed that it seemed like exactly what I was looking for. I scheduled my first interview, and from that very first phone call, I just had a feeling I had found the right program. What stood out to me immediately was how genuine everyone was. I never felt like someone was trying to sell me an experience. They took the time to get to know me, understand what I was hoping to gain, and make sure the program was actually a good fit for me and not just them. I got off that call feeling even more excited and confident about taking such a big step. Throughout the entire process leading up to my departure, the Adelante team was incredibly helpful and responsive. Moving to another country can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to figure everything out on your own, but they made sure I had all the information I needed and knew what to expect. For my internship, I was placed with a small business in Barcelona, where I worked closely with the couple who ran it. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better placement. They were some of the sweetest, most welcoming people, and from the beginning, they made me feel like part of their team. I got to work on marketing projects, create content, help with workshops, and experience what it was like to work in a completely different environment and culture. It was such a unique opportunity to build my resume while learning things I never would have experienced in a traditional job back home. But beyond the professional experience, I genuinely loved the people I worked with, and that made it even more special. My housing experience was wonderful too. I stayed with a lovely woman who was incredibly kind and welcoming. She helped me practice my Spanish, and having someone local to talk to made adjusting to life in Spain feel so much more natural. I lived near the Sagrada Família, which still feels surreal to say! I felt safe and comfortable in my home and neighborhood, and I loved being able to walk outside and explore such an incredible city. One of my favorite parts of the program was having Spanish classes included. Not only did they help me improve my language skills, but they were also one of the first places I started meeting people. I also used friendship apps to connect with other people living in Barcelona, and something I quickly realized was that so many people were in the exact same position as me. Everyone was looking to make friends, explore, and create new experiences. And those friendships became one of the most meaningful parts of my entire time abroad! I met people from all over the world who started as complete strangers and became friends I know I’ll have for the rest of my life. We explored the city, tried new restaurants, made spontaneous plans, traveled, and created memories that I will always look back on! Barcelona itself is unlike anywhere I’ve ever been. There’s something for everyone here. You can spend the morning at the beach, wander through beautiful historic streets, discover amazing food, enjoy the nightlife, or simply sit outside at a café and take in the atmosphere. I loved having the opportunity to travel and explore places I had never been before, but some of my absolute favorite days were the ordinary ones spent just living in Barcelona. And I think that’s what made this experience so different from traveling as a tourist. I wasn’t just visiting another country. I was building a little life here. I learned how to navigate a new city, communicate in another language, make friends from scratch, adapt to a different culture, and become so much more independent. I discovered how capable I was of creating a life somewhere completely unfamiliar. And somewhere along the way, I even fell in love, which was certainly not something I expected when I signed up for an internship abroad! But here’s the part that really says everything about my experience: I loved my time in Barcelona so much that after my program ended, I decided to come back. I’m now living in Barcelona again, continuing my Spanish studies, and building a life in a city that I originally came to know through Adelante Abroad. When I think about how it all started, it’s crazy to realize that one decision, one interview, and one internship could lead to so much. I signed up because I wanted international work experience and an opportunity to do something I had missed out on during college. I ended up gaining professional skills, confidence, independence, lifelong friendships, a deeper appreciation for another culture, and a place in the world that now feels like a second home. If you’re considering going abroad but you’re nervous about taking that step, I genuinely cannot recommend Adelante enough. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you go. I certainly didn’t. Sometimes you just have to give yourself the opportunity to experience something new and see where it takes you. I went to Barcelona hoping to have an unforgettable few months. I never imagined those few months would change the direction of my life. And it all started with Adelante Abroad.

The Opportunity That Gave Me My Career

Program: Intern in London with Absolute Internship

5

My experience with Absolute Internship was quite literally life changing. They placed me in an internship (UK-ASEAN Business Council) which is exactly what i was looking to do then as a junior International Relations major. Little did I know, it would lead me to my career working for the British Government overseas. Thanks to Absolute's placement and the experience I gained working for UKABC for 8 weeks, I landed my dream job right out of college - covering sports and entertainment as a commercial officer for the British Consulate Los Angeles. I spent 6 years as a commercial officer (climbing the ranks) and was offered the opportunity to transition to policy work, earlier this year, for the Consulate covering culture, media and sport. I am the only person covering this sector outside of Whitehall in London which I am incredibly proud to be doing. That said, I literally would be where I am without Absolute Internship's program and opportunity for me.

Program: Intern in Stockholm with Absolute Internship

5

My experience with Absolute Internship in Stockholm, Sweden, was truly one of the most rewarding experiences of my college journey. As a Business of Creative Enterprises student at Emerson College, I wanted an opportunity that would allow me to step outside my comfort zone, gain real-world professional experience, and experience a different culture. Absolute Internship gave me the opportunity to do all three. What made this experience so special was that it went beyond simply completing an internship. I had the opportunity to explore Stockholm, immerse myself in Swedish culture, meet people from all over the world, and learn how businesses operate in an international environment. Through company visits and professional experiences with internationally recognized organizations such as Spotify, IKEA, and H&M, I gained valuable insight into global business, creativity, leadership, and innovation. One of the highlights was meeting a Senior Vice President of Sustainability at H&M, which gave me a unique perspective on the importance of sustainability in today's corporate world. Beyond the professional development, the personal growth was just as meaningful. Living and working in another country challenged me to become more independent, adaptable, and confident. I learned how to navigate unfamiliar environments, build relationships with people from different backgrounds, and approach opportunities with an open mind. Looking back, Stockholm helped shape the person and professional I am becoming. It reinforced my desire to pursue an international career and showed me just how much can happen when you are willing to step outside your comfort zone. I am incredibly grateful to Absolute Internship for making this experience possible. I would recommend the program to any student who wants more than just an internship on their resume. If you want professional development, cultural immersion, lifelong connections, and memories that will stay with you long after the program ends, Absolute Internship is an experience worth pursuing. Sometimes the greatest investment you can make is in yourself, and Stockholm was exactly that for me.

An Unforgettable Summer of Growth and New Experiences in Barcelona

November 05, 2026by: Willa Jensen - United States

Program: Intern in Barcelona with Absolute Internship

5

Spending eight weeks in Barcelona, Spain, was one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my college career. I had always wanted to study or work abroad, and getting the opportunity to live in a new country while gaining professional experience was something I was really excited about. During my time in Barcelona, I interned with Lenium, a company focused on engineering, renewable energy, and sustainable development. I was able to gain hands-on experience working in an international professional environment, contribute to real projects, and learn more about how businesses operate in different parts of the world. As an Environmental Design major, it was especially interesting to see how sustainability and innovation are approached from a global perspective. Outside of my internship, I loved getting to explore Barcelona, experience the culture, travel to new places, and meet people from all over the world. Living in a city with such unique architecture, public spaces, and transportation systems was especially exciting because of my interest in urban design. Some of my favorite memories were simply walking around the city, trying new foods, spending time with friends, and experiencing everyday life in Spain. This experience also pushed me to become more independent, adaptable, and confident in unfamiliar situations. Being away from home for two months definitely came with challenges, but those moments helped me grow the most. I also appreciated the opportunity to practice my Spanish and experience a different culture beyond just being a tourist. Overall, I am incredibly grateful for my time in Barcelona. I came home with new friendships, professional skills, unforgettable memories, and a broader perspective on the world. I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone considering going abroad, especially those who want to step outside their comfort zone while gaining valuable work experience.

Growing into a professional life, virtually

November 05, 2026by: Samira Ismail - Sudan

Program: Global Remote Internships (Available for High Schoolers)

5

In Autumn of 2020 and I had just graduated from my Bachelors program in Mechanical engineering. At the time, due to the Pandemic, my chances of finding a career felt bleek at best. I was fresh out of university with no prior experience but a brief internship at a medical city, when came across Absolute internship's remote intership program offer. I was skeptical at first, coming from a very hands on Mechanical Engineering background, doing an internship online didn't make much sense to me. What would I do? How would I work or learn. After alot of help and support form the absolute internship team I was paired with a UK based start up. I loved my time at the company and learned so much about simulations and drawings and engineering than I ever could have imagined would be possible virtually. I was based in the middle east at the time but the whole company was remote and I had felt as if I gained a professional family. The company inspired me to pursue a Masters degree in Germany and 6 years later I'm still a part of the team. A team that continues to push my professional career and and allow me to learn and grow. The experience showed me that the things we are skeptical of the most, can have the outcomes that change the course of our lives. Non of this would have been possible if not for Absolute Internship, they alowed me to connect with the world that would have otherwise been far beyond my reach.

Working in Kosovo was such an amazing experience that set me up for success in so many ways. I got to meet so many other passionate change makers from across the world and interact directly with new culture. With Kosovo being such a new nation and so many arising issues, my work actually felt meaningful. It felt like I was helping shape Kosovo despite the short time I was there. It was also so cheap and easy to travel to other Balkan countries, so it was a great opportunity to travel to other parts of the world I've never experienced and might not easily experience again. Isla was such a great support the whole time. They found us housing, they helped us take advantage of opportunities, they supported our mental health, they connected us with community-centered groups, and they helped us get groceries.

Program: Global Development Internships in Kosovo

5

The most rewarding part of my summer in Kosovo has been the work I’ve done through my internship. This study abroad program stands out at USC as one of the few that offers students in Global Studies and related fields the opportunity to gain real-world experience through an internship. That aspect was a major reason why I was drawn to the program. In this blog, I’ll share about Isla, how I got my internship, what my responsibilities have been this summer, and highlight a few experiences from other Isla interns as well! Isla, USC’s partner organization in Kosovo, helps students from around the world find internships aligned with their academic and professional interests. Through its network of local partner organizations, Isla connects students with organizations that have openings in sectors such as Global Health, Business, Education and more. With the amount of partnerships they have, they truly can find internship positions for students in any field of interest. In my case, I reached out to Isla’s Executive Director, Leila Ali, to express my interest in an internship after securing my place in the Peacebuilding in Kosovo study-abroad program with a USC professor. She provided me with a list of available positions in my field of interest: Democracy and Governance. From there, I scheduled interviews with the organizations that most interested me and began the internship placement process. After receiving a few offers, I was able to choose the position that best suited my goals and Isla then facilitated the next steps by sending me the necessary work contracts. Isla handled all of the daunting logistics for me, like securing housing, arranging airport pickup, and organizing weekend trips. This aspect of studying abroad was what I found most stressful, as navigating these details in a new country with a language barrier seemed very overwhelming. Leila and our Program Coordinator, Dijana, made the entire process so great. They were there for us at any time of day, even checking in with us at 5AM during a weekend trip to make sure we made our bus. Their assistance was so reassuring, both for me and for my family, who appreciated knowing I had such a reliable support system abroad. With their help, I didn’t need to worry about all these details and could just enjoy my time living and working in Kosovo! This summer, I am an intern at an NGO focused on transitional justice and human rights. My work has involved conducting research on strategies to bridge community-based initiatives with formal policy enactment through methods like policy hackathons and the development of grassroots networks. I have also supported the organization’s information management systems by helping create logical frameworks and compile data sets to facilitate reporting to the European Union. As a result, I’ve learned a lot about EU-related processes and documentation. My favorite part of this internship is how much I’ve grown personally and professionally. Technology has always been outside of my comfort zone (my friends call me a grandma when it comes to anything with computers), but I’ve worked hard to overcome my ineptitude. As a result, I’ve gained valuable skills and greater confidence in my ability to adapt to new situations.

What started off as a desire for change turned out to be the most unforgettable time of my life. I sent in an application expecting the usual response delays I had experienced through the many intern abroad programs I had combed through but was happily surprised when Nicole was patient and kind, communicating often how available she was be it through video calls or email to sooth my anxieties. She helped me sort through my options and even when I had settled on an internship in Scotland, she kept searching and found me one most suitable for me: London. I sound like a broken record but it was truly life-changing. I had support throughout; Nicole with her check-ins to make sure I was settling in, my manager Ammu who was my rock and the best boss I have had the pleasure of working with and interns from another program who made my experience what it was. Walking to my train every morning felt purposeful and fun: I felt like a mini adult carving out a life for myself in this big city. I was excited to pop into my local Tesco and learn more about my roommates who invited me out every weekend; from window-shopping in the streets of Westminster to intimate dinners in a Fitzrovia neighborhood. At work, I was challenged! I learned how to interview, I was given responsibility over the intern team (again, the best people) and there wasn't a moment I felt afraid to be inquisitive or express my insecurities about the job. Every week was a new adventure and a new way to grow. I remember our manager had an idea for a viral tiktok and all 8 interns stood outside the work building searching for incoming buses, lingering close to where they'd park with a straight face, then burst into fits of laughter because of how unpredictable our work was! The train rides were honestly one of my highlights. The place I moved into after a month in London was 5 minutes from Canary Wharf so a quick 9 minute walk from my apartment to the train station looked like putting my headphones on while I admired the scenic waters of Canning Town before starting the day. London has an awesome transportation system so if you missed one train, best believe another one was coming a minute or two later (5 at most!). I travelled to Nottingham on the weekend and had a blast, and was surrounded by a great group of people. My landlord was the nicest and so was my housemate from both of my living situations, I had a wonderful time getting to know full-time staff through a get-together my manager organized and to this day, most of those people I am still in contact with. Shoutout Tina, Alicia, Stuart, Kate, Krystal, Nicholas, Catherine, Gayathri, Kamini, Shelby, Claire and Nate! Another to Nicole, Ammu, Ben, John and Georgeena for their continued support. I was lucky in that the issues I faced weren't program related, but I'll admit a travel kit of sites to see would have been nice! I was given housing recommendations as well though a person of support to regularly communicate with on residence issues I faced would be of great help as well. If the thought of study/intern abroad even occurs, run with it. The job experience was invaluable, the beautiful cultures I interacted with - from India to USA - have stayed with me and the memories linger in the "I miss you" messages shared amongst the intern group. Living away from home can be daunting, but you won't regret it for a second. I miss it and appreciate the opportunity beyond comprehension.

Shelby, Claire, Stuart and I. The OG intern team (missing: Nate)What a learning experience. So fun and enriching.Trains were a hoot for me!
