How to Intern Abroad in Development
Overview
Prepare for Development Internships Abroad
Understand the benefits
More than a résumé booster, a development internship abroad is a transformative experience that broadens your worldview and empowers you to create positive change. Here’s what you’ll gain from joining this impactful field:
- Global perspective. Step into communities facing real-world challenges and learn how development efforts tackle inequality, education, and sustainability on a global scale.
- Career growth. Gain hands-on international experience in a high-impact field that employers love to see.
- Cultural immersion: Experience life far beyond the classroom by living and working within diverse communities.
- Network building. Meet mentors, NGOs, and professionals dedicated to making a difference.
Things to know
Development internships abroad are rewarding but have unique challenges and learning opportunities. Here’s what to expect as you prepare for the journey:
- Living conditions. Many internships occur in resource-limited rural areas. Embrace simplicity as part of the authentic, immersive experience.
- Cultural sensitivity. You’ll encounter customs, beliefs, and daily routines different from your own. Cultural humility is key to impactful collaboration.
- Duration and workload. Internships last from a few weeks to over six months. Expect flexible schedules, hands-on tasks, and occasional challenges, all building your adaptability and skills in teamwork.
- Lasting impact: The relationships and lessons from your internship influence your career, worldview, and purpose long after it ends.

The expereicne was made fun and relaxed with fantastic coordinators that cared about the work they were doing with us and who seemed to genuinely want the best for us as both representatives of Absolute Internships and as peers. I made some wonderful memories with both my fellow interns and my host ccompany, and I will forever be grateful to Absolute Internships for fascilitating the making of them.
Surprises in Spain
August 18, 2026by: Enid Benitez Jimenez - United StatesMy time in Spain was surprising, to say the least. When I first got to my company, there were only two people on site. This was mainly because of the difference in starting times depending on the employee. My coworkers were very culturally diverse. Some coming from the Netherlands, some from various parts of Latin America, and a Filipina woman who was raised in Spain. All very lovely people. But the work culture surprised me as it was very lax and the coworkers were very kind. I was able to make friends with my absolute peers and go out around the city exploring the culture and practicing our Spanish. Barcelona was beautiful but surprising in the way of how the pride the people feel for their home reminds me of Puerto Rico.

Reeeeally precious experience of my life
August 18, 2026by: Mengqi Jin - ChinaI had a great experience during my internship in Japan this summer. I got to work in an international office, meet people from different backgrounds, and experience working in Tokyo. During the internship, I worked on financial products, Excel workbooks, research, and legal documents. Everyone in the office was really friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. Overall, I learned a lot, became more comfortable working in both English and Japanese, and really enjoyed my time there. I’m very glad I had this opportunity!
Amazing experience!
August 18, 2026by: Sophia Sachedina - United StatesI had an amazing experience with Absolute Internship! From the beginning, the program made the process of interning abroad feel organized and supported, which allowed me to really focus on making the most of my time in Barcelona. Through Absolute Internship, I was placed with Atlex Legal, where I gained hands-on experience in immigration law, worked directly with clients, participated in client calls, and contributed to meaningful projects, including developing an immigrant integration business plan. The internship gave me responsibilities that challenged me professionally and helped me become more confident, independent, and comfortable working in an international environment. What I appreciated most was that the experience went far beyond simply having an internship abroad. I was able to experience living and working in Barcelona, meet people from different backgrounds, and grow both personally and professionally. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity and would highly recommend Absolute Internship to students who want international work experience while also stepping outside of their comfort zone and experiencing life in a new country.
An unforgettable experience
August 17, 2026by: Oliver Johns - United KingdomProgram: Amazon Rainforest Conservation & Agroecology Internship
I cannot recommend this internship highly enough. The host family I stayed with was so welcoming and really made me feel part of the family. Everyone in the community was so knowledgeable and open to teach me as much as possible, from local wildlife to the workings of their Chakras (permacultures). It really opened my eyes to new possibilities for sustainable agriculture, ethical tourism and safeguarding of biodiversity and local culture/knowledge. All the planned days were a lot of fun, from white water rafting to seeing an apiary with stingless bees and vanilla production. Tena is also one of the most special places I have been to, with great food, a fun nightlife, all while being in the Amazon rainforest, with Cafe Tortuga an amazing hub to get to know a vast array of amazing people. Really, this is an experience which is eye-opening, rewarding, and filled with unforgettable experiences.
Change your life, network, and perspective
August 15, 2026by: Victoria Gacutan - United StatesProgram: International Internships in Dublin
I will always be an advocate to intern or study abroad. No matter where you choose to go, you will leave with your life changed. The Intern Group is a reputable, reliable choice. Dublin is a great city to explore and work in, especially if you like more mid-size and communal cities. What you put into the program is what you get out, so explore and experience all you can. There’s a lot to do in Dublin, as you have both of best worlds, being by the city and sea. As an avid ocean lover, I was able to be in the ocean, but also get my city girl on which I loved. Adam and Laura were our ECs here in Dublin. They were great in coordinating social plans while getting accustomed to Dublin and if we had any questions, they were very supportive.
A Program That Truly Delivers!
August 15, 2026by: Megan Hoang - United StatesProgram: International Internships in Dublin
This internship abroad is the kind of experience that changes how you see yourself. Away from the usual routines and support systems back home, you’re forced to figure things out on your own, and that’s where the real growth happens. Navigating a new place, solving problems solo, building a routine from scratch: it teaches you more about independence than any classroom ever could. The program also gives you room to actually test out a career path instead of just guessing at it. You get to try the work firsthand and see what genuinely clicks. What stands out most is the community and the events. Everyone’s going through the same adjustment, which creates a natural closeness. People get it, and they show up for each other, which makes the hard parts a lot easier to handle. Overall, a genuinely worthwhile experience. Highly recommend.
Thinking outside the box
August 15, 2026by: Giorgia Salgarelli - ItalyProgram: International Internships in Dublin
This experience gave me so much. During my internship, I learned to see things from different perspectives and to try new things without fear also because the people I worked with were very kind, helpful and supportive. I'm very grateful for everything and experiences like this are very important because if you think that you have an open mind like this one helps to think outside the box and learn how to solve problems and new challenges without fear!
Its time to get out of my bubble
August 14, 2026by: Adya J - IndiaLondon was the most unrealistic experience for me! The work-life balance culture, dressing, food, lifestyle, people everything seemed like a fantasy. These 2 months are something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Never did I think I would get to meet such great people, eat all this food, and party as I've never done before! The experience coordinators were the absolute best. They ensured we had a great time, did not make us feel like we were away from home, and most importantly, they were our friends! We talked, ate, and went out together like we've known each other since forever. Honestly, I wasn't sure about this entire experience, but once I got here, oh boy, I would give my heart and soul for this to just be my reality. My opinion, be unsure, dream unrealistically, spend that money, overthink it, but take that step and go for it, because what's the worst that could happen?

My first experience abroad!

I had one of the best time of my life! The internship has helped me to grow both personally and professionally and I will be forever grateful to The Intern Group for the opportunity given. Not only the work environment was fantastic, but also the moments spent with my flatmates made a difference in this experience
Best summer yet
August 13, 2026by: Kimson Wu - United StatesProgram: Internships in Hong Kong, China
Before going to Hong Kong, i thought all I was going to experience is the internship itself and nothing else. Until I realized the intern group provided other memorable experiences for us. I met a LOT of new people and got to know more about them and how we all ended up in Hong Kong. What an experience
The greatest two months of my life
August 12, 2026by: Campbell Adams - United StatesThe program itself was amazing. I had a great placement. Work life is very fun and chill, but also enough work where I was learning a great amount. The program has a ton of opportunities to get together and do cool trips, but it also gives you the free freedom to travel. The two coordinators were awesome. Honestly made us feel so comfortable being in Barcelona.
Best trip I've ever had
August 12, 2026by: Rohit Vyas - United StatesMy experience abroad was something I will always be grateful for. The internship gave me valuable professional experience and allowed me to learn what it is like to work in a different country and culture. I was able to gain hands-on experience in both warehouse and office environments, which helped me better understand logistics and supply chain operations. One of my favorite parts of the program was the weekend trips around Portugal. Getting to explore different cities and places with the other students made the experience even more memorable. The people I met through the program were one of the biggest highlights, and many of them have become lifelong friends. Overall, this experience pushed me outside of my comfort zone, helped me become more independent, and gave me memories and relationships that I will carry with me long after the internship ended. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking for a mix of professional growth, travel, and an opportunity to meet great people.

Amazing experience
August 12, 2026by: Collin Cribben - United StatesI couldn’t have asked for a better program to join. Everyone was so amazing and our program leaders were the absolute best and the events were extremely fun. I was placed in the best internship I could have asked for.
Great Support
August 11, 2026by: Eli Morcos - United StatesLiving and working on the other side of the world in a completely different culture is not the easiest thing in the world. Beyond Academy made this transition as smooth as possible, and made sure that I was safe and accounted for frequently throughout my two months there.

10/10 Experience
August 11, 2026by: Britton Born - United StatesBerlin is an amazing city. The Base, where we lived, was very comfortable. Beyond was great at having activities and initiating meet ups with the other interns. I loved the atmosphere of Berlin. I felt that it had a very gritty, artistic vibe to it which I really enjoyed.
Absolute Internship Experience
August 10, 2026by: Brianna McAlary - United StatesI had an amazing time doing the 8-week program with Absolute Internship. A Valuable and Eye-Opening Internship Experience
August 10, 2026by: Delfin Aksu - TurkeyMy internship with The Intern Group was a very valuable experience for me, both personally and professionally. As this was my first experience working in the industry, I wasn’t completely sure what to expect, but I was able to adapt to the working environment much more easily than I thought. One of the most valuable parts of this experience was that it made me think more seriously about the career path I would like to follow in the future. There are so many different areas and opportunities within computer science and technology, and having the chance to gain real work experience helped me better understand what kind of work I enjoy, what I am good at, and what might suit me best in the future. I also had the opportunity to meet new people, experience a different working environment, and learn many things outside of my university studies. I am especially grateful to my workplace mentors, who were incredibly patient, supportive, and welcoming throughout my internship. They always took the time to help me whenever I had questions or was unsure about something. Everything was explained to me in great detail, and I was guided through unfamiliar tasks in a way that helped me genuinely understand what I was doing. Having such supportive mentors made it much easier for me to learn, build my confidence, and feel comfortable in my first professional working environment. I also really appreciated all the events and activities organised by The Intern Group. I genuinely enjoyed every event I attended, and they made the whole experience even more memorable and enjoyable. They were also a great opportunity to meet and spend time with people from different backgrounds and make new connections. I am very thankful to The Intern Group team for organising them and for always being so supportive throughout my time here. Overall, I am very grateful for this experience and for everyone who contributed to it. I feel like I am leaving with a clearer idea of my future career, new experiences, new connections, and great memories. Thank you to everyone who made this experience so positive!
