How to Intern Internationally
Overview
How to get an internship abroad
If you want to know how to get an international internship, it’s actually quite similar to finding a study abroad program. Start by asking yourself two key questions:
- What are your career goals? Finding internships abroad largely depends on narrowing down your career goals. Once you know what it is that you want to do or which skills you want to improve, you’ll be that much closer to finding the right internship abroad for you.
- Do you need college credit? - Are you a college student seeking credit towards your degree, or are you a post grad or even mid-career professional? If you don’t require college credit for your international internship, it will actually greatly widen your options, since some university degree programs can be strict about what they accept for credit. If you don’t need college credit, your program options are basically limitless—meaning your dream internship is practically guaranteed. Intern abroad organizations have connections all over the world, so if you’re willing to pay the program fee, you’ll get unrivaled experience to add to your resume or CV.
Locations
Where to find an international internship
If you’re looking for internships overseas rather than in your home city or country, then we can guess you have an affinity for travel. If you have a specific type of internship abroad in mind, it might make the destination obvious. However, if you simply want professional experience in a certain destination in order to perfect your language skills or learn the cultural norms, then you should let that guide your program search.
If you're trying to improve your Spanish skills, then choosing Spain, Mexico, or Peru could be good places to start with. But if you want to immerse yourself in Japanese culture then you're going to have to go to Japan.
International internships exist everywhere in the world! But if you want to know where to start looking, start with where you want to go. It can also be helpful to either look for international internships at your companies of interest, or to ask your program advisor where the best internships in your career field are located. When looking for the best places to intern abroad, it helps to think about your career goals first.
If you want to explore the business world, then places like France, China, and Italy could be a great start. But if you're more interested in wildlife or conservation, then you'll want to consider destinations like Costa Rica, South Africa, or Thailand.
Finances
How to afford an internship
How will you pay for an internship abroad? Interning abroad through a program can be pricey, but worth it. Your internship provider will find you a killer placement in your chosen field, while taking care of details like accommodation and meals. Some even offer post-internship job finding assistance! All of these benefits come at a price, but it pays off (sometimes literally). Plus, it’s not impossible to find a paid internship abroad (although you’ll have to do a bit more digging).
Many students and young professionals opt to fundraise for their international internships, but scholarships and grants for interning abroad also exist!

Frequently Asked Questions
How to find internships abroad
If you’re looking for an internship abroad, a common misconception is that you need to find and apply for specific opportunities, as you would normally do with jobs.
However, there are actually thousands of opportunities to custom-build a guaranteed internship abroad. These opportunities operate similarly to study abroad, but are instead focused specifically on professional growth and experience. Our internships abroad directory is a great place to start your search. This is an excellent resource if you want to search by destination, career field, or timeframe.
Are there paid internships abroad?
Yes, there are definitely paid internships abroad. However, it will be far more common to find unpaid internships. Depending on your field and destination, paid internship opportunities are few and far between and tend to be a lot more competitive.
If you want to intern abroad but can only find unpaid internships, then you’ll need to find the additional value in the experience. Will you be able to network with important professionals in your industry? Will you receive help with writing your resume and cover letter? Will you get a letter of recommendation or two? Early in your career, these types of benefits can change the trajectory of your career.
Are internships abroad useful?
Internships abroad are highly useful! This is true no matter what your academic or career field is, but especially so if you plan to live or work abroad someday, or really want a way to make your resume more competitive. Interning abroad is an excellent way to get work experience while availing all the other benefits offered by studying abroad.
What are some benefits of internships abroad?
There are many benefits of interning abroad—namely, the exceptional personal and professional growth that comes hand-in-hand with the experience. Plus, internships abroad are flexible. You can intern abroad during college, after graduation, or if you’re interested in a career change, and there are thousands of opportunities across dozens of fields.
And not to mention, you’ll have life-changing adventures and make tons of new friends and connections!
What are the best intern abroad programs like?
With thousands of opportunities around the world, how do you find the best of the best when it comes to internships abroad? It’s actually pretty simple—it all comes down to what your goals are and what you want out of an internship abroad!
A few things your internship should absolutely have are pre-departure support, resume writing help, help with your job search post-internship, and alumni networking. And if the entire premise of your internship is a custom placement, you should expect them to deliver on your initial wants and requests.

My Business Development Internship in Lisbon, Portugal with Absolute Internship
September 02, 2026by: Kayla Jaco - United StatesMy business development internship in Lisbon, Portugal, with Absolute Internship was an incredible experience that let me apply everything I'd learned in university to real business settings, from client outreach to strategy discussions. Beyond the professional growth, I fell in love with exploring Lisbon and traveling to other parts of Portugal, all alongside the amazing friends I made through the program. Absolute Internship did a great job balancing meaningful work experience with the chance to genuinely live and explore a new country. I came back with more confidence, real work experience, and friendships I'll carry with me long after the program ended. I'd highly recommend this program to anyone considering an internship abroad.
Exactly What I Needed for My Final-Year Elective
September 02, 2026by: Jordan Fraser - United StatesI was looking for a program that would help me complete my elective requirement while also giving me real clinical experience. During the program, I spent time in surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, emergency care, and cardiology. I saw cases involving trauma, normal deliveries, post-op care, and a variety of other conditions that I would not normally be exposed to during my training back home. That made the experience much more valuable for me. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a clinical elective with a lot of variety and opportunities to learn.

Amber
September 02, 2026by: Ambrine * - FranceProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I am Amber, french student in international trade and I had a two-months internship at Korea GapYear. Thank you very much to Korea GapYear and to all the staff for allowing me to do my internship in Seoul as I really wanted to. They have been very nice and warm to me since the very first day and helped me integrate into korean life. They have been really understanding and allowed me to gain experience, knowledge and try new things during my internship. Thank you particularly to Olivia who was my tutor during this internship and who helped me not only with my work but with the preparation of my stay in Seoul and my integration into korean culture. They've been really open-minded as I came while I was fasting and that made me feel even more comfortable working with them. What was your funniest moment? Filming a video for applicants going to France (because I am myself) and having to scream to test the mic before each take.
3 month internship in Seoul
September 02, 2026by: Mary * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I had such a great time with my environmental internship in Seoul! Korea GapYear really makes sure to match up your internship with not only an internship relating to your job perspectives, but also takes into account the personality and culture of the workplace. At first I was nervous because I have heard a lot about how strict the rules are in Korean offices, but luckily my company was so open and welcoming, and not only the workers, but the CEO speak comfortably and in a friendly manner, so I was excited to show up to the office everyday. Overall, if you are looking for an internship provider, KGY does a great job at finding a fitting one for you!

Once in a Lifetime Experience
September 02, 2026by: Ryan Hesch - United StatesProgram: Amazon Rainforest Conservation & Agroecology Internship
Beyond Travels allowed me to feel comfortable and confident while taking part in a fun, exciting, and powerful cultural immersion experience. I spent my days in the Amazon living and working with farmers tending to their sustainable agroforestry systems. I learned about the ecology of the region, their successful regenerative practices, and also their struggles. I made lasting connections with my host family, as well as other community members and interns I met during my time in Ecuador. Beyond Travels connected me with other communities working on similar projects in regenerative agriculture and tourism, giving me a broader view of what it's like to be a farmer in the Amazon. I also got to take part in unforgettable activities like rafting, hiking, and swimming in my free time, while also exploring the local shops and restaurants along the way. Beyond Travels allowed me to have an unforgettable experience while keeping me in constant connection with multiple guides and mentors so I always felt safe and comfortable. Thanks to them I made so many great connections with the community and I feel like I have a second home in the Amazon!
Seeing Psychology in a New Culture
September 02, 2026by: Reece Schonefeld - AustraliaProgram: Psychology & Social Work Internship
Hi, my name is Reece, I am from the University of Newcastle, Australia. I am in my second year of studying Psychology and I chose to study abroad because I really wanted to see what it was like studying in a different culture and also for some personal and professional experience. I really enjoyed studying here with Cerca Abroad in the Iasis Centre, because it has given me such a good example of group therapy and it’s given me motivation to work in group therapy one day.

Veterinary Medicine and Stray Animal Care
September 02, 2026by: Sophie Black - United StatesProgram: Medical Shadowing in Greece
Hi, my name is Sophie, I am from Washington, U.S., and I go to Washington State University. I chose to do this internship because I wanted to have a hands-on experience in the area of medicine and I just wanted to see how it works in another country. I got to see some really cool surgeries and I also saw some interesting work with stray animals. I am very happy with the coordination of this internship by Cerca Abroad, they would always answer questions, there was always someone to answer them, there was a lot of support. I really enjoyed my stay in Thessaloniki, it was really fun to see some very cool restaurants and also go to the beaches and there were things to see outside.

A great experience!
September 02, 2026by: Violette de Sausmarez - FranceProgram: International Internships in Madrid
Everyone from The Intern Group was super helpful and easy to contact! Easy to meet other interns due to events and a welcome meet-up at the start. Really nice accommodation and good location with easy public transport to the city centre. Clear check-in / check-out process. The internship was a great learning experience, everyone from the company was really welcoming and willing to help me out. I always had something to do and was given clear instructions for tasks. Would recommend to anyone looking for more experience!
I had the most incredible experience!

My Absolute Internship Experience in Stockholm
September 01, 2026by: Matilde Fanti - ItalySpending two months in Stockholm with Absolute Internship turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made for my career. What stood out immediately was how carefully the placement team listened to what I actually wanted — not just any internship, but one that genuinely matched my skills and goals. And they delivered: the company I ended up working with was the perfect fit, giving me real responsibilities and hands-on experience from day one. I owe a huge thank you to my coordinators, Moa, Anna, and Kofi. Whatever I needed, whenever I needed it, they were there quick to respond, genuinely invested in making sure things went smoothly, and always willing to go the extra mile. That kind of support made settling into a new city and a new job so much less stressful than I expected. Beyond the work itself, Stockholm as a city gave me so much: a new culture, a new way of life, and a chance to build friendships with interns from completely different backgrounds through the events and activities the program put together. Looking back, this internship didn't just add a line to my resume — it gave me real skills, real confidence, and a real taste of what working internationally feels like. If you're considering doing something similar, I highly recommend Absolute Internship and an international experience like mine.
Knowing Swedish Culture
September 01, 2026by: Michele Lombardi - ItalyMy two-month experience with Absolute Internship in Stockholm was truly transformative. From the very beginning, the placement team took the time to understand my background and career goals, matching me with a company where I could gain meaningful, hands-on professional experience rather than just routine tasks. Living and working in Stockholm was an incredible opportunity. The on-site support was excellent, ensuring a smooth transition into both the workplace and daily life in Sweden. Beyond the internship itself, the program organized great networking events and cultural activities that allowed me to connect with fellow interns from all over the world. This experience significantly boosted my resume, helped me develop key industry skills, and gave me firsthand insight into an international work culture. I highly recommend Absolute Internship to any student or young professional looking to accelerate their career abroad.
Entertainment Internship
September 01, 2026by: Lauren * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
Definitely recommend this program to other people! kgy is so kind and full of commiment kgy offers like a lot of choices to choose from like for me when I applied like there was like an education teaching aspect, a business aspect, a non-profit organization aspect, so literally anyone wants to come to Korea for an internship definitely recommend to go through kgy You guys are the best! Usually in the U.S people are very independent they like to do things on their own, but here in Korea like everyone especially at work, everyone works together as a team like they're so cooperative. At my company other people help me like working as a team I really like that a lot and everyone has an equal role like knowing how to work in a team! This internship has been like a hundred percent good match for me I don't think I would have been able to find something like this without kgy’s help! Thank you

My experience as IT intern at KGY
September 01, 2026by: Alex * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
My internship is going great! I am currently doing an IT internship in Seoul. Time does fly fast. I can’t believe my internship is already coming to an end but I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot of new things and I feel like my Korean language skills as well as my understanding of Korean culture have both significantly improved. Outside of my internship, I have really been enjoying my stay here in Korea. It has been a blast so far. Thank you so much Korea gap year for everything. I appreciate the time that I have spent in Korea.

What an experience!
September 01, 2026by: Lenin Pusparaj - BelgiumProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
Finding an Internship in Korea can be easier with KoreaGapYear, especially as a student having a lot on my plate already. KoreaGapYear was recommended to me by one of my university's classmate students. And that's how my journey with KoreaGapYear began. I worked as a Digital Marketing Intern at KoreaGapYear, where I witnessed the team's ardent efforts to support individuals in achieving their aspirations and goals by offering Internships, Gap Years, Exchange Programs, and Language Programmes. KoreaGapYear is a great idea!
Best Choice for Korea
September 01, 2026by: Ryan * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
My stay in Korea was amazing because of Korea Gap Year. From the first email, the entire staff at Korea Gap Year truly cares about providing you with the best experience possible. I had the privilege of having Bella coordinate my internship/Korean journey and she was fantastic in every way. The internship application process is more thorough than in similar programs meaning, your specific interests and needs are taken into consideration throughout the entire application process (I worked with other programs which were far more vague). In addition, after you are placed in an internship you get to select your housing from several options provided by Korea Gap Year. My housing location was great since it was very close to the subway and plenty of stores/restaurants. While in Korea Bella and Olivia would consistently check in on me and answer any questions I had regarding Korean living. Of course, my internship (in marketing) was perfect and exactly what I was looking for. My host company's staff were all very friendly even taking me out on several social activities. I cannot recommend Korea Gap Year enough and would suggest anyone still deciding to at least interview with them and I promise you will not be disappointed!
4 months was not long enough!!
September 01, 2026by: A.T. Willis - United StatesI absolutely loved my time in Florence, Italy through WorldStrides this past spring. I had a ton of support leading up to my arrival in Florence, and once I got there, the staff quickly welcomed me and made it feel like home. My only regret is doing the 15-week program and not the 18-week program! There is so much to do and see within Florence and all over Italy, let alone the rest of Europe! I didn't grasp how easy it was to travel by train and plane until I got there. My time in Florence taught me how to put myself out there and try every new thing that came my way, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

I truly enjoyed my internship and am very thankful for the opportunity.
September 01, 2026by: Phoebe Voumard - United StatesProgram: Internships in Madrid, Spain
I had a wonderful time during my internship and greatly enjoyed the experience. I made significant improvements in my Spanish speaking abilities, and I am very grateful for the opportunity. I truly enjoyed my internship and am very thankful for the opportunity.
Life-Changing experience
September 01, 2026by: Isaias Rodriguez - United StatesPersonally, it helped me in being a more independent individual. It also helped me be more adaptive to a new environment. Professionally it helped me as a stronger asset in the work-force and working in a new country gave me tons of interpersonal skills.
