Overview
Prepare for an Internship
Set goals
Figuring out what you want to do is one thing, but doing so in the USA can be an even bigger task! After narrowing down your field, here are a few questions to consider when considering goals:
- Set clear and ambitious goals for yourself. Are there any professional (or personal) achievements you’d like to make while interning?
- Learn valuable personal and professional skills that build growth. Acquiring these skills will not only enhance my resume but also prepare me for future challenges.
- Connect with people personally and professionally while learning about the world and yourself. Building these relationships can open new opportunities and foster personal growth.
Understand the benefits
Regardless of what you know of the States, it’s undeniable that there’s much to experience there!
- Accommodation assistance is typical. Employers will help or have accommodations that generally meet all the Western standards.
- Lots to do and see. The USA offers everything from historical and cultural sites to sports communities to a colorful social nightlife. Looking for outdoor activities after work—the US has you covered!
- Vast food options. It’s no secret that the offerings are a bit mind-boggling, with options ranging from staple regional specialties to incredible indigenous fairs to the wild fusion-inspired options that have become American.
Things to know
You might be wondering what you should look into as you plan to intern in the US. Here are the top things you have to work on:
- Basics. Most internships need good English skills and are aimed at students or young professionals. You’ll likely need health insurance, so look into that early. Show initiative and commitment—it’s key to success in many work cultures.
- Cost of living. Costs vary by location, so know what your program covers and plan a budget to manage your spending.
- Visas. Check visa requirements early since most internships need one. Stay connected with your embassy for help and resources.
Locations
Choose a Location
Choosing a place to intern in the US can be a big task! If your field allows it, consider your budget, preferred climate, or activities you’re interested in.
Washington D.C.
The national capital is where all the political magic happens. You can also see the inner workings of the United States government by visiting Capitol Hill. There are plenty of cultural opportunities on the National Mall alone.
New York City
NYC, aka The Big Apple, needs no introduction. Everything is at your fingertips here, and public transit is just the start. There are plenty of internships to choose from, from the arts to ecology to marketing, to name a few.
Chicago
Unlike NYC or LA, Chicago is found in the middle of the country in Illinois. Between its multiple sports legacies, arts scene, and downtown itself, it’s a city with plenty of opportunities. It’s walkable and has reliable public transit.
Fields
Choose a Field
There are lots of internships available in the United States. Here are a few highlights, but there are hundreds of opportunities across dozens of fields.
Business, Marketing, and Finance
English is the language of global business, so gaining experience in the field in the United States can set you apart from the crowd. Marketing and advertising firms across the US house some of the most classic campaigns that are still referenced today.
Hospitality and Tourism
Many internships in the US are available in the hospitality industry, and positions will be in hotels and resorts. It’s a great way to work those customer service skills, travel, and meet lots of people.
Media and the Arts
Media, film, television production, and even theatre internships are popular in the United States. With the media powerhouse of New York on one coast and the most famous film production city in the world, Hollywood, it’s a no-brainer.

3. Choose how long to stay
When planning your internship abroad, it's important to decide how long you want to stay. Here are some options to consider based on your availability and goals:
- Short term. Great for those who are interested in exploring a program abroad or have a brief break available from school or work.
- 3-6 months. Excellent for students, academics, or others who have a bit longer but don’t want an elongated stay abroad.
- Long term. For those who are looking for a year or more abroad. Great for a gap year, academics, or individuals looking for work experience.
4. Funding & scholarships
Scholarships and financial aid support of various kinds are abundant in the USA. GoAbroad can get you instant matches with financial offers. Just fill out our scholarship and deals application and check it out!
5. Apply

Popular Providers
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I get an internship in the US?
If you’re an international student looking for an internship in the US, you’ll first want to figure out if you need the F-1 student visa or J-1 exchange visa. In some cases (like the J-1 visa), you’ll also need a sponsor. Once you know which visa you’ll be applying for, it’ll be easier to get an internship, either by searching online or through your university.
How can I apply for internships in the USA?
After finding viable internship opportunities, you can either apply through a program provider or directly to the company you’re interested in interning at. You’ll need to present your resume/CV and (most likely) a cover letter, as well as proof of English language proficiency and visa eligibility.
Where can I find internships in the USA?
There are internship opportunities all across the USA! Depending on your field, some locations might be more relevant than others. For example, if you’re interning in technology or computer programming, Washington D.C., New York City, Chicago, and California are good places to start looking.
Are internships in the US paid?
If you’re a US citizen, it’ll be easier to find paid internship opportunities in the US. In certain cases, international students are also eligible for paid internships. There are stipulations that allow you to be paid on both the F-1 and J-1 visas, so be sure to ask your internship provider about this.
Which visa is required for internships in the USA?
To intern in the US, you’ll either need a F-1 student visa or J-1 exchange visa. The F-1 visa is for international students who intend to study full-time in the US (but allows up to 20 hours of work per week in approved settings), while the J-1 exchange visa is intended for cultural exchange participants.

Rewarding and Fulfilling Work Experience
August 25, 2026by: Clare Philp - United KingdomProgram: Virtual/Remote Global Internships Through The Intern Group
I had an lovely and efficient experience with the intern group, no matter who I interacted with they were kind and helpful, the whole experience was very rewarding and they are always available for any questions along the way! I was really unsure on how it would all go, but I was very impressed and I have nothing but positive things to say. From the start they made the process of finding an internship that would suit my needs so easy and every step of the way they are encouraging you. I absolutely loved my time with them and have zero regrets. I got matched with a company very quickly and I absolutely adored my experience and time with the company I got to work for. Even though it was remote I was still made to feel like I was part of the process and I throughly enjoyed experiencing being part of real work for real people. Even if you are a university student looking to gain experience one summer or a recent graduate there is no doubt in my mind you will gain something valuable from doing an internship with a company that aligns with your career goals.
The best experience ever!
August 24, 2026by: Stephanie Lin - United StatesMy experience in Thailand has been so fun! I got to see a lot of the major temples and sites that are a must visit. I made many friends with the other interns here. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating. They helped me with any questions I had or anything in general. Overall my experience was amazing, 10/10 would recommend to anyone on the fence about it! I would even come back if I could!

August 20, 2026by: Carlos Rosero - EcuadorProgram: J-1 Visa Sponsorship in USA for STEM Interns & Trainees
Thank you to the program; I was able to travel overseas for a good time, in the United States, where I met amazing people!. The culture overseas is very wide, as there is not only 1 culture; there are many. I worked with people from Mexico, Nicaragua, the United States, Africa, etc. I made good friends from whom I learnt more aspects of living in the United States, plus the different ideas conveyed in a way of living. Also, most of the things that I learned back in my school days, I'm glad that I can apply them to real-world scenarios in material science, management, etc. Sharing the same room with people whos carriers are +20 years of experience and learning from them at the company was the most exciting adventure, as you not only acquire new knowledge, but you are also able to provide new perspectives with what you have learned in the past, plus having a new framework on how to handle things. The whole experience was amazing to me.

What an amazing internship experience! It was an unforgettable month that pushed me out of my comfort zone, gave me experiences I’d never have at home, and allowed me to learn about conservation while meeting some amazing people. I learned a great deal and the entire experience definitely exceeded my expectations! I really enjoyed game drives. It was a good way to explore the reserve, learn lots about the environment and wildlife, get to know other participants and no drive was ever the same. Seeing all the animals, sunrise and sunsets on drives and getting to know new people made the experience truly unforgettable.

The time spent doing my GIS internship at the Gondwana Game Reserve exceeded my expectations in both the knowledge I received and the amazing views I was fortunate enough to see. I learned a great deal, saw a lot of amazing animals and it was extremely rewarding to learn so much about GIS and wildlife.
Good professional launchpad into the creative world
August 19, 2026by: Grace - United StatesProgram: ArtBound Initiative - Creative Internships in New York
Overall, I had a great experience. ABI was super on top of everything throughout the whole process - from the modules, to recruitment, through my actual internship; everyone was very communicative and responsive, which I appreciated. I got my first-choice internship type and location, working as a design intern at a boutique creative marketing agency in NYC. I enjoyed getting a look behind the curtain at all the different aspects of agency life. From a design standpoint, I learned a lot about the intersection between client management and conceptual creative thinking, but I also got to learn a bit about the account management and production side of the agency world too. Overall, the experience gave me a much stronger understanding of agency workflow and the competencies needed to excel in similar settings in the future.
I feel more prepared
August 19, 2026by: Tanasia LaBrew - United StatesProgram: ArtBound Initiative - Creative Internships in New York
After doing a six-month internship earned through ArtBound, I feel more prepared for the type of work in my industry. Before my start date, I did the ABI Academy, which helped build my interview skills, improve my resume, and helped me understand how the choices I made for my portfolio could affect the quality of opportunities I am offered. During the duration of my internship, I was in constant contact with the program coordinators, who were able to guide me during a period of time when I was having communication issues with my boss at Asia Contemporary Art Forum. My role was web/media designer and curatorial fellow; however, I wore many hats while doing my internship. I feel that I was able to truly learn how to work in a small team, how to take charge and make decisions, and improve my institutional style writing. Though I didn't get to participate in most of the intern gatherings during my internship program, I like that I will always have a community to engage with thanks to ArtBound, now that I am an ABI Alumni.

Learning with the experts!
August 14, 2026by: Carlos Rosero - EcuadorProgram: J-1 Visa Sponsorship in USA for STEM Interns & Trainees
Living outside your hometown can be scary sometimes as is not something that you do everyday, or maybe you haven't had the chance to leave your house or small town for longer than 1 week. This was a great experience and journey for me as i had the chance to apply what I have learn back on my school days plus learning more not only from my personal knowledge about industry, machinery, people. Nonthless, this wasnt the only fun part, I was able to meet and live into another work culture, changing schdules working on different areas, experience different traditions. I like to tell and hear stories, fortunately USA, is full of stories from past present and future, with different people, some of them got here for work, improving life and I think I like that vision of changing your scenario for a better one, in which you can learn about other and about yourself.
The best way to grow your skills beyond a textbook or classroom!
August 12, 2026by: Suskia TreleavenThe Marketing & Communications internship in Sydney gave me the real life experience which I can tie closely to my studies, and this has helped me understand different topics more easily. The internship also gave me the practical experience I needed to help boost my CV (resume) for my later career, and better prepare me for my future. I enjoyed meeting many people from different cultures a lot. My host family accommodation was amazing; I couldn’t have asked for better.

August 03, 2026by: Matea ShizuruProgram: Intern Abroad HQ - Affordable Internships From Just 2 weeks!
Karen and Kristal at Intern Abroad HQ were wonderful at assisting me and my study abroad counselor throughout the whole process (esp. with the academic credits). Thank you to them! What I enjoyed most about the Public Health internship in Cape Town was being able to work closely and connect with such qualified, educated, and passionate professionals in my field. Being exposed to the work that they do gave me a clearer idea of what I want to do in my own professional career and gave me insight into what it takes to get there. Furthermore, I enjoyed being mentored by my internship supervisor and being able to take charge of my own internship project.

If you need an internship, a new and unfamiliar setting to promote growth, or a new group of friends beyond academy is the place to put your trust in. We especially love hearing that your relationship with your host company was such a positive part of your experience. Thank you for trusting Beyond Academy with your summer in NYC and for recommending us to fellow students looking to build their resumes and experience something new. We’re so happy you made memories and connections that will stay with you long after your internship!
