What inspired you to travel abroad?
Firstly, I have always been passionate about exploring new cultures, meeting different people, and experiencing diverse perspectives. The opportunity to immerse myself in a different environment, such as New York, which is renowned for its vibrant arts and media scene, was incredibly enticing.
Secondly, I was eager to broaden my professional horizons and gain practical experience in a dynamic and competitive industry. New York, being a global hub for media and design, offered an unparalleled platform.
It was incredibly valuable for me to learn from industry professionals, expand my skill set, and build valuable connections there.
Additionally, the prospect of challenging myself and stepping out of my comfort zone was also a significant motivator. I saw interning in New York as an opportunity for personal growth to test my abilities in a fast-paced and culturally diverse environment.

I chose my specific program/organization because it offered the perfect combination of professional development, support, and networking opportunities that aligned with my career aspirations.
While studying audiovisual communications and creative areas at school, I learned about the program which made for an easier decision.

What was your favorite part about New York City?
My favorite part about being in New York City was the incredible energy and diversity that permeated every aspect of life there. From the bustling streets of Manhattan to the vibrant neighborhoods of Brooklyn, there was always something new and exciting to discover.
One aspect that stood out to me was the rich cultural tapestry of the city. New York is a melting pot of different cultures, languages, and traditions, and I loved exploring the various ethnic neighborhoods, trying diverse cuisines, and attending cultural events.
It was truly fascinating to see how people from all over the world coexist and contribute to the vibrant mosaic of New York City.
What made your experience abroad extraordinary?
Several factors made my experience abroad in New York extraordinary. Firstly, it was the opportunity to immerse myself in a completely different culture and environment.
Coming from Honduras, the bustling streets, diverse neighborhoods, and rich cultural offerings of New York City provided me with a unique and enriching experience that broadened my perspectives and challenged my preconceptions.
Secondly, the professional opportunities I encountered were exceptional. As an intern, I had the chance to work with talented professionals, collaborate on exciting projects, and gain hands-on experience in a competitive industry.
The fast-paced and dynamic nature of New York's media and design scene pushed me to grow and adapt, allowing me to develop new skills and refine existing ones.
How did the local program staff support you throughout your program?
The local staff organized monthly meetings to familiarize me with the program, the city, and the cultural nuances of living and working in New York. They provided information on practical matters such as transportation, housing, and safety, ensuring a smooth transition into my new environment.
Overall, the local staff played a pivotal role in making my program in New York a success. Their support, guidance, and expertise were instrumental in helping me navigate the challenges and opportunities of living and working abroad.
What's one thing you wish you would have done differently during your time abroad?
If there's one thing I wish I had done differently, it would be to push myself even further outside of my comfort zone. While I embraced many new experiences and challenges during my internship, I believe there were still opportunities for growth that I may have missed out on by not fully stepping out of my comfort zone.

Describe what a typical day in your life abroad looked like.
Wake up early to start the day. New York City is known for its hustle and bustle, so I like to get an early start to make the most of my time.
Commute to my internship location by subway and then spend the morning working on various design projects, collaborating with colleagues, and receiving feedback from supervisors.
Around 1 p.m. I take my break for lunch, exploring nearby eateries with coworkers. Finish up work for the day and head out to explore the city.
New York City offers endless possibilities, so I might visit a museum, check out an art gallery, stroll through Central Park, or meet up with friends for dinner at a local restaurant, trying out different cuisines from around the world.
What did you enjoy doing in your free time abroad?
During my free time abroad in New York City, I enjoyed exploring the city's diverse neighborhoods, cultural attractions, and culinary scene.
I loved wandering through iconic neighborhoods like Greenwich Village, SoHo, and Williamsburg, soaking in the eclectic atmosphere, browsing boutique shops, and admiring street art.
What type of accommodation did you have? What did you like best about it?
During my time in New York City, I chose to stay with the accommodation recommended by the Artbound Initiative, which was Roomrs.

What does meaningful travel mean to you?
Meaningful travel, to me, goes beyond simply visiting new places or checking off items on a bucket list. It involves engaging deeply with the places, cultures, and people one encounters along the journey and finding meaning and purpose in those interactions.
At its core, meaningful travel is about authenticity and connection. It's about immersing oneself in the local culture, traditions, and way of life and engaging with people genuinely and respectfully.
