Prepare for an Internship

Understand the benefits

No doubt, interning abroad in ecology can be challenging. But at the end of the day, you’ll gain valuable experiences and insights. You can expect the following benefits:

  • Real-world Insights. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of your field that goes beyond classroom learning, especially by experiencing it in a new country.
  • Cultural and professional experience. You’ll have the chance to work and live in a different setting, offering a fresh perspective and diverse experiences.
  • Valuable connections. One of the biggest advantages is meeting new people and building professional relationships that can benefit your future career.

Things to know

No matter which ecology internship you choose, preparation is key. Here are some pointers to consider as you get ready for your internship abroad:

  • Visa and documentation - Check visa requirements and gather all necessary paperwork. Confirm details with academic programs, embassies, and airlines.
  • Language preparation - Learn basic local phrases to ease communication and navigation.
  • Budget and logistics - Plan for accommodation, travel, and daily expenses. Consider affordable options like hostels and have a backup plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Top locations for ecology internships abroad include South Africa, Hawaii, and Ecuador. South Africa offers hands-on experience with wildlife in game reserves, Hawaii provides opportunities in marine and fisheries research, and Ecuador is ideal for fieldwork in diverse ecosystems like rainforests and coral reefs.

An ecology intern may engage in field research, data collection, and lab work. Tasks can range from monitoring wildlife, conducting surveys, and managing conservation efforts to analyzing ecosystems and assisting with restoration projects. Interns often work directly with local communities and contribute to environmental preservation.

Ecology graduates can gain hands-on experience in global environments, network with professionals in the field, and develop crucial skills in fieldwork, data analysis, and conservation. These internships also provide exposure to diverse ecosystems and cultural perspectives, making graduates more competitive in the global job market.

Paid ecology internships are becoming more common, but not all companies offer compensation. Some programs provide stipends or hourly wages, while others may be unpaid but offer academic credit or other benefits. The company's size, internship level, and qualifications can influence whether an internship is paid. It's essential to research individual internship opportunities to understand their compensation structure.

To find summer ecology internships abroad, explore specialized platforms like GoAbroad or search through university career centers. Look for programs offered by environmental NGOs, research institutions, or government agencies, focusing on summer start dates, and check requirements for eligibility and application deadlines.

My experience of a lifetime

December 05, 2025by: Will Peters - United StatesProgram: Internships in Seville, Spain - Adelante Abroad

My experience with Adelante Abroad in Sevilla was truly unforgettable, and something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Overall, the program was awesome and gave me the chance to grow both personally and professionally. From the start, the customer service was excellent. Every time I had a question or concern, the Adelante team responded quickly and made sure I felt supported throughout the entire process. I applied late, so I didn’t have many options when it came to my placement or housing. Even so, the pickup upon arrival went smoothly, and I appreciated how organized the transition was. When I got to my shared apartment, I was initially a little let down because three people were already living there and were not in the same situation as me. Luckily, they turned out to be really kind, and we got along great. My room itself was comfortable, and overall, the living situation worked out well. My internship was one of the highlights of my program. I worked near the water mainly assisting people with kayaking and paddle boarding at Club Deportivo Triana, which was such a unique and enjoyable experience. The staff there were wonderful since they were flexible, supportive, and always willing to help with anything I needed. Adelante also checked in with me from time to time, which was reassuring and made me feel taken care of in case any issues came up. Socially, I had to take the initiative to go out and meet people, since there wasn’t much organized for participants in that aspect. As someone who is naturally social, this wasn’t a problem for me, but for others, it might be a challenge. Still, living in Sevilla made it easy to explore. Everywhere you walk, there's something beautiful or unique to discover. It’s truly an incredible city. Overall, I’m really grateful for this experience. Despite a few small challenges, Adelante Abroad gave me an opportunity that I will remember forever, and I would absolutely recommend the program to anyone looking for an authentic and meaningful internship abroad.
