Ecotourism Volunteer and Intern with Galapagos National Park

by: Intercultural Outreach Initiative (IOI)

4.9 (10)VerifiedSince 2006

Established in 1959 and starting operations in 1968, Galápagos National Park is the first of its kind in Ecuador. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it makes up approximately 97% of the Galápagos Islands. Our Ecotourism program is ideal if you're interested in environmental management and passionate about promoting ecology through tourism. Acquire hands-on experience working in the park’s Communications Department. As a volunteer, you'll go to the park’s visitor sites to give satisfaction questionnaires to visitors. You'll also provide tourism-related information in situ as well as generate a statistical database from your surveys. This is a wonderful opportunity if you're pursuing a career in ecotourism and environmental management. Requirements - Some Spanish to communicate with fellow workers and visitors - Ability to work independently and in a team - Ability to make recommendations based on knowledge and experience - Flexibility in work schedules and tasks to accommodate the day-to-day needs of a local institution - Physical ability to work outdoors with potentially high sun, elements, and temperature exposure - Ability to independently collect and register data

I would absoloutely recommend this volunteer experience because travelling to the Galapagos provides an invaluable amount of knowledge on the ecosystem and importance of biodiversity, and the tortoises were cute and fun. This experience was the best way to dive into nature and surround myself with like-minded individuals that i absoloutely needed! Had so much fun and made lifelong memories in one of the most beautiful areas of the world!

I would recommend this experience to others because it is a good thing to walk so close together with nature and to see how small mistake can have huge effects to the nature. The experience you get while volunteering you can't get in any other way. It's a great thing to work together with the habitants, animals and nature of a totally different plance than home.

I would recommend this volunter experience because it's the Galápagos, it's with a great and caring institution and it's supporting the local community. I've been so lucky to come to the beautiful island of Isla Isabela and volunteer with the IOI. You can feel that you are making an impact and I made friends for life - other volunteers and my amazing host family. I would do it agaian, and maybe even will do so some time!

I would recommend this study abroad experience because it opened my eyes to the many different ways to live an amazing life, showed me amazing wildlife, and save me lifetime memories.

Limited Spanish speaker Experience

I know if I were able to speak Spanish my experience would of been completely different. I did have a good experience but I do think it would of been improved if there was more emphasis on the need to speak Spanish before I arrived.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry you felt like you could not communicate as well as you wanted. We try to have enough English-speaking staff whose job it is to support our volunteers. But we also do want to encourage cultural and language immersion in the local community and feel like the immersion is a strong aspect of our program.
