A Guide to Theology Internships Abroad
Why Intern Abroad in Theology
Theology internships, like theology students, come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you are practicing for the ministry, studying with a Shaman, or observing rituals within tribal religions, the added benefit of travelling and experiencing the larger world cannot but shed light on your own spiritual path. Whatever profession you pursue, the practical experience you will gain from interning abroad in Theology will make you a better candidate for the job, and prepare you aptly for whatever is next to come.
Locations
Even in today’s rapidly globalizing world, religion carries an undeniable regional connotation. Thus where you choose to intern abroad in Theology will affect what type of positions are available.
Christianity, the world’s most popular religion, has a foothold in most countries around the world. Especially within the Americas, Europe, and Africa, there are many opportunities to pursue an internship within the Christian theological scope.
Islam is the world’s next most popular religion, and like Christianity has a presence in many countries around the world. The Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia are areas with the largest Muslim influence, and so prospective interns interested in Islamic studies will do well to look for internship opportunities in these regions.
Hinduism and Buddhism are also both widely practiced religions in East Asia and the Indian subcontinent. There are a bevy of other smaller religions within the Eastern philosophical school that are also continuously practiced in these regions as well.
These are only a handful of the world’s most popular religions that theological scholars might take an interest in. There are countless other religions, rooted in locations all around the world, which continuously beckon pilgrims and scholars to their teachings. What religious context will you choose to intern in?
Internship Placements
Internships abroad in Theology can be found from both academic and spiritual standpoints, giving students of all creeds the opportunity to pursue their work abroad.
If you are pursuing Theology from an academic standpoint, then many internship opportunities will be related to research and fieldwork within the subject area. For example you might work alongside a professor in Sub-Saharan Africa researching religious tribal rituals, or work for an anthropological society in Europe within a division grounded in theological studies.
If you are pursuing Theology form a spiritual standpoint, then you can look for internship opportunities at seminaries, monasteries, or schools of divinity all around the world (keeping in mind, of course, that religious practices differ significantly from place to place). Often these placements combine learning under the guidance of a spiritual teacher with various outlets of charitable work that the institution might provide for the community.
Internships abroad tend to last from two to six months, depending on the organization and type of work you are doing. It is typically expected that you complete your internship either during your studies (undergraduate or graduate), or soon following graduation. Most placements are offered year round.
GoAbroad Insider Tips
Broaden Your Perspective – Interning abroad in Theology will enable you to travel the world and experience life in a separate cultural and religious context. What you learn about your own while abroad might surprise you.
Free Your Spirit– Interning abroad is the perfect opportunity to have a spiritual adventure between college and professional life. Exploring the world out on your own can be an enlightening experience, and is the chance to apply your theological studies towards productive self reflection.
Learn on the Job – Whatever sect or type of theological profession you are considering entering, an internship abroad will provide you with newfound skills and flexibility by applying your studies to work. There’s no better way to gain insight than to learn by doing!

Fashion Internship Experience in Korea as a Colombian
August 20, 2026by: Carolina * - ColombiaProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I joined an internship at a startup focused on sustainable fashion, creating bags and accessories with a mission to care for the planet. For every item sold, one is donated to a child in Africa. My role involved developing marketing, business, and expansion strategies, applying everything I learned in my Master’s and undergraduate studies. This experience taught me the importance of adapting to different corporate cultures and allowed me to contribute meaningfully to a company with a beautiful mission.

Marketing Internship in Seoul, South Korea
August 20, 2026by: Lovely * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
After graduating with a degree I wasn’t sure how to use, I found myself feeling lost. I knew I needed time to refocus and understand what I truly enjoy doing. That’s why I decided to take a gap year, to focus on myself and explore new opportunities. When I was first consulted by Korea Gap Year, I immediately felt understood. They guided me through every step of the process and made sure all of my questions were answered. Their support helped me feel at ease before and during my stay in South Korea. I came to Seoul for a one-month internship at Korea Gap Year, where I worked in marketing—my first time ever in this kind of role. I was both nervous and excited, and I truly wanted to do my best. Three years earlier, I had studied abroad in Seoul for six months, so I already had an idea of what to expect. I knew a month would be the perfect length for me this time both emotionally and financially. If I could have stayed longer, I absolutely would have, because I really enjoyed my time working at Korea Gap Year. At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Korean work environment. When I arrived, Olivia kindly introduced me to everyone and gave me a tour of the office. I was asked to present myself and share my skills so they could assign tasks accordingly. One of the things I enjoyed most was translating past participants’ stories into English and Spanish. It turned out to be something I loved, and it made me realize that I want to pursue a career in this field. My schedule was Monday through Thursday, 9 AM to 6 PM. It was definitely an adjustment especially sitting for eight hours straight but I got used to it. One thing that surprised me was how quiet the office could be. In the U.S., people often greet each other with “good morning” or “have a good day,” whereas in Korea, people just quietly go about their work. At first, I felt a bit rude not saying anything, but eventually, the introvert in me appreciated the quiet too. My main goal during this internship was to become more confident and focused on my career. While I sometimes felt frustrated knowing I had to go back home, this experience gave me time to reflect. The job market in the U.S. has been tough, and I often felt uncertain about what was waiting for me. But living alone in Korea for a month was an eye-opener. It helped me learn so much about myself. I've always struggled to express how I feel, but being here helped me open up. Being a student in Korea three years ago was a completely different experience from working here. It’s much easier to make friends as a student. As a worker, it was more difficult, but I appreciated the little moments when locals would approach me during dinner just to speak English. Some even asked about my Mexican heritage and my Spanish, which made me happy and proud to share. It was a meaningful exchange of cultures. Korean culture was breathtaking to experience again. From packed subways during rush hour to cute themed cafes and late-night karaoke, everything felt surreal. I know I’ll truly miss this lifestyle when I return home. It's definitely true when they say Seoul never sleeps! Don’t be afraid to try new things! Try new foods, drinks, visit places, and step out of your comfort zone. You’re in a different country, don't be shy. If you feel discouraged or homesick just remember that you are working towards your goal and future. I also believe your accomodation should be around a loud neighborhood so it’s not totally quiet making you feel at ease being abroad alone. Thank you, Korea Gap Year, for welcoming me as an intern. I’m incredibly grateful for all that I learned and for the support you gave me. To future participants: - Don’t overpack, unless you don’t plan on spending money in Korea. Honestly, it's hard not to! Everything is more affordable compared to the U.S. or Europe, so bring two suitcases. - Research before you go! Watch videos about getting around Incheon Airport, SIM cards, and public transportation. It’s super helpful. - Be prepared for loneliness if you’re traveling for the first time. At home, eating alone is comforting, but in a new country, it can feel isolating. Thankfully, some coworkers invited me to eat together, which I truly appreciated. - Try new things! Whether it’s food, places, or stepping out of your comfort zone. You’re in a different country! Don’t be shy. If you ever feel homesick, remind yourself why you’re here and what you’re working toward. - Stay somewhere lively. If possible, choose accommodation in a busier area. The noise and energy can help ease feelings of loneliness. What to Bring: - Seoul has tons of stores. Daiso is a lifesaver for essentials and affordable finds. - Two things I had trouble with: finding foundation that matches my skin tone, and pants that fit (if you’re tall, they may run short). So pack those ahead of time! - Don’t forget an adapter for your electronic, but don’t worry if you forget something everything’s accessible here. My Gap Year Review! Environment ★★★★★ I was not used to such a quiet working environment but it was really nice getting to experience a different working culture. Language ★★★★★ It was nice being around the Korean language as it made me learn new vocabulary but if you don’t speak it that’s okay there so many things that are translated to English. Accommodation ★★★★★ I got an Airbnb near the company which was so convenient especially during working hours it gets super busy in the subway. So, if you can get an accommodation near the company I suggest that. Safety ★★★★★ Seoul is very safe in my opinion so I never had to worry about any dangerous parts or activities but it’s still an important thing to be safe wherever you are. Learning ★★★★★ Thank you Korea Gap Year for giving me this opportunity! I learned a lot of new skills and realized what tasks I really enjoy doing. I also learned more Korean than I thought!

Best summer ever
August 19, 2026by: Bryce Brenkus - United StatesThe internship experience in Barcelona was absolutely amazing both in the office and out of the office. Our local host Isabel was amazing when getting us acclimated to the city, as well as providing reccomendations and ensuring our safety. On top of that, her community events that she planned for our group were so much fun whether it was a day trip to the beach, going to dinner, or attractions like park guell. The internship on the other hand was a great work experience, and I learned so much about working abroad.

Honestly made us feel so comfortable being in Barcelona.

Beyond was great at having activities and initiating meet ups with the other interns. I loved the atmosphere of Berlin. I felt that it had a very gritty, artistic vibe to it which I really enjoyed.
Whiskey Time!
August 10, 2026by: Elena Gao - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
I had such a wonderful experience working at a Whiskey Distillery in Dublin. The staff were all so genuinely nice and made me feel right at home. Rotating through the cafe, reception, and the back bar allowed me to understand all the different phases of a working distillery, and meeting the bosses was a great addition to the program. Dublin attracts so much tourism, I really enjoyed meeting so many different people from all over the world at my work. It felt like a true mix of diversity, which allowed me to learn so many unique things from everyone I encountered. I was also incredibly glad to use my Mandarin skills to help out. On my days off, I had the best time exploring Dublin, traveling around Ireland, and adventuring into other European countries. It was a beautiful journey both professionally and personally!

Thanks to Connect-123 I was able to strengthen education and gain real life experience that will help me with my future profession.
My time in Taiwan with Asia Internship Program!
August 07, 2026by: Mal Carter - United StatesMy experience with Asia Internship Program was amazing from start to finish. I had very specific requirements for my internship, including finding an unpaid position that was longer than 8 weeks and focused on nonprofit or legal work rather than English teaching. While the placement process took some time, Jeff Oo was incredibly professional and reassuring throughout the process. He was honest about updates, never gave false hope, and made sure he was finding opportunities that were truly the right fit for me rather than rushing the process. Once I arrived in Taiwan, Nisha Shahi and Roro Lee were also incredibly supportive. Nisha helped arrange my transportation to and from the airport, answered my questions quickly when I was settling into my accommodation, and regularly checked in to make sure I was doing well. Their support made moving to a new country feel much less overwhelming. The internship itself exceeded my expectations, and I felt welcomed and comfortable as a queer Black student. I’m incredibly grateful for the care, professionalism, and effort the AIP team put into making this experience successful. I would highly recommend Asia Internship Program to any student looking for an international internship experience!

I’m so sad to go but I had a blast !!
August 07, 2026by: Arianna Barney - United StatesI honestly had a pretty solid time. It’s always been a dream of mine to do something this crazy like living and working abroad. My company was super nice and my work hours were super nice too. Most everyone was flexible with my needs and assisting me when needed. I was a research invest analyst so, they have work/positions for every major. So if an Interview doesn’t go as planned there will be more opportunities. The only downside was that I would finish my work sometimes too quickly and would not have anything to do but that’s not the case for most interns. Other interns that were here often had to work weekends. My company was super laid back and often treated me and my colleagues to lunch and dinner. As long as you make the effort to communicate with them even if you don’t speak Korean fluently they will see the effort and do the same for you.
Beyond Academy // New York
August 05, 2026by: Moses Paiewonsky - Dominican RepublicSuper personalized experience with extremely helpful & friendly staff along every step of the way! After finishing my program in New York, I can say that Beyond is a great way to ensure a legit internship experience in a field you're looking to pursue & I'd heavily recommend their services.
Great experience!
August 05, 2026by: Phea Leyshon - United KingdomI spent 8 weeks in Seoul with Beyond Academy and overall had a really positive experience. The programme was a great opportunity to gain professional experience in Korea while also developing my confidence working in an international environment. The company organised a range of activities and events for interns, which made it easy to meet other people on the programme and experience different parts of Seoul together. Both the Beyond Academy staff and other interns were very friendly and supportive. The internship also gave me useful professional experience and helped me better understand working culture in Korea, as well as giving me something valuable to take forward in my future career. Although I had to leave my internship partway through due to personal circumstances, I chose to remain in Korea and Beyond Academy were very understanding and supportive of my situation, which I really appreciated. One thing I would recommend to future interns is to keep in mind that internship placements can be a bit hit or miss depending on the company and role. If possible, I would recommend doing a few interviews and considering different offers rather than accepting the first placement you are offered. Overall, though, Beyond Academy provided a friendly and well-supported way to experience working and living in Seoul.
What a Time in Seoul!
August 05, 2026by: Tahj Cain-Jones - United StatesMy time in Seoul was extremely memorable, from the people I met, to the adventures I had, it was quite literally the most exciting time of my life. The program had a lot of weekend trips, and opportunities to interact with the other interns, and chances to explore, so I really appreciated being able to see South Korea the way I was able to. From initially not knowing anyone in the program, to being able to recognize everyone by name, my time in Korea was not wasted !

August 04, 2026by: Julia Cholewo - PolandMy time with beyond academy was amazing. I went to NYC for 6 weeks and honestly it was an adventure I will never forget. Had the best time in Valencia!
August 03, 2026by: Carson Koenning - United StatesI had a great experience with AIP Study Abroad Internships, especially because of how kind and helpful the staff was throughout the entire process. From the beginning, everyone I interacted with was incredibly friendly, responsive, and genuinely wanted to make sure I had a good experience abroad. Whenever I had a question or needed help with something, the AIP team was always easy to reach and willing to help. Moving abroad and starting an internship in another country can definitely be stressful at times, but having such a supportive staff made the whole experience much easier. They were welcoming, patient, and always made me feel like I had someone I could reach out to if I needed anything. Overall, I’m very grateful for everyone at AIP who helped me along the way and made my time abroad such a positive experience. I would definitely recommend AIP to anyone considering an internship abroad!
I had a great time
August 01, 2026by: Gabriel Madrid - United StatesBeyond Academy gives college students the opportunity to have an unforgettable experience in a new place as well as concrete work experience both for a more complete resume and sharper skills to apply in your career. I met some amazing people and developed a great relationship with my host company. If you need an internship, a new and unfamiliar setting to promote growth, or a new group of friends beyond academy is the place to put your trust in. It challenged me to adapt quickly, build confidence, and gain valuable experience that will benefit me long after the internship ended.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Gabriel! We’re so glad your summer in New York gave you the opportunity to build meaningful connections, grow your confidence, and gain hands-on experience that you can carry with you into your future career. We especially love hearing that your relationship with your host company was such a positive part of your experience. An internship is about so much more than adding a line to your resume, it’s about challenging yourself, adapting to a new environment, and discovering what you’re capable of along the way. Thank you for trusting Beyond Academy with your summer in NYC and for recommending us to fellow students looking to build their resumes and experience something new. We’re so happy you made memories and connections that will stay with you long after your internship!
