How to Intern Internationally

Overview

How to get an internship abroad

If you want to know how to get an international internship, it’s actually quite similar to finding a study abroad program. Start by asking yourself two key questions:

  • What are your career goals? Finding internships abroad largely depends on narrowing down your career goals. Once you know what it is that you want to do or which skills you want to improve, you’ll be that much closer to finding the right internship abroad for you.
  • Do you need college credit? - Are you a college student seeking credit towards your degree, or are you a post grad or even mid-career professional? If you don’t require college credit for your international internship, it will actually greatly widen your options, since some university degree programs can be strict about what they accept for credit. If you don’t need college credit, your program options are basically limitless—meaning your dream internship is practically guaranteed. Intern abroad organizations have connections all over the world, so if you’re willing to pay the program fee, you’ll get unrivaled experience to add to your resume or CV.

Locations

Where to find an international internship

If you’re looking for internships overseas rather than in your home city or country, then we can guess you have an affinity for travel. If you have a specific type of internship abroad in mind, it might make the destination obvious. However, if you simply want professional experience in a certain destination in order to perfect your language skills or learn the cultural norms, then you should let that guide your program search.

If you're trying to improve your Spanish skills, then choosing Spain, Mexico, or Peru could be good places to start with. But if you want to immerse yourself in Japanese culture then you're going to have to go to Japan.

International internships exist everywhere in the world! But if you want to know where to start looking, start with where you want to go. It can also be helpful to either look for international internships at your companies of interest, or to ask your program advisor where the best internships in your career field are located. When looking for the best places to intern abroad, it helps to think about your career goals first.

If you want to explore the business world, then places like France, China, and Italy could be a great start. But if you're more interested in wildlife or conservation, then you'll want to consider destinations like Costa Rica, South Africa, or Thailand

Finances

How to afford an internship

How will you pay for an internship abroad? Interning abroad through a program can be pricey, but worth it. Your internship provider will find you a killer placement in your chosen field, while taking care of details like accommodation and meals. Some even offer post-internship job finding assistance! All of these benefits come at a price, but it pays off (sometimes literally). Plus, it’s not impossible to find a paid internship abroad (although you’ll have to do a bit more digging).

Many students and young professionals opt to fundraise for their international internships, but scholarships and grants for interning abroad also exist!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to find internships abroad

If you’re looking for an internship abroad, a common misconception is that you need to find and apply for specific opportunities, as you would normally do with jobs.

However, there are actually thousands of opportunities to custom-build a guaranteed internship abroad. These opportunities operate similarly to study abroad, but are instead focused specifically on professional growth and experience. Our internships abroad directory is a great place to start your search. This is an excellent resource if you want to search by destination, career field, or timeframe.

Are there paid internships abroad?

Yes, there are definitely paid internships abroad. However, it will be far more common to find unpaid internships. Depending on your field and destination, paid internship opportunities are few and far between and tend to be a lot more competitive.

If you want to intern abroad but can only find unpaid internships, then you’ll need to find the additional value in the experience. Will you be able to network with important professionals in your industry? Will you receive help with writing your resume and cover letter? Will you get a letter of recommendation or two? Early in your career, these types of benefits can change the trajectory of your career.

Are internships abroad useful?

Internships abroad are highly useful! This is true no matter what your academic or career field is, but especially so if you plan to live or work abroad someday, or really want a way to make your resume more competitive. Interning abroad is an excellent way to get work experience while availing all the other benefits offered by studying abroad.

What are some benefits of internships abroad?

There are many benefits of interning abroad—namely, the exceptional personal and professional growth that comes hand-in-hand with the experience. Plus, internships abroad are flexible. You can intern abroad during college, after graduation, or if you’re interested in a career change, and there are thousands of opportunities across dozens of fields.

And not to mention, you’ll have life-changing adventures and make tons of new friends and connections!

What are the best intern abroad programs like?

With thousands of opportunities around the world, how do you find the best of the best when it comes to internships abroad? It’s actually pretty simple—it all comes down to what your goals are and what you want out of an internship abroad!

A few things your internship should absolutely have are pre-departure support, resume writing help, help with your job search post-internship, and alumni networking. And if the entire premise of your internship is a custom placement, you should expect them to deliver on your initial wants and requests.

I don’t think any summer will top the one I just spent interning in Prague, Czech Republic. 🇨🇿

Program: AIFS Abroad Internships in Prague, Czech Republic

5

I was definitely nervous before going abroad, but AIFS made the whole process so easy. They set you up with everything you need beforehand, and continue to support you throughout your entire time abroad. On my first day in Prague, I met our two program leaders, who are both locals and somehow knew everything about the city. They gave me so many great recommendations throughout my time there, helped me whenever I had questions about navigating life in Prague, and constantly checked in to see how my internship was going and if I needed anything. One of my favorite parts of the experience was getting to explore Prague and other nearby countries with the other students in the program. We became so close and made so many memories together. AIFS also planned activities throughout the summer that I never would have thought to do on my own, including pottery painting, a jazz concert, a theatre performance, group dinners, water activities, and even a weekend trip to a town in the Czech countryside. These experiences were such a huge part of what made the summer so special. I felt like I was actually living in Prague rather than just visiting as a tourist. Our program leaders showed us the local spots, introduced us to different parts of Czech culture, and helped us experience the city in a way we probably never would have been able to on our own. Professionally, I was also really happy with my internship placement as a marketing intern. It was a great fit for the skills I wanted to strengthen and the goals I had going into the summer. I learned what it’s like to work in a different country, communicate across cultures, adapt to different workplace norms, and build professional relationships outside of my immediate team. Between making lifelong friendships, connecting with people at my internship, exploring Prague and surrounding countries, and constantly trying new things, this summer pushed me outside of my comfort zone in the best way. I came home more confident, independent, adaptable, and grateful for all of the people and experiences that made this summer so unforgettable. I would choose this experience a million times over. ❤️

Me and the other girls in the intern program here on one of our last nights in Prague!

Good professional launchpad into the creative world

August 19, 2026by: Grace - United States

Program: ArtBound Initiative - Creative Internships in New York

5

Overall, I had a great experience. ABI was super on top of everything throughout the whole process - from the modules, to recruitment, through my actual internship; everyone was very communicative and responsive, which I appreciated. I got my first-choice internship type and location, working as a design intern at a boutique creative marketing agency in NYC. I enjoyed getting a look behind the curtain at all the different aspects of agency life. From a design standpoint, I learned a lot about the intersection between client management and conceptual creative thinking, but I also got to learn a bit about the account management and production side of the agency world too. Overall, the experience gave me a much stronger understanding of agency workflow and the competencies needed to excel in similar settings in the future.

Love South Korea, Love Korea Gapyear.

August 19, 2026by: Jodie * - Germany

Program: Beauty/ SkinCare Internship in Seoul

5

Hi~ I’m Jodie from Germany, and my love for K-pop is what first led me to Korea. I’m a huge fan of BTS, and I also love Mamamoo and Seventeen. Because of them, I dreamed of visiting Korea one day—not just as a tourist, but to truly experience everyday life in this country. Through the Korea Gap Year program, I had the chance to work as an intern at a Korean cosmetics company, and it became one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. My time as an intern was both fun and incredibly rewarding. Everyone I worked with was kind and welcoming, which helped me feel comfortable from the very beginning. I learned so much about Korean cosmetics—how they are developed, marketed, and used by people in Korea. I even found skincare products that were perfect for my own skin. Through this experience, I finally understood why Korean beauty products are loved all over the world. What made this experience even better was the thoughtful support from Korea Gap Year. They took great care of everything in advance and always made sure I was doing well. They also recommended places to visit and fun activities to try, which helped me enjoy my time in Korea beyond work. Thanks to their guidance, I was able to explore the country with confidence and curiosity. My time in Korea was truly, deeply happy. Every day was filled with excitement, learning, and warm memories. Korea now feels like a place close to my heart, not just a destination on a map. One day, I hope to return again with my friends and family!

Beauty Intern in Seoul

Experience in the Beauty Industry

August 19, 2026by: Nora * - Canada

Program: Beauty/ SkinCare Internship in Seoul

5

I always wanted to experience what it would be like to work in the beauty industry. This internship gave me the opportunity to explore my interests and learn more about how the industry works behind. I was able to ask questions, discover things I was curious about, and gain real insights from the team. It was exciting to see how ideas become actual products and how much effort goes into creating beauty trends and experiences. This experience helped me better understand the industry and gave me valuable knowledge and confidence for my future. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity and would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in beauty, creativity, and gaining practical experience in an international environment.

I feel more prepared

August 19, 2026by: Tanasia LaBrew - United States

Program: ArtBound Initiative - Creative Internships in New York

5

After doing a six-month internship earned through ArtBound, I feel more prepared for the type of work in my industry. Before my start date, I did the ABI Academy, which helped build my interview skills, improve my resume, and helped me understand how the choices I made for my portfolio could affect the quality of opportunities I am offered. During the duration of my internship, I was in constant contact with the program coordinators, who were able to guide me during a period of time when I was having communication issues with my boss at Asia Contemporary Art Forum. My role was web/media designer and curatorial fellow; however, I wore many hats while doing my internship. I feel that I was able to truly learn how to work in a small team, how to take charge and make decisions, and improve my institutional style writing. Though I didn't get to participate in most of the intern gatherings during my internship program, I like that I will always have a community to engage with thanks to ArtBound, now that I am an ABI Alumni.

Best summer ever

The internship experience in Barcelona was absolutely amazing both in the office and out of the office. Our local host Isabel was amazing when getting us acclimated to the city, as well as providing reccomendations and ensuring our safety. On top of that, her community events that she planned for our group were so much fun whether it was a day trip to the beach, going to dinner, or attractions like park guell. The internship on the other hand was a great work experience, and I learned so much about working abroad.

An Unforgettable Pre-Med Journey in Spain

August 19, 2026by: Kayla S - United States

Program: (2+2) Pre-Med Internship + PHTLS Certification in Spain

5

My experience with GlobalEd Abroad’s 2+2 Pre-Med Internship + PHTLS Certification in Spain was an incredible opportunity to combine professional healthcare experience, international education, and cultural immersion. The program gave me the chance to gain valuable exposure to the medical field while experiencing what it is like to live and learn in Spain. The combination of the Pre-Med internship and PHTLS certification made the experience especially unique, allowing me to develop both professionally and personally. What stood out most was the support and organization from the GlobalEd Abroad team. From the moment the program began, I felt supported throughout the experience. The staff was approachable, helpful, and genuinely committed to making sure students had a meaningful experience both inside and outside of their internships. Living in Spain also added a completely different dimension to the program. Being immersed in a new culture, navigating daily life in another country, and meeting people from different backgrounds made the experience unforgettable. Overall, I would highly recommend the GlobalEd Abroad 2+2 Pre-Med Internship + PHTLS Certification in Spain to students looking for hands-on international experience, professional development, and the opportunity to grow outside of their comfort zone. It was a rewarding experience that I will carry with me long after the program ended.

I had a great time in Berlin! I got to experience living on my own for the first time in a brand new city. Learn how to use public transportation, save money, take care of myself, and learn new things from my internship.

Program: Intern in Paris with Absolute Internship

5

This internship was truly eye-opening. It was my first time in a real workplace, and it pushed me completely out of my comfort zone — from the language barrier to adapting to a professional environment for the first time. I got to apply finance in a hands-on way that no classroom could ever teach, working on real projects with real businesses. Beyond the technical skills, I learned so much about myself: how I handle pressure, how I show up professionally, and just how seriously I take my work when it matters. It was challenging in the best way, and it genuinely shaped how I see my future career path. If I could do it all over again, I would in a heartbeat.

From Studying China to Living It

August 18, 2026by: Giada Gaetani - Italy

Program: Intern in Shanghai with Absolute Internship

5

After studying Mandarin for ten years, moving to Shanghai felt like turning years of learning into real life. Suddenly, the language I had studied in classrooms became the language I used every day: to work, connect with people and truly experience China from within. My internship challenged me professionally, while living on the other side of the world pushed me to become more independent, adaptable and confident. Knowing Mandarin helped me overcome cultural barriers and made every interaction more meaningful, from the workplace to everyday life and travelling across China. I went to Shanghai looking for international experience in one of the countries I love most, but I came back with something much bigger: the feeling that ten years of studying had finally found their purpose. China was no longer something I had learned about—it became a part of my story. Choosing just one photo to represent this experience almost feels impossible—two months in China gave me far too many places, people and memories worth capturing in a single frame.

Australian media & film internship sharpened my marketing and pitching skills

August 18, 2026by: Cassidy Lampkin

Program: Affordable Internships in Australia | Intern Abroad HQ

5

I feel a lot more confident in my marketing skills after my 9-week Media & Film Production internship in Australia. Now, I have a better understanding of corporate environments, professional dynamics, and writing techniques. I was able to adjust my academic writing style to one that fits within the theme of marketing copy, which gave me more options when it comes to professional projects. I also have a much better idea of marketing perspectives I can bring to my work in film. Now, I know how to present approaches to specific demographics and how to appeal to general audiences. The transferable skills & practical experience gained will be a great addition to my resume as a filmmaker. I will able to contribute to strategies going forward with confidence and attention to detail in my film marketing pitches.

How My Psychology Internship in Cape Town Expanded My Cultural Competence and Inspired My Future Specialization

August 18, 2026by: Larni Moloney

Program: Affordable Psychology Internships Abroad

4

Since completing the Psychology internship in Cape Town, I've been more empowered in several key ways. I've developed greater cultural competence within my field, along with a stronger understanding of how to draw on other professionals and networks to bring together resources that genuinely support a community or individual. I also feel more confident in the value of my informal counselling skills, and a renewed appreciation for the value of my psychology degree and what it equips me to offer. My experience co-facilitating the DBT session for clients with BPD has genuinely inspired me to consider this as a potential area of future specialisation, and I'd like to continue building my knowledge and skills in this space. I enjoyed staying in the big intern house with the other interns and exploring Cape Town together. The cultural insight from the local coordinator and internship was very insightful and has allowed me to personally and professionally appreciate and develop my cross-cultural competence.

I decided to do an internship abroad through Absolute internships with a question, "can I live and work in Japan comfortably?" and I can say with confidence that the experience they provided absolutely delivered a resounding "Yes!". I was delivered a painless process duing selection, and they found me the perfect company that I could use my skills as an english and history double major to make a positive impact that was appreciated by my host company (Yukari Japan Tour, a tour company specializing in sake brewery tours) and showed me how I can be valued for the work I can do. The expereicne was made fun and relaxed with fantastic coordinators that cared about the work they were doing with us and who seemed to genuinely want the best for us as both representatives of Absolute Internships and as peers. I made some wonderful memories with both my fellow interns and my host ccompany, and I will forever be grateful to Absolute Internships for fascilitating the making of them.
