Join the Institute for Global Studies' Dive Shop / Reef Survey internship, and work with both local and foreign staff members. In this program, you’ll have the opportunity to become PADI dive certified or work toward the next level of training. In addition, you will assist staff members in all aspects of running a renowned dive shop as well as work on a marine research project. Activities will include assisting staff on dive excursions, helping to convey difficult concepts in the English language to guests, preparing gear for dives, constructing or delivering marketing materials, conducting reef surveys to assist reef management, and preparing brochures and the website to highlight threats to reef systems.

Travel to the Coral Triangle, learn to SCUBA dive in one of the most biodiverse marine regions in the world, and contribute to marine conservation science. You’ll be assisting a team of marine scientists to conduct critical research on coral reef systems and develop community-based conservation systems. This organization operates from Bulak, Dauin, Philippines, conducting long-term and fine-scale research on coral bleaching, corallivorous invertebrates, and ocean pollution. As they aim to involve the scientific community by publishing their findings in reports and journals, they also work to encourage and support locally-led, grassroots conservation strategies through evidence-based community outreach programs. They are a valuable asset to marine ecology in the Philippines and the furtherment of Marine Conservation Science worldwide. As an intern, you'll be assisting with the collection, processing & analysis of data from their Dauin Long-Term Reef Monitoring Project - going underwater research dives where you’ll catalog species, map habitats, & monitor biodiversity. You’ll also work on the data-analysis of images gathered using marine science software systems & equipment.

We offer a unique Voluntourism & Cultural Exploration Program in Kisumu County, Western Kenya. This opportunity is designed for individuals who want to balance meaningful volunteer work with exploring local culture, nature, and tourist attractions. Participants spend part of their time supporting community initiatives such as women’s empowerment programs, gardening projects, youth activities, or community outreach. The volunteer activities are flexible and designed to allow participants to contribute while still having time to explore the region. The program also provides guided opportunities to discover some of the most beautiful and culturally important places in Western Kenya. We assist volunteers in planning trips and connecting with trusted local guides at discounted community rates. Possible destinations include Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kakamega Rainforest, Mfangano Island, Kit Mikayi, and the ancestral home of former US President Barack Obama in Siaya County. This program is ideal for travelers who want to experience authentic Kenyan culture, support grassroots community work, and explore unique landscapes while contributing positively to the local community.

Intern at a national park in Japan. World Unite! offers placements related to nature-based tourism and ecotourism, which may include diving and sailing. You assist the Ama women at the visitor center in Ise-Shima National Park. These women don’t use diving equipment but instead employ century–old traditional techniques to scour the ocean for seafood in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. You also offer boat tours with a biological and cultural focus. Satoyama-Experience offers ecotourism internships in Takayama, featuring guided bicycle tours conducted in both English and Japanese. Interns assist as guides, help with reception and marketing, and participate in community activities. The internship lasts at least four weeks and requires an interview. In Shizuoka, interns assist with water sports and guesthouse operations from June to October. Duties include diving, sailing, and hospitality tasks. No prior diving experience is required. Sailing tours may also be available. Internships last at least three weeks and are conducted in English.

This internship encompasses tasks revolving around nine core teams: 1) marine mammal research and conservation, 2) marine ecology, 3) GIS and remote sensing, 4) environmental law and policy, 5) terrestrial research and conservation, 6) microplastic and laboratory projects, 7) Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary, 8) Media, PR, and graphic design, and 9) environmental education. Each team comprises professional marine specialists and volunteers who participate in international marine conservation and educational projects around Europe, eliminating language barriers and offering international expertise. Based at a PADI Platinum dive center on the beautiful Pacific coast of Costa Rica, this 4 or 10-week course trains you as a professional PADI Divemaster. Alongside your professional qualifications, you will gain skills and knowledge performing marine science research using underwater survey and data collection techniques. Your work contributes to the upkeep of scientific records, which help monitor the health of our oceans. You will emerge from the course with hands-on experience in marine research to back up your top-level scuba certifications.
