Community & Eco-Tourism Internship in Ecuador

Join a hands-on, personalized internship to help families & indigenous communities develop profitable tourism destinations that preserve local culture & ecosystems. The challenge: Guaranda is stunning, both in terms of landscapes & culture. However, it's one of Ecuador's least developed regions; 40% of rural people live in poverty & many are forced to cut down the last remaining native forest to farm or leave where they were born to find an income. Through this, the culture begins to deteriorate, and unique ecosystems are lost. Local people lack the education & resources to find innovative ways to make a dignified living that preserves their culture & landscapes. The solution: Community & eco-tourism have the potential to not only provide an income but also have the potential to regenerate native landscapes & celebrate indigenous cultures. By supporting communities & local businesses to develop their ideas, improve their spaces, create sustainable business models, and reach the right tourists for what they can offer, there is a huge potential to enrich the lives of people visiting Guaranda while changing the lives of local people for the better.

A Guide to Resort Internships Abroad

Why Intern Abroad in a Resort

The rewards of resort internships abroad as opposed to resort internships at home are immeasurable. Undergraduates studying hospitality or tourism will gain invaluable experience and insights about future career opportunities, which will allow them to fulfill degree requirements and gain an edge on their peers by nailing down long term employment upon graduation. However, recent hospitality graduates should equally consider jazzing up their resumes and building their networks through resort internships abroad.

Many long-term resort jobs require international experience, because most customers are travelers coming from around the world. If you already have experience working with people from different cultures under your belt, you will instantly be a more attractive employee for companies looking to hire full time employees. If you intern at a resort in Thailand, for example, you will pick up valuable information about Thai people, such as basic Thai phrases and cultural customs, which may be beneficial in future professional situations.

Resort internships will not only allow you to hone your skills related to customer service, marketing, or maybe even management, internship placements abroad have the potential to change your life, and possibly the lives of others. By immersing yourself in another culture, your perspective of global issues will change forever. The friendships and connections formed during your resort internship will not only impact your future, they will also make a positive impact on the businesses, customers, and colleagues you meet along the way.

An Unforgettable Internship in South Africa

March 06, 2026by: Katie Larick - United States

Program: VACorps Professional Internship Program

10

I absolutely loved my placement. Initially, I thought I would rotate through a different unit each week, but I ended up spending most of my time in the maternity ward because I enjoyed it so much. During my internship, I observed 23 deliveries and a number of interesting medical cases. I also learned a great deal about how the healthcare system here operates. Overall, the medical officers and professional nurses were wonderful to work with. They are often more direct than doctors and nurses in the U.S., but I came to appreciate that approach and found it to be very effective. I am incredibly grateful for my time in South Africa and will carry this experience with me throughout my future career in healthcare. One of my personal goals in coming to Cape Town was to spend time away from home and learn how to navigate my anxiety in a healthy and effective way. I feel proud that I was able to do that, and it made the experience even more meaningful.
