Heading out on a geology internship anywhere in the world, there’s plenty of stuff to know and research. International geological internships will involve either laboratory work, fieldwork, or a combination of the two. Here are the basics for anyone participating in one.

• Visa and paper requirements. You’ll need a visa and other important information relevant to your program. Professional programs, embassies, and airlines are the best places to get the most current and required material for your experience.
• Language skills. Check to see if there are any language requirements. If you’re going to be learning the basics, consider learning a few things before going. It can be helpful during the introductory period. Knowing or learning the basics of a language is respectful to the locals.
• Cost and logistics. There are plenty of places to intern but with varying costs of living. Commonly, housing is provided in the form of dormitory-style quarters, homestays, or apartments.
• Health and safety. Read up on and follow all rules and regulations of the country’s health and safety guidelines. Get all recommended vaccinations and check-ups before departure.
• Cultural and social etiquette. Learn how to say hello—if you don’t know already! More specifically, knowing how the country you’re headed to greets one another. Take an afternoon and research the dos and don'ts of the country you’re visiting.
