Through an international internship, you will learn about current issues around the world as well as get a better understanding of the local culture and realities on the ground. By working with populations in need as well as in-country leaders, you will get an idea of where you’d like to focus your career and how your passions fit with your professional goals. Before starting a human rights internship abroad it can be easy to romanticize work in the field; by directly working in the field for an extended period of time, you will gain a more in-depth idea of the day-to-day challenges and rewards of the fie

A Guide to Human Rights Internships Abroad

Why Intern Abroad

Protecting human rights around the globe allows you to make a difference and be directly involved in social transformation for different communities. By becoming engaged in human rights work abroad, you will gain specific experiences that will help inform you of future concentrations within the field. You may have hands-on training while interning abroad in human rights, on topics such as advocacy, civil rights litigation, and community organizing.

Many organizations give human rights interns a significant amount of responsibility in cases and projects, which will allow you to have a good idea of the specific tasks that go into generating change. There will also be time to explore the local area around your internship, as well as time to travel, and many human rights internships abroad incorporate cultural events or excursions.

An internship in human rights will give you an understanding of best practices and methods for community self-empowerment. Many human rights organizations place an emphasis on economic, social, and political development through workshops, trainings, and mentorship programs. So, you might be helping with education and outreach, building partnerships, or directly assisting with establishing programs in a community.

You could intern abroad in human rights with a non-profit organization, local government, community center, or even a private company. After your internship abroad you will have an understanding of the systems in place at the local, regional, and national level that influence human rights. Through spending time in the field and working directly on specific projects, you will build competencies and abilities that will make you more employable in the human rights sector.

Yes. There are some NGOs and international groups that offer remote roles for human rights interns. Tasks often include research, digital campaigns, and report writing. However, many prefer in-person experiences for cultural immersion and on-the-ground advocacy.

Popular destinations include Malawi, Ghana, Cambodia, and Ecuador. Human rights internships abroad may involve NGOs in developing countries, international courts, or UN offices in global cities. Each location offers unique cultural and professional experiences.

My experience of a lifetime

December 05, 2025by: Will Peters - United StatesProgram: Internships in Seville, Spain - Adelante Abroad

My experience with Adelante Abroad in Sevilla was truly unforgettable, and something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. Overall, the program was awesome and gave me the chance to grow both personally and professionally. From the start, the customer service was excellent. Every time I had a question or concern, the Adelante team responded quickly and made sure I felt supported throughout the entire process. I applied late, so I didn’t have many options when it came to my placement or housing. Even so, the pickup upon arrival went smoothly, and I appreciated how organized the transition was. When I got to my shared apartment, I was initially a little let down because three people were already living there and were not in the same situation as me. Luckily, they turned out to be really kind, and we got along great. My room itself was comfortable, and overall, the living situation worked out well. My internship was one of the highlights of my program. I worked near the water mainly assisting people with kayaking and paddle boarding at Club Deportivo Triana, which was such a unique and enjoyable experience. The staff there were wonderful since they were flexible, supportive, and always willing to help with anything I needed. Adelante also checked in with me from time to time, which was reassuring and made me feel taken care of in case any issues came up. Socially, I had to take the initiative to go out and meet people, since there wasn’t much organized for participants in that aspect. As someone who is naturally social, this wasn’t a problem for me, but for others, it might be a challenge. Still, living in Sevilla made it easy to explore. Everywhere you walk, there's something beautiful or unique to discover. It’s truly an incredible city. Overall, I’m really grateful for this experience. Despite a few small challenges, Adelante Abroad gave me an opportunity that I will remember forever, and I would absolutely recommend the program to anyone looking for an authentic and meaningful internship abroad.
