A Guide to High School Programs Abroad in France
Best Cities for Teens
Some high school programs in France will take you throughout various locations across the countryside, so you will not have to settle down in one city. These exploration programs can be a great way to experience many different aspects of the country while learning all about French life and culture from a variety of viewpoints.
Paris is the obvious first choice for many looking for a city-rooted experience. France’s capital is the largest urban area in the European Union, a leading global city with immense influence in culture, economics, and politics, and, most important of all, the home of France’s greatest football club, Paris Saint-Germain.
The opportunities to study in France reach much deeper than Paris though. Cities such as Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, and Nice are some of the other most popular destinations in the country. It is possible to live in any of these places for an extended period of time through a high school program in France, and each offers a smaller, less globalized feel than Paris. These are only naming a few of the possible locations for high school program in France, but really the whole country is wide open because there are so many high school programs available in France.
Popular Program Types
Most high school programs in France are offered over the summer and last from one to eight weeks (adventure programs are typically shorter than academic programs). Those who are particularly ambitious can also live in France for a full semester or academic year as part of an exchange program at an international school.
High School study abroad programs in France tend to be focused on learning about various aspects of French history, art, and culture. Many are structured to include classroom lessons mixed with interactive field trips to local museums, shows, and monuments. High school study abroad programs in France are often directed toward either a general education in the French culture or a more specialized focus of French culture, such as in cooking, music, or architecture.
Many high school programs in France also incorporate French language learning into the curriculum. While it is possible to join a high school program in France without any prior knowledge of the language, students of French will find the experience an incredibly valuable asset to their language acquisition.
Summer programs in France for high school students are a great opportunity to gain experience abroad without missing any high school activities during the academic year.
Anticipated Costs
France is a wealthy country and so costs of living, especially in big cities, such as Paris, can run up to be quite expensive for high school students. Transportation expenses and program fees will also add to the costs of high school programs in France. Just know, the program fees often go towards in-country support!
However, affordability need not be a concern if you truly have your mind set on traveling to France. Through there are a large variety of scholarship opportunities out there, and you can also create a crowdsource fundraiser with FundMyTravel to help you fund your trip.
Accommodations & Visas
Many high school students who travel to France choose to live in a homestay because of the opportunities this offers for total cultural immersion and language practice (plus the home cooked meals are sure nothing to complain about either!). Some high school programs in France will alternatively offer students the opportunity to live in dormitory style housing, depending on the location and structure of the program. These alternative housing options may give high school students the chance to meet more people their age. Either way students will be under steady supervision, so safety need not be a major concern.
Students coming from within the European Union will not have to apply for a visa to study abroad in France. The situation beyond Europe varies – students from most Western countries only will need a visa if they plan on staying for longer than three months, while students from many other countries may have to apply for a visa prior to entry. Research your visa requirements as early as possible to ensure you have time to apply for your visa. Check GoAbroad’s Embassy Directory to get more information about your visa requirements.
GoAbroad's Inside Scoop
Participating in a high school program in France will open your eyes to a different culture, create lasting memories with new friends from around the world, and look great on your college applications to boot. Language and cultural immersion will certainly be a challenge to work through, but by adapting to your new surroundings you will grow and mature in ways which will have your peers’ heads turning. Not only that, but you will be setting yourself apart from your peers in future college applications and job searches. Don’t be surprised if you fall in love with France now and hope to return again soon!
Yes, the Eiffel Tower should be on your list of must-sees, but don’t get blinded by the tourist destinations. Some of France’s charm falls in its small, winding streets, Saturday markets, and overall ambiance of French. Practice your language skills in your day-to-day activities. This will allow you to gain confidence and make mistakes with ease (because mistakes are part of learning a language!).
A great adventure awaits you, all that is left to do is get out there and make it happen!

I honestly was not prepared for the magnificence of that side of the world, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to travel with Bethel. It was the most amazing experience, and I could not have asked for a better program or chaperone to guide me the entire time!

The Beauty in Traveling and going Forth with Opportunities
July 31, 2026by: Zariyah Soto - United StatesAs my first study abroad traveling opportunity it was such a beautiful experience. Having been able to do it with TOCA was wholesome. They are so accommodating + welcoming with any concerns! Grateful!

A Wonderful Experience
July 30, 2026by: Grace De-Souza - United StatesMy first time abroad was through TOCA, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. My nerves were easily settled by the kind and understanding team that traveled with us. This trip was filled with fun activities along with amazing learning opportunities. From the organized activities to the individually planned hangouts, this trip is something I will never forget. I am extremely grateful I had the chance to experience this, and I hope future students have just as much fun!
Life-changing Experience
July 30, 2026by: Eduardo Perez ariza - United StatesAt the start of the program I was skeptical of going abroad. I heard stories from other students who did TOCA on how it was a life-changing experience. At first I thought it was an over exaggeration. But as time went on during my time in France I realized I began to change wholeheartedly as a person. I started to see the world in a much more colorful way and realized that I had reached a state of nirvana where I felt at peace with myself. Wether it was painting, going out with friends, or even being alone. I felt comfortable in my own skin for the first time in my life. I highly recommend to take the leap of faith and take this opportunity.

Risk
July 30, 2026by: Fatima Salgado - United StatesAt first I was very hesitant on going abroad and meeting new people because I was an introvert I was very to myself until. I took this opportunity because deep down I knew I wouldn’t get the same opportunity again and I don’t regret it I am so thankful of this amazing opportunity. It had brought me to be more social and make new friends that will last. It had made me be more open minded and that it’s okay to take risks or take any opportunity that comes your way because you may never get the same opportunity again.

An amazing time!
July 30, 2026by: Caden Clemmings - United StatesMy experience with TOCA was extremely memorable, and will stay with me for the rest of my life. The staff are so welcoming and kind, and do everything in their power to support every kid that attends the program. Their partnership with the Marchutz School in France provided students with an incredible opportunity to learn and study art, teaching skills that will continue to carry on.

Additionally, the school was amazing and so kind and helpful! What I was taught here, I can’t learn anywhere else at this age. It’s so astonishing I got to go there for two weeks! It’s been such an amazing time and I definitely recommend. Additionally, they kept my mom informed! Definitely parent and kid friendly alike. Loved the opportunity!

July 19, 2026by: Arianna Gear - United StatesProgram: Journey Through Western Europe
I loved going on the 2026 trip to Western Europe! It was amazing and helped me become more confident in myself and my abilities. I have learned how to navigate foreign countries and areas in which I know little about, which is very useful for my future. All of the food was delicious, and the experience was top-notch! I loved Europe, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget!
AFS(particularly in France) lacks support for students
July 11, 2026by: Mina Deschamps - United StatesProgram: AFS Intercultural Programs: High School Abroad in France
My time in France was absolutely beautiful, I loved it and I would do it again 100 times, just with a different organization. While I was in France, there was no support for harsh times and host family abuse/toxicity, Many other AFSers who came to france this year have said the same—changing families is insanely difficult because AFS takes the side of the family, leaving a lack of support for the student. On the other hand, I learned so much about myself on this program. I fell in love, I became fluent in French, I have a university program chosen already, this program has really made me fall in love with the world around me, and I will forever be grateful. I just wish AFS was there for me more (Sorry if the wording of this is confusing, i’m still getting used to speaking english) I will forever cherish this time I spent abroad!!!
An education experience like no other
February 19, 2026by: Zoe LordProgram: Fall Semester in Europe
My experience with MEI was life changing. I cannot recommend them enough. The teachers are some of the best I have encountered throughout high school and university. Every destination and experience enhances the curriculum, creating an education experience like no other.
One of the greatest opportunities and gift we could give him
February 18, 2026by: Funke SomefunWhen I heard about this academy from a friend, I was excited for the opportunity to send our Son on an experiential learning journey. Little did I know that it was going to be one of the greatest opportunities and gift we could give him. Our son went on Trek 3 Through Europe. The enrolment process was smooth, and Pam was always happy to answer any questions and direct to resources. As for the whole trip, it was a great investment of time and money. This opportunity resulted in our son completing his High School as early as February 2024 and gaining admission into the prestigious UBC Sauder School of Business for the 2024/25 academic year. MEI Academy not only teaches courses, it fosters character building while also providing a glimpse into our world. ‘The world is indeed our classroom.’ After hearing about the experience our daughter is looking forward to go on a journey with MEI as well.
I would take this opportunity again in a heartbeat
February 15, 2026by: Lauren NeilsonProgram: Fall Semester in Europe
Making the decision to attend MEI Academy is hands down one of the best decisions I have made. I attended the 2018 Adventure Down Under summer session and I loved it so much I signed up for the 2019 Kingdoms and Empires group for my second semester of grade 12. During these trips I learned a lot about myself and became more independent. The other students I met on these trips are still some of my best friends and I will always cherish the times we spent together. On top of this, the teachers educate you on much more than just academics. They help you reach outside of your comfort zone and support you as you learn more about yourself and the world around you. MEI Academy immensely helped me grow as an individual and prepared me to live away from home for University. I would take this opportunity again in a heartbeat!
An incomparable educational experience
February 15, 2026by: Claire SatterfieldDuring grade 11, I decided to go to Asia for my spring semester with MEI and transitioned to Europe in the fall of grade 12. This ‘reverse’ big year approach set me apart from my peers, yet I found myself enjoying it just as much. I chose to apply for MEI because I was looking for deeper knowledge than what was available at my local public schools. I went into it pretty blindly, not knowing anyone, as most of the students do. My high school experience has been anything but ordinary, as I have attended four different high schools, including MEI Academy. It was during the two MEI programs, where I discovered an incomparable educational experience. The teacher’s high expectations fueled my growth as a student, thinker, and peer. Coming from an online school, I initially lacked certain public speaking skills and certain social abilities. However, the immersive and supportive environment at MEI sparked my personal transformation. I came out of my programs, not only as a more articulate individual but also as someone who can easily speak for myself and confidently form friendships with people who I might not have connected with otherwise. One aspect of the program that particularly resonates with me to this day was the structured routine of our days, which was nothing like my life at home. Waking up each day surrounded by individuals who were equally as eager to embrace the new experiences was a breath of fresh air. From daily morning workouts in constantly changing locations to reflective writing and collaborative projects, I truly would not have found this anywhere else. Unlike a conventional school setting where teacher interaction is limited to the class period, with MEI I had constant engagement with both educators and students, creating meaningful relationships that extended far beyond the classroom. Not only did my relationships extend beyond the classroom, but so did my education. MEI stands out as a transformative educational experience. Something I had never experienced in a traditional classroom, but had the opportunity to learn on my MEI program was the blend of courses with real-world application. The academic skills –from public speaking to essay writing– that were taught during my time with MEI, I continue to actively apply to all of my courses at home. These are valuable skills that will continue to allow me to prosper as I begin post-secondary education. For those who want to broaden their horizons and grow as an individual and as a student, MEI Academy is the perfect place to do that. I wholeheartedly recommend these programs for anyone who is considering it. I would not be the same without this experience.
Still a core memory and an essential aspect of my education
February 13, 2026by: Alisha SassoI departed on MEI's big year in 2013/2014. Ten years later it is still a core memory and an essential aspect of my education. I continue to employ the values, experiences, and educational techniques gained during my experience in both day-to-day life, as well as professionally. I am forever grateful for my experience with MEI International Academy.
