Immersion and Dispersion: TOCA’s Plan for Us.

I entered TOCA as an unexperienced traveler — vaguely aware of french culture through media, such as artist like Cezzane — yet I immediately jumped at the opportunity unknowing of the multiplicity of personal values, cultural experiences, and artistic skills awaiting me. Best. Decision. Ever! From designing cakes in the provincial style in Aix-en-Province’s confectionary breeze to swimming in the bone-chilling Mediterranean ocean… I’ve truly never felt more alive! Of course, this is also because i was surrounded by similarly excited young people of color who weren’t afraid to try new things! And even after the program, we were still provided with ample support towards our goals of being International Learners and Explorers — paired with mentors who have plentiful experience, trips, and wise words of advice under their belt to share. All of this is to say… Merci, TOCA!

the (freezing) mediterranean I floated in for hours!my gorgeous cake with fresh berries, mint leaves, and lemon zest!finally my beautiful host mom, Christine's, rag-doll cat letuce! (don’t tell christine… but she was the real highlight of my trip… shh!)

A story Shakespeare couldn't write

My experience abroad actually starts the week of the day we were set to leave. There was a 3 day orientation in which we learned a lot about team building, but also more inwards focused activities thanks to TOCA's partnership with the Liverpool Foundation. While abroad, we were greeted with a whole host of new sights, smells, and ideas never once to be had in America. Many of us were introduced to a life abroad that we once had no interest in. But the heart of the journey lied in all the staff involved through the journey. The staff really left a resounding impact on the way I look at life and how I look ahead to the future of not only studying abroad, but also TOCA itself.

One Mr. Lamar Shambley, coming right up! (And me in the background)
