A Guide to Liberal Arts Degrees Abroad
Why Earn Liberal Arts Degrees Abroad
It’s one thing to watch documentaries about Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, flip through slides of paintings at the Louvre, and read textbook descriptions of different cultures around the world: it’s another thing to experience it! Imagine discussing philosophy and psychology on the same streets that Socrates walked down, or experiencing foreign economics and politics in your morning newspaper! Adventure is the best way to learn, so start your research for the best program and start your education.
Earning your degree at international liberal arts schools is especially valuable when you consider what you have studied and what you could study: culture. Every culture has a different history and outlook, so a degree abroad can give you a reading list of brand new books, diverse perspectives, and novel concepts. Adding an exotic spice to your degree (and no, ordering an Italian roast at your favorite cafe does not count) will enhance your studies, fuel your passion, and open up doors for travel, education, and careers.
Not only will your studies be improved by adding some suitcases to your school supplies, but your prospective career options afterwards as well! International experience never looks bad, and often gives you a leg up on the competition when it comes to resumes and interviews. Earning liberal arts degrees abroad also opens several doors for networking and opportunity, as the world is your playground. If you add a new language along the way, this advantage grows even higher!
Locations
Liberal arts is a diverse area of study, so it’s no wonder that there is an almost unending list of places to study in. Each location offers something special, so it’s important to consider what you’re interested in and where will be the best fit for you. There are no bad options, only better ones!
If the Norman conquest, da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and hellenistic philosophy has you swooning like Julius Caesar in Act I Scene II, look to western Europe for your university. Italy, England, and France are leaders in classical studies, with their histories rich in literature, history, and politics. Trips to museums, cathedrals, and other historic sights bring class lectures to life. Then there’s also the many Classic Tourist Photo opps: trying to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa, poking around Stonehenge, or slurping down a plate of escargots (nothing to be ashamed of here!). Germany and Switzerland provide similar classic studies, with their unique twists and a healthy dose of snow-sprinkled gingerbread.
For some liberal fun outside of the European continent, Buenos Aires provides a splendid background for anthropology focuses, especially when complemented with weekend getaways to pyramid temples and Spanish readings of local authors. There’s also tango and yerba mate to help with cultural studies, so don’t shy away from the immersion.
There’s more to liberal arts than Aristotle and Shakespeare though, so don’t discount programs in places like Thailand. Haikus or tribal rituals might be more your flavor, which garners a look into Asia for programs that extend beyond western focuses. If your interests lean more towards anthropology, ethnic studies, and global communication, grab your backpack and head into the minority jungles for an adventure of a lifetime.
Liberal Arts Degree Programs
Academic foci and liberal arts degrees vary from place to place, so it’s important to identify your needs and find the right program for your interests. Whether your heart beats to history studies or philosophical musings, it’s good to see what you’d like to focus on, and then dive in.
At the undergraduate level, an international liberal arts degree is broad and varied. It typically requires a variety of courses and study focuses, from language to literature and politics to anthropology. Master and doctoral degrees tend to require a specialization within the college of liberal arts, such as Chinese literature or African anthropology, although it’s still possible to achieve as a more general topic at a higher level.
Before earning your international liberal arts degree, it’s important to identify the culture, style, and information focus of your university destination. Liberal arts encompasses a variety of topics: sociology, the sciences, mathematics, literature, and more. Depending on your focus, you may need to do additional studies outside the classroom, such as an internship for political science or a recital for music and dance.
Starting at liberal arts schools, even abroad, is relatively easy, as it generally requires only a degree for the level below whatever you are seeking (high school for undergraduate for master’s and so on). Unless you are looking into earning a degree in a country that speaks a language different from your native language, there are no additional requirements or qualifications for a liberal arts degree (and even the language requirement isn’t set in stone). As long as you have a passion for the field, it will be no time at all before you’re dancing across the graduation stage like a Monet ballerina!
Benefits and Challenges
Novelty. By going abroad, you’re opening your scope to a range of new insights and materials. This will greatly increase your knowledge and widen your perspective, but it can be initially difficult as you may have to play catch-up in comparison to locals that are more used to the subject area: your secondary education of To Kill a Mockingbird may or may not line up to the original Don Quixote. Take this in stride, seek help where you need it, and offer your own background perspectives to gain a broader education than anyone else around you!
Connections. Surrounding yourself with the material you’re studying will invariably make everything stick and connect at a deeper level than being at home, which is very valuable to a liberal arts degree. On top of that, the friends, professors, advisors, and more that you will meet and make along the way are what makes the experience truly memorable. With all those people, you’re likely to learn as much during your coffee breaks with classmates as you will during class lectures!
Earning degrees in liberal arts abroad gives you a step above the competition, as well as some amazing travel stories and a deeper understanding of your degree. As you gather your many books and reading materials for your studies, also consider St. Augustine’s perspective that “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” Reach out beyond the known and go abroad for your degree!

Invaluable experience
April 20, 2026by: SashaProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
I completed the MA in Contemporary Art in London. My time at Sotheby’s gave me both an entry point into and an understanding of the global art world. During my Master’s studies, I not only gained an incredible amount of academic knowledge, but was also introduced to the London art world and began building my career. In my work, I look at artworks all the time, and having the ability to critically assess and understand them is very important. The skill of visual analysis, as well as developing an eye, was a major focus during my studies, and I am glad that the tutors paid so much attention to it. We were constantly looking at different works and were expected to discuss them. We were also encouraged to go to exhibitions. You learn this skill as a student and then continue to refine it during your professional life.

April 08, 2026by: ElenaProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
I had been wanting to study art history at Sotheby’s Institute for a long time and had always been drawn to the Institute’s MA Contemporary Art. I eventually started with a short course, which gave me a solid base and the chance to delve into a subject I’d always been passionate about. I instantly loved the Institute’s teaching approach—placing students in front of artworks, encouraging dialogue, and connecting theory with real experience. After my initial course. I truly believe I could not have received a better education. I constantly recommend the program to others! The MA not only provided me with in-depth knowledge of contemporary art, but it also strengthened my critical thinking, offered a clear structure of how the art world functions, and introduced me to the wide range of professional paths within it.

April 05, 2026by: LauraProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
I did the MA Art Business at the London campus because of its course reputation, faculty, and the depth and breadth of the program. I was looking for a course that would give me a broad but thorough introduction to the commercial art world. The MA Art Business program at Sotheby’s Institute inspired me to explore contemporary art, dream big, and nurture my confidence in international cross-cultural networking, which gave me the encouragement to find my path in the art business world. I would recommend this program to those with an interest in working in the commercial art world and collaborating with art industry players or to those who have an interest in collecting art.
It was a springboard into the multifaceted world of luxury.
April 03, 2026by: KarlaProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
My time at Sotheby’s Institute was deeply enriching, and a big part of that was thanks to the incredible professors. Their expertise, support, and ability to connect theory with real-world examples made the learning experience truly engaging and inspiring. I loved how the MA Luxury Business program covered a wide range of luxury sectors—from hospitality and jewelry to fashion and art—and explored the evolving definition of luxury across cultures and time periods. Being in London really enhanced the experience, as the city itself is a global hub for art, fashion, and luxury. I especially appreciated the immersive learning. We had the opportunity to visit incredible places like the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, Rathfinny Wine Estate in Sussex, Van Cleef & Arpels School in Paris, and Mandarin Oriental in Milan. These experiences offered invaluable insight into how luxury is created, curated, and communicated in different contexts. In addition to the site visits, we were also joined by a range of guest speakers from across the luxury sectors, including areas like jewelry and hospitality, who shared valuable insights into their careers, challenges, and lessons learned—adding a real-world dimension that made the learning feel even more relevant and inspiring. I also really enjoyed taking electives from other programs—my course on art forgery, for example, was especially eye-opening and gave me a new lens through which to view authenticity in the luxury space.
The Buchmann Mehta School of Music
June 11, 2025by: Silva Babloian - RussiaProgram: International Undergraduate Programs at Tel Aviv University
Studying Harp at the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music at Tel Aviv University has been an amazing experience. As a performance student, I'm surrounded by passionate, highly talented musicians and faculty who push me to grow both technically and artistically. I have had an excellent teacher Julia Rovinsky and Sophie Baird-Daniel. One of the highlights of my time here has been working with Professor Alin Gabay, my ear training teacher. She takes a unique, personal approach with each student, really tuning in to our individual needs and helping us expand our listening and musical skills. The atmosphere at the Buchmann-Mehta School is both intense and supportive. We’re given opportunities to perform frequently—both solo and ensembles — in the orchestra. Living in Tel Aviv has been an experience One of my favorite activities is going to the concerts at The Israeli Philharmonic. As students of the Buchmann-Mehta School, we have special access, and getting to hear world-class performances is a constant source of inspiration. If you’re serious about music and looking for a place that combines rigorous training with a warm, collaborative community in one of the most exciting cities in the world, TAU is an amazing choice!
My experience at TAU
June 09, 2025by: laura serur - BrazilProgram: International Undergraduate Programs at Tel Aviv University
Doing a double degree in Management and Liberal Arts has been one of the most exciting and unexpected parts of my academic journey so far. On the Management side, I’m learning how the business world works, how to lead teams, make strategic decisions, and think like an entrepreneur. It’s practical, fast-paced, and gives me tools I know I’ll use no matter where I end up. At the same time, through the Liberal Arts program, I’m majoring in Communications and minoring in Middle Eastern Studies, which has taken me in a completely different (but equally meaningful) direction. Communications has taught me to think about how we tell stories, how we connect, and how media shapes the way we see the world. It’s made me more thoughtful about the words I use and how I express myself. My Middle Eastern Studies minor has been eye-opening. It’s helped me understand the region I live in on a deeper level, its history, complexity, and beauty. Some of the most meaningful classes I’ve taken were from that department. What I enjoy most is how these two degrees balance each other. One is about skills and action, the other about understanding and perspective. Together, they’ve made me more curious, more open-minded, and more prepared, not just for a job, but for the world. It hasn’t always been easy juggling both, but I wouldn’t trade it. It’s helped me grow in ways I never expected.
My experience in the Dual BA program with TAU and Columbia U
June 08, 2025by: Maya Koshet - PortugalProgram: International Undergraduate Programs at Tel Aviv University
As a student in the dual degree program between Tel Aviv University and Columbia University, majoring in Psychology and Entrepreneurship, I’ve found this journey to be incredibly enriching and full of unexpected discoveries. One of the aspects I appreciate most at TAU is the freedom to choose many of my courses. With such a wide variety of classes available, I’ve been able to explore areas beyond my major that have truly surprised me. For instance, I unexpectedly fell in love with Middle Eastern Studies. The professors in this department are some of the most knowledgeable and passionate I’ve encountered—arguably more so than anywhere else in the world. Even taking just a few courses has deeply expanded my understanding of the region, and I highly recommend other students explore this area, even if it’s not part of their main degree. In Entrepreneurship, most of the professors bring incredible real-world experience—many are founders, investors, or deeply embedded in Israel’s startup ecosystem, which makes the learning feel very practical. My Psychology professors are also insightful and engaging. While English isn’t the first language for many professors across departments, they consistently manage to lead high-quality, meaningful courses that are easy to follow and valuable. Not every class has been a hit—some of the required core courses haven’t resonated with me, and there are aspects of the academic structure I don’t always enjoy. But overall, it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow. The campus is a major plus. With Tel Aviv’s amazing weather, there’s a constant positive energy. There are tons of great spots to grab coffee, eat, study, or relax in the sun. As an international student, I’d love to see newer, more modern classrooms—but the overall environment is vibrant and welcoming. In short, the dual degree program is a perfect mix of academic depth and student life. It’s a serious education, but also a fun, global experience I’m really grateful to be part of.

Student life at TAU is vibrant and engaging, filled with diverse activities and events that foster a sense of community among peers. From practical to theory
June 17, 2024by: Jon - EnglandProgram: International Undergraduate Programs at Tel Aviv University
Before starting my first semester at TAU, I was fighting in Gaza for two months. I had so much free time with nothing to do but sit and think. Everything that happened in this apocalyptic suburbia seemed to be of global significance. I wanted to act perfectly at all times. But how can I know what acting perfectly is? I was trapped for these months with 11 other men. All Israeli. Some religious, some secular, some right wing and some left. Some people praised me for actions I took or refused to took while others saw me as an obstacle in the way of their goals. I continued to sit in dark rooms. Not fearing for me life but understanding the possibility that a small logistical issue by someone I don’t know could lead to the obliteration of this room. And the questions I sat and asked myself were much bigger than the war. Questions of life, ethics, morality, the direction of the human race, the importance of war if it has one and whether or not we can prove it to be beneficial at times or not. Weather or not we can know for certain that something is ever beneficial. Coming to TAU, I left the war zone but the questions stayed. And now while I don’t have endless time and a dark room to think. I have a professor, and a bright room, and a library of infinite resources to help me form my opinions. I have class mates who want to explain their perspectives to me and want to have their ideologies challenged. I have been promoted from the front line to the war cabinet. Now I can find my true beliefs before I act on them. And I have a history of experiences to learn from. At TAU I feel safe but challenged. Academia is aggressively competitive and debating the existence of good and bad in modernity can feel like an intense fight. But here is where I feel most, I can get real and meaningful experiences through discourse and I don’t need to be on the verge of death to experience it. I can find meaning through exploration of ideas and as I form new opinions I understand my old ones change and my new ones may too in the near future. This university allows for me to grow and celebrate existence. I am thankful to have this experience and to have it ahead of me for the next few years too. It is peaceful yet intense and this move from practical to theory is an important part of my returning to ‘normal life’ if there is or ever will be such a thing.

My experience in Tel Aviv University
June 04, 2024by: Anastasia Mikunis - IsraelProgram: International Undergraduate Programs at Tel Aviv University
Three months ago, I embarked on a new adventure, moving to Israel to live and study. While I had visited Israel before, this was my first time in Tel Aviv. I remember the moment I first saw the sea; it was nothing short of breathtaking. Coming from Moscow, Russia, where the sea is a rare sight, the idea of seeing it every day felt almost surreal. Tel Aviv is a lively city, and I quickly grew to appreciate its unique charm and energy. I am currently pursuing a degree in the Management and Liberal Arts program. This program has truly captivated me with its wide range of courses, particularly those focused on management. Making friends here was easy, I quickly bonded with my classmates, who come from various backgrounds. Despite our differences, we easily find common ground and enjoy each other’s company. The campus itself left a lasting impression on me. I was absolutely fascinated by its size, the lush green grass, and the abundance of flowers. Every aspect of the campus seems designed to enhance the student experience. The vibrant and supportive atmosphere on campus makes it a wonderful place to study and grow. As a Jewish woman, studying in Israel has a special significance for me. It feels like a homecoming, connecting with my heritage and community in profound ways. TAU has offered me more than just an education; it has given me the chance to immerse myself in a new culture and form lifelong friendships.
Where Business Meets Culture (with a Beach Break!)
June 04, 2024by: Yelyzaveta Liashenko - UkraineProgram: International Undergraduate Programs at Tel Aviv University
Being a second-year Management and Liberal Arts student (Psychology and Digital Culture and Communication track) at Tel Aviv University (TAU) has been an eye-opening experience. It's the blend of business know-how and exploring the world shaped by technology and culture. Classes are engaging – our management professors combine theory with real-world case studies, making the lessons relevant. Meanwhile, the psychology and digital culture courses delve into the "why" behind online trends and how technology impacts us. It's fascinating to see these seemingly different fields come together. TAU's campus is a hive of activity. One minute you're discussing marketing strategies in a lecture hall, the next you're grabbing coffee with classmates at the cafeteria. The mix of cultures is incredible – I've learned so much from my international peers, and the professors encourage lively discussions that bridge different perspectives. Living in Tel Aviv is an experience in itself. The city is young and energetic, and there's always something happening. Sometimes, after a long day of classes, I head straight to the beach for a sunset view or just a walk with friends. It's the perfect way to unwind and recharge. The workload can be intense, but TAU offers great support systems. There's academic advising, workshops on managing stress, and student clubs for every interest. I recently joined the theatre club, which is a fantastic way to meet like-minded people outside of class. Sure, juggling classes and the city's vibrant energy can be tricky, but that's part of the TAU experience. You learn to be adaptable, resourceful, and most importantly, to embrace the adventure. If you're looking for a program that challenges you intellectually while offering a dynamic social scene, all set in a city that never sleeps, then TAU's Management and Liberal Arts program might be the perfect fit for you.
