Medical Healthcare Program in Arusha

Take part in a Medical Healthcare program in Tanzania. Most hospitals and clinics only accept certified professionals or interns in the healthcare/medical sector. This program gives you the opportunity to have hands-on medical experience in one of the hospitals in Arusha. You may also get the chance to work at community clinics and rural health posts. Interns spend most of their work period working as an assistant to a healthcare professional or doctor. Their responsibilities vary with their skills, previous experience, and education. Program participants must have health care certification, physician's or nursing credentials, or paramedic or EMT certification. Medical interns who do not have credentials are not qualified to join due to potential liability risks.

AFYA (MEDICAL PROGRAM)

Volunteers on the Medical project help to provide care in these areas and work alongside local medical professionals, gaining an understanding of the healthcare system in Tanzania. Volunteers work in medical clinics and hospitals and are placed according to previous experience and training. Some hospitals and clinics include departments, such as Laboratory Testing, Pharmacy, Maternity and Family Planning, Radiology, Ultrasound, and Dentistry, and volunteers who have an interest in any of these areas are asked to make a note in their application. The key attributes for a successful Medical volunteer are initiative, enthusiasm, and readiness to work in basic facilities with limited resources. Volunteers generally shadow local doctors and provide basic patient care. Procedurally, they must comply with the Tanzania Healthcare System, and most volunteers cannot communicate directly with patients due to language barriers. Volunteers need to understand that a key role in this project is simple observation, and it is unlikely that you will be involved in operations or independent tasks.

Clinical Exposure, Mentorship, and Growth Through IMA’s Pre-Medicine Internship

Program: Global Health & Pre-Medicine Internships Abroad | IMA

10

This program allowed me to grow as an ethical leader in my community, a leader who leads by example. My experiences at Coast General will forever shape my perspective on health care and scarce resources in healthcare settings. While in Kenya, I received constant support from the IMA staff. One specific example that stands out to me was when I was left in the lab by one of the CCC doctors. I called Hilda for support, and even though she was not working that day, she immediately sent Dr. Shaziim to support me. In the residences, the mentors would always be looking out for me, making sure I was healthy and happy as I completed the program. One specific moment in Internal Medicine that stood out to me was when I did rounds in the women's ward with Dr. Shaziim and the gastroenterologist. Dr. Shaziim incorporated my previous knowledge of HIV from the CCC into explanations to help me learn and build upon my knowledge. Thanks to their efforts to involve me in their diagnosis process, I now want to pursue gastroenterology.
