A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Nursing
Best Locations
Volunteer projects in nursing range from working in remote areas where basic medical care can be scarce, to locations with cutting-edge work on infectious diseases. You can help pediatric patients, geriatric patients, and everyone in between. Some of the best places for nursing volunteer programs abroad are:
Vietnam. Nursing volunteer projects abroad are plentiful here. Vietnam is a popular destination for volunteering with nursing, and offers support positions for those who might be new to the field. Typical opportunities would include supporting post-surgical medical teams and visiting with sick children who are hospital-bound. The larger hospitals, especially those in Ho Chi Minh City, have English-speaking medical teams so knowledge of Vietnamese is not required (but those interested in learning the language will be able to do so).
Kenya. Volunteering for nursing in this African country could mean working with skilled medical teams in refugee camps in Nairobi, assisting with national women’s health initiatives, or providing much-needed support to orphanages and children’s welfare programs. If you’re willing to challenge yourself in an environment where resources can occasionally be difficult to secure, you will find that nursing volunteer projects abroad in Kenya will test your skills and grow your experience.
What Else You Need to Know
When you think of volunteering with nursing abroad, you might consider at-risk populations, opportunities in your area of specialization, or just somewhere you want to explore! All of these are excellent points of origin for your placement search, but there are also some things you might want to keep in mind:
Popular projects. The areas of greatest need might vary according to location, but one of the most popular projects for volunteer abroad in nursing programs involves working with HIV/AIDS. If your specialization is infectious disease, or you have a strong pull to help educate while you treat, you’ll find no shortage of places to serve.
Professional benefits. No matter where you might find yourself, global healthcare experience will give you a competitive advantage over those who chose to only stay close to home. The decision to volunteer abroad in nursing could be just the thing that shapes your career!
Be a humanitarian. Getting to help others while building your own skill-set drives most volunteer abroad participants. You get to treat disease and help others create health. It’s easy to see why there are so many incredible options for you to choose from!
GoAbroad’s Inside Scoop for Nursing Volunteers Abroad
There are some truly great reasons to pursue nursing volunteering opportunities abroad! You get to explore new places, learn new languages, gain a new perspective, and add to your knowledge base and experience in ways that will show any future employer that you’re passionate, hard-working, and enterprising. You will also gain a competitive advantage in a field that continues to specialize as our health system expands to include more medical, environmental, and technological impact points on wellness.
Make sure to take excellent care of yourself as well while volunteering for nursing. Explore the best medical protocol for departure preparations for yourself. For example, do you need specific immunizations or boosters to prepare yourself? Are there cultural customs that might impact your ability to best serve the population you seek to treat? Will your volunteer abroad opportunity provide you with options for credits with your home organization? Finally, remember that each program and each location is different, so do plenty of research, ask plenty of questions, and when you arrive make sure you stay well-connected to your team.
Let’s Do This
So, if you’re ready to pack your scrubs and a good pair of comfortable shoes, it’s time to start narrowing your research to the important details, such as where, when, and for how long you want to travel abroad for your nursing volunteering opportunity. The world (and your next adventure) awaits! And just think, by pursuing volunteer projects in nursing abroad, you can use your skills to help you see—and potentially change—the world.

Planning to Return
August 29, 2026by: Kelly Straub - United StatesProgram: Volunteer in Medical in Ghana
Frankadua, Ghana, holds a special place in my heart. Not only was I fully immersed in Ghanaian culture, I also made true and lasting friends. The staff at IVHQ welcomed me from the moment I got out of the van, and they go out of their way to ensure safety and comfort. Every meal is homemade with care and thought. The wound outreach is incredible. We may not be completely changing a patient's life, but rather we learn and realize that we are part of something much bigger: a global effort to help treat those with severe wounds. The volunteers you meet are inspiring. Everyone has the same mindset of helping others, and we all got along swimmingly. I cannot wait to return and see the kids grow and visit with friends again.

It’s and incredible experience, I would totally recommend it
August 28, 2026by: Andrea Funes - SpainStaying in a local house is something you have to experience at least once in life, also have the ability to see how life works in another country and the local people, is an amazing way to find another version of yourself, and learn how you can live the life with “pura vida”. It was also too beautiful the volunteering with the kids, you are always welcome by them and they are expecting you with a lots of love and happiness. The only thing I don’t like about this experience is saying goodbye and had to come back home. Also I recommend takes some tours because you get to know better this beautiful country!! (Specially Nauyaca Waterfall tour if you like risks)

My experience in Cusco was such an amazing time. The people and atmosphere were amazing. Only after a short while this place and these people became a second home and family. The dental program was a great experience especially for a pre-dental student, you learn so much and meet so many great doctors, great for people who are ready for hands-on experience, learning, and giving a helping hand. I have already planned my return and can't wait to explore more of the programs that Maximo has to offer!

This experience changed my life for the best!
August 19, 2026by: Jimena Amaro Cordova - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects pushed me far beyond what I expected, taking me from supporting program logistics to independently running counseling sessions and managing my own client caseload within just a few months. I was trusted with real responsibility early on, from leading a group of 45 adult learners on my own to adapting a therapeutic intervention on short notice for an urgent client referral, and that trust taught me more about clinical work and resilience than I could have learned in a classroom. This experience confirmed that clinical psychology, particularly cross-cultural and community-based care, is exactly the path I want to pursue.

My Volunteering Experience in Costa Rica
August 15, 2026by: Noemi VitaliniMy Volunteering Experience in Costa Rica My volunteering experience in Costa Rica was amazing and unforgettable. I had the opportunity to work with children, and I really enjoyed spending time with them. different countries and made new friends. We worked together to plan activities and help the children, which was a very rewarding experience. During my free time, I explored Costa Rica and visited beautiful waterfalls. The nature was incredible, and I had so much fun. I would definitely recommend this experience to anyone who wants to help others, meet new people, discover a new culture, and have an amazing adventure. It was a fantastic experience that I will never forget!
It was a great opportunity to get to know better one of the islands in the Philippines.
August 14, 2026by: Seiralyn Alexandra Pasia - PhilippinesProgram: Global Health in the Philippines
I joined the CFHI Program, Global Health in the Philippines for 4 weeks, during the month of July, 2026 and I received the Friends of the Philippines scholarship. To be able to join a program such as this was an honor for me. It was a wonderful journey, with a great group of people to be with. CFHI has provided plenty for us during the course of the program and made sure that we were able to soak in the Philippines' beauty, culture, and healthcare. As a Filipino, I appreciate how we got to share our first-hand experiences to our companions from abroad. One of the students with us was also studying medicine, and we appreciated how we were using almost the same materials for our respective degrees. It did not matter whether she was studying in the US, or we were studying in the Philippines, although some information might be tweaked, for example, for diseases endemic to our countries. The girls we were with for the program were just the loveliest of people to be with, along with the local communities that we went to for the program. Our group went to the municipality of Torrijos in Marinduque. During our stay at the municipality, we were not only exposed to the RHU (Rural Health Unit), but because they had an ongoing Barangay Caravan, we also were able to explore different places in the municipality. As an aspiring physician here in the Philippines, it was a great experience to be able to shadow local doctors in the area, knowing that I would be doing the same thing in the future. We got tips on how to talk to patients, how to interact with the locals, and most importantly, how to handle medicine in areas far from the capital. It was a sad realization to hear that the municipality lacked equipment for crucial diagnosis, but we knew that the doctors there are doing their best of their capabilities to provide care for the people despite the disadvantage. Dr. Gellie Ocampo, our local preceptor made sure that we were well taken care of while we were staying there at the island. Ma'am Joan Azares, and her daughter Marnie Azares took us in as guests at their house, and they could not have been more hospitable. To them, we are most grateful for ensuring that we have a roof above our heads and meals to eat that they so lovingly prepared. Before we even got to the island, Ma'am Anabelle Rioflorido made sure that we were safe on the journey from Manila to the homestay in Marinduque. Finally, I would also like to share my gratitude to Dr. Paulo Medina, and Ms. Mae for making sure that the whole program would be smooth and there would not be any mishaps. I am just so immensely happy to be able to participate in such a program, and I hope CFHI is able to continue giving scholarships for deserving students to get in the program. All the best for Child Family Health International!
