Program Overview

Volunteer at a health clinic in the Philippines and help augment support to understaffed and underfunded health clinics in rural towns outside Tacloban City. This volunteer project is ideal for volunteers looking to experience the Philippines' healthcare industry or implement their professional medical skills in a rewarding environment. Rural Health Unit clinics serve as the only source of free healthcare for impoverished communities in rural towns around Tacloban City. It is at these clinics where one doctor and a handful of nurses have the sole responsibility of looking after a community of thousands of people while at the same time having only a limited number of resources at their disposal. Clinics benefit from volunteer medical professionals and students. Duties vary by qualification and may include taking vitals, medical history, vaccinations, surgery, delivery, and medical screenings. Services provided at the clinic; outreach services to outlying areas. The initiative is a major trait that volunteers need to possess to participate in this project.

Rural Health Clinic - Pastrana

Volunteering with the healthcare team at a personal and community level was a great experience. From the moment I arrived I worked directly with patients. The majority of patients presented with low acuity ailments and many mother's brought their children in for weight and growth measurements. From wound care to vital signs, vaccinations to observing physician consultation, I was able to cover nearly all aspects of the small clinic. The staff allowed me to work under my own scope of practice, always making sure I felt comfortable completing tasks. The staff went out of their way to welcome me, spending time to teach me useful words and phrases in the local dialect, Wary Wary, which helped me connect with the patients on a greater level. Overall, this was a great way to obtain patient contact hours, connect with the locals and an unforgettable cultural experience.
