A Guide to Computer Science Internships Abroad in the United States
Popular locations
With an international population of citizens from every other country in the world—not to mention stunning landscapes, freedom to travel from state to state, and several distinct geographical (and social) climates—there are many reasons for taking advantage of all that this country has to offer when you consider computer science internships for foreigners in the United States. There are also some great, practical reasons that someone with the goal of securing a competitive internship in computer science would look to the U.S., as it’s currently home to some of the top tech towns in terms of research, production, and innovation.
Silicon Valley (AKA the southern Bay Area of San Francisco, California). You can’t consider your list of possible computer science internships for foreigners in the United States complete without exploring the options in Silicon Valley. Since the first wireless telegraph transmission in 1899, San Francisco has been known as a center for technology, communication, education, and innovation—leading the way in computer science and technology development since the 1970s. With easy access to the Pacific Ocean, and a truly international port, the Bay Area has a rich history of international trade, a global food community, and a progressive political climate.
Austin, Texas. The capital city of Texas, Austin is the fastest-growing large city in the United States. Referred to as the “Silicon Hills” since the 1990s, when a large influx of computer and technology companies set up shop, Austin also offers a rich and vibrant food and music scene, a strong sense of pride in local businesses, and an active community with public safety and public access as high priorities. The cost of living is affordable, as well—housing is about 17% higher than the national average, but most other expenses, like food, utilities, and transportation fall at or below the cost for comparable cities in the rest of the country.
Madison, Wisconsin. This mid-sized, midwestern city is currently in the midst of a transition from an almost exclusively government and university-based employment community to one of the most affordable tech-friendly cities in the United States. Consistently ranking high on all kinds of “best of” lists, Madison offers natural beauty (with its lakes, parks, and bike trails), great restaurants, and a cost of living that is 2.5% lower than the national average. While companies like Google and Microsoft have made outposts in Madison, there are also numerous makerspace and hackerspace communities that create plenty of opportunities for computer science interns to enjoy their work with other like-minded people outside of the workplace, as well.
Everything else you need to know about computer science internships in the United States
Cost of living. The cost of living in the United States varies from very expensive (typically it’s housing that is the greatest expense in the higher-priced cities) to incredibly affordable. The trick to finding the right place for your budget for an internship in computer science will involve you researching the focus and size of the company you wish to work for as you consider the cities and states in which these companies offer internships. The most important thing to do is research, so that you’re guaranteed to find the perfect place for you.
Accommodations. While housing is already a hot topic in the consideration for cost of living comparisons, you’ll also want to think about the kind of accommodations you’re looking for. For example, even with a very generous (or even free) housing stipend for some cities (like those in and around the Bay Area or New York City), you’re likely only going to find a very small studio apartment. However, if you’re willing to venture to smaller cities, or even to more sprawling metropolitan areas (often home to data centers and company campuses due to the tax and real estate savings), you might find that you could rent an entire house with a garden and a view for a fraction of what you would spend on that city studio.
Visas. International students and recent graduates seeking internships in the United States require a specialized visa (known as a J-1 Visa). As part of your application process, you will also need to prove your intention to return to your home country following the completion of your internship. There are fifteen different categories of eligibility for J-1 Visas, of which thirteen are privately funded programs. Make sure you connect with the appropriate embassy contacts very early in your exploratory process so that you’re able to have all of the paperwork in order as you move forward with your internship application process.
Safety. In terms of public safety, as a whole, the United States is a reasonably safe country; there are some communities that are so close-knit that people report that they don’t even lock their doors at night, while there are some areas where poverty, homelessness, gang activity, and drug-related crimes pose a threat to public safety. As with any other country, it’s important to do your research and not take any unnecessary risks. Make sure you connect with the community liaisons at your internship sites and find out about transportation and neighborhood organizations that are available to help you get familiar with your surroundings. In general, use common sense and don’t do anything that would make yourself a target in an unfamiliar place.

Thank you to the program; I was able to travel overseas for a good time, in the United States, where I met amazing people!. The culture overseas is very wide, as there is not only 1 culture; there are many. I worked with people from Mexico, Nicaragua, the United States, Africa, etc. I made good friends from whom I learnt more aspects of living in the United States, plus the different ideas conveyed in a way of living. Also, most of the things that I learned back in my school days, I'm glad that I can apply them to real-world scenarios in material science, management, etc. Sharing the same room with people whos carriers are +20 years of experience and learning from them at the company was the most exciting adventure, as you not only acquire new knowledge, but you are also able to provide new perspectives with what you have learned in the past, plus having a new framework on how to handle things. The whole experience was amazing to me.

Living outside your hometown can be scary sometimes as is not something that you do everyday, or maybe you haven't had the chance to leave your house or small town for longer than 1 week. This was a great experience and journey for me as i had the chance to apply what I have learn back on my school days plus learning more not only from my personal knowledge about industry, machinery, people. Nonthless, this wasnt the only fun part, I was able to meet and live into another work culture, changing schdules working on different areas, experience different traditions. I like to tell and hear stories, fortunately USA, is full of stories from past present and future, with different people, some of them got here for work, improving life and I think I like that vision of changing your scenario for a better one, in which you can learn about other and about yourself.

A transformative internship in New York: Film, Marketing, and Cultural Growth
September 28, 2025by: Carlos Jose Lopez Tort - MexicoProgram: Internships in New York
My internship in New York with The Intern Group has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. I worked at BQE Media, creating cinematic-quality content for restaurants and brands, and gained valuable insights into digital marketing and storytelling. Beyond the office, I volunteered at Rooftop Films as an official photographer, attended cultural events across the city, and even joined a 48-Hour Film Project with filmmakers from NYU. These opportunities pushed me out of my comfort zone, expanded my professional network, and helped me grow as a filmmaker and as a person. Living and working in one of the most creative cities in the world gave me independence, confidence, and a global perspective that I will carry throughout my career.

As a youth leader passionate about Quality Education (SDG 4), I have actively worked to create inclusive learning opportunities in my community. I organize community study groups and skill-building workshops, especially for girls and marginalized youth, to bridge educational gaps. By collaborating with local schools and NGOs, we provide mentorship and access to learning materials, fostering a supportive environment that empowers young people to reach their potential. Moving forward, I plan to launch digital literacy programs to equip youths with critical skills for the future workforce, ensuring no one is left behind in our fast-changing world. Through these efforts, I aim to inspire sustainable growth by nurturing informed, confident young leaders who will drive positive change in Kano and beyond.
Very beneficial despite shortcomings
August 12, 2025by: Zach Galitzin - United StatesI found Beyond Academy to be a super helpful experience for both my social life and career. Through my internship, I have a better idea of what I want to do and decided on the industry I’d pursue. Additionally, I met many great, unique people that taught me a lot about ambition and work-life balance. However, the program was sloppy and unorganized at times. In the beginning, I was urged to pay a lot of money before I met with the instructor, which I didn’t feel comfortable with. While I got lucky with my internship, my friends got internships where they didn’t really do anything all day, and one of them had to go to an apartment for her office. I think putting in more effort to screen companies as well as trying to get better internships would go a long way. Despite the shortcomings, I want to stress that the program was a great learning opportunity, and I feel more ambitious and self-sufficient as a result.
Hi Zach, Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful review. We’re really glad to hear that your internship helped clarify your career goals and that you built meaningful friendships and connections along the way. It’s wonderful to see that you left the program feeling more ambitious and self-sufficient. We’re sorry to hear that aspects of the program felt unorganized at times. To make sure interns feel supported throughout, we have structured feedback opportunities in place during the program. These check-ins are designed so our team can step in quickly if an internship placement isn’t meeting expectations. We always wish more interns made use of this support while on-program so we could address concerns in real time. On payments, we do have a clear payment plan that is communicated to every intern at the start of their enrollment. We appreciate your note here, as it reminds us how important it is to ensure this process always feels transparent and comfortable. Thank you again for your review, we’re so glad your overall experience in New York was both memorable and impactful. All the best, -The Beyond Academy Team
