In today's world, aquaculture has taken on new importance as the world's fish stocks are devastated by industrial fishing practices. This means that farmed fish species are increasing to meet demands. Interns participate in all aspects of prawn farming with an established business. They discover how fishermen-turned-farmers nurture their crops to maturity. They also work with local aquarium scientists, discovering how these ventures relieve the pressure on the local marine environment, and help to conserve marine life and coastlines with correct management techniques.

GVI offers a program that starts with a 12-week marine conservation expedition, helping you to develop your understanding of marine conservation and to further or establish your scuba diving skills. You will learn how to live and work with a research team in a remote environment and attain base skills essential for your internship the following 12 weeks. During the next phase, you will undertake your PADI Divemaster course, take further advanced training courses, shadow GVI staff, and assist with the running of the expedition. At the end of the 12-week placement, qualifying interns will either be offered paid or unpaid work with GVI or with one of our local partners. Cape Town is one of the strongest and most developed cities in Africa, but outside of the major industrial centers, South Africa still suffers from a severe lack of development, with many people still living below the poverty line. Participating in an international development internship here is a great way to make an effort to help tip this balance. Interns work with a variety of NGOs situated in areas around Cape Town. The organizations are non-profit foundations that aim to empower, support, and enhance the surrounding communities. The foundations offer a variety of services and programs such as life and leadership skills, food campaigns, soup kitchens, sewing projects, sports programs linked to awareness education, and training support projects. Some of the foundations also focus on issues of unemployment, crime, domestic violence, drugs, alcohol abuse, prostitution, teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, and general health.

Students interested in the art and science of field botany and restoration ecology now have a rare opportunity. Those selected will receive practical hands-on experience in vegetation ecology and species-at-risk surveys from a qualified professional and expert botanist. Botanical work will focus on vegetation surveys along the length of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. The project will culminate in the publication of a book. The survey methodology will consist of hiking trail systems, camping, and driving between sites. Work takes place primarily over weekend dates, not including statutory holidays. Eligibility for this program includes: • Enthusiasm with a sense of humor; • comfortable hiking and working in small groups; • able to work independently and as part of a team; and • a strong communicator with the ability to take notes. Intern Botanists are asked to commit for a minimum of once per month from May to October, approximately 4 – 8 hours per hike. You will spend up to 2 – 4 hours per day entering data collected from field visits into the database. Alternatively, you may choose to spend up to a month entering data after program completion.
