Program Overview

Seeking a pre-medical, pre-dental, pre-veterinary, or global and public health-related leadership opportunity abroad? Join the VAW Global Team Leader Fellowship. We are looking for Team Leaders and Chapter Presidents at your university or within your community!

The Team Leader (TL) will have a number of responsibilities throughout the year, including recruiting a team of interns, developing a board of students, establishing VAW Global as an official club or class, attending online training and meetings, and preparing their team for an Internship Trip abroad – during Summer, Spring or Winter Break-through team workshops and fundraising.

VAW Global expects the TL to dedicate a minimum of 3-5 hours per week to this role. If you are not able to travel abroad with your team, you can assign one of the interns as a Site Leader (SL) to take over this part of the role for you.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Volunteers Around The World.

How does VAW Global ensure the safety and well-being of volunteers?

Safety is our priority. We use reputable, licensed transport and private, pre-arranged travel monitored by staff. Students stay with vetted host families and partners trained in health and safety protocols. We maintain close ties with local clinics for 24/7 medical care and follow CDC guidelines. Through rigorous vetting and constant staff communication, we ensure a secure environment for all participants.

How does your organization operate and fund its healthcare work?

We provide healthcare to 20,000+ people annually through a sustainable grassroots model. By connecting students seeking global health experience with communities in need, we fund year-round medical services.

Fund Allocation:
- 45%: Intern logistics (food, housing).
- 28%: Local administration.
- 27%: Social projects for 150 communities.
- 55% of total funds ensure essential care continues even when interns are not on-site.

Do I need prior experience or education in order to participate?

No prior experience is required; this is a shadowing and learning experience. Interns join biweekly prep meetings or our online Training Program. We recommend practicing essential skills—like vitals for medical or animal handling for vet students—with a local professional beforehand. Once on-site, all interns must pass a skills check with our licensed staff before participating in clinical days to ensure competency and safety.

Do I need any vaccinations in order to travel and participate?

You do not need any specific vaccinations to travel and participate in a VAW program. However, VAW follows all current CDC travel health guidelines and recommendations for each country. Participants are strongly encouraged to review those recommendations and consult with their primary care provider or a travel medicine clinic to determine which vaccines or medications are appropriate for their personal health needs.
