Institute for Global Studies offers an internship placement at a monastery north of the ancient Buddhist town of Boudhanath in Nepal. Students serve as apprentices under a world-renowned Tibetan monk and leader. Weekly dharma talks initiate them into an evolving practice. Complementing the study of Buddhist principles is the opportunity to practice the dharma. Students donate their time to selected projects aimed at temple restoration, as well as the education of the monks in residence. Tutor sessions in the English language and world geography are held for monks within the temples. Since the 1970s, the lamas and monks have managed to live their monastic lives and, at the same time, find space in their monastery for foreign visitors. They have taught the Lord Buddha's Dharma, counseled, served, and cooked for them as well as learned their languages. The monastery, or Kopan, offers an extensive library with books in several languages, and an audio and video library. Tibetan and Western sangha, or monks and nuns, are available for private talks and advice.

Research key development needs of low-income indigenous communities, and propose integrated solutions that also preserve their culture. THE CHALLENGE Guaranda is one of Ecuador's poorest regions. Most Indigenous people live in rural areas where poverty exceeds 40%, child malnutrition 48%, illiteracy 10%, and teenage pregnancy 26%. Five centuries after colonization, globalization could be the final blow to these cultures. Many young people migrate to cities to support families, and the Kichwa language risks extinction. THE SOLUTION We may have only a generation or two to ensure these cultures survive. Fortunately, locals work to continue traditions and rebuild pride. With your help, we can understand the factors determining whether they preserve and regenerate their culture while joining the global community of the 21st century. OUR METHODOLOGY Our internships use Design Thinking to co-create solutions with local partners. You’ll learn to observe, ideate, and prototype in real contexts, building skills while driving sustainable change. On weekends—or before and after your stay—you can explore Ecuador, from the Amazon to the Galápagos.

Frequently Asked Questions
Anthropology internships abroad offer hands-on experience in diverse cultural settings, helping you develop cross-cultural communication and field research skills. You’ll gain exposure to different research methodologies, work with local communities, and build a global professional network. These experiences enhance your resume and prepare you for careers in academia, NGOs, and cultural organizations.
Anthropology interns assist with fieldwork, conduct ethnographic research, analyze cultural data, and support community engagement projects. They may work in museums, research institutions, or nonprofit organizations, helping with documentation, interviews, and archival research. Depending on the focus area, interns can also contribute to policy development, cultural preservation, or public education initiatives.
Anthropology internships are available worldwide, especially in culturally rich regions. Mexico, Peru, and Greece offer archaeology-focused placements, while India, Kenya, and Indonesia provide ethnographic research opportunities. In Europe, the UK, Germany, and France host museum and academic internships, while Australia and New Zealand offer projects in Indigenous studies.
Paid anthropology internships are less common than unpaid ones, especially in academic or nonprofit settings. However, some research institutions, NGOs, and government agencies offer stipends or funding for fieldwork. Competitive grants and scholarships can also help cover costs. Opportunities in corporate anthropology, UX research, and heritage consulting are more likely to offer financial compensation.
Remote anthropology internships present challenges like limited hands-on fieldwork and time zone differences when collaborating with teams abroad. However, they offer flexibility, access to global research projects, and opportunities to develop digital ethnography skills. Interns can analyze online communities, conduct virtual interviews, and work with archival data, gaining valuable research experience without geographical constraints.
