Why Earn a Tourism Degree Abroad
Becoming a stranger in a strange land is the best way to get a firm gage on what the tourism industry is all about. Not only will earning your tourism degree abroad place you in prime position to develop the necessary cross-cultural skills needed to excel in the field, it will also place you in the shoes of your future clientele who will be world travellers themselves. Earning a full degree abroad requires ambition, adaptability, and a desire for total cultural immersion – it may surprise you what you become capable of.
Locations
Travel and tourism degree programs are available all over the world, so rather than cover every potential destination we’ll focus here on some major factors that should narrow down your decision.
First, where are the most prestigious programs available? If studying tourism at a top-notch university is one of your main criteria, then you may want to check out programs in countries such as Switzerland, Spain, the United States, and Australia. These countries, all exceedingly popular travel destinations in themselves, boast some of the most respected tourism and hospitality schools out there.
Next is the language barrier. While many tourism programs abroad are offered in English because that is the world’s current lingua franca, this is not always the case at full universities. Domestic colleges tend to use their own country’s language as the medium for education, so make sure that there are English speaking tourism courses available if you are not sufficiently adept in the language.
Finally, you should consider earning your degree abroad somewhere that you could actually see yourself making a career in as well. If you are travelling to a country, learning its customs, and studying its language in order to pursue your tourism degree abroad, then odds are you will have established a pretty solid foundation by the time your program is over. You never know what kind of job opportunities may sprout up!
Tourism Degrees Abroad
The most common degrees abroad that students pursue in the field are typically either a Bachelors or Masters degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management. While the degree may look similar on paper after graduation, tourism programs abroad are actually very diverse in nature, so be sure to research as many programs as you can in depth before making your decision.
While different in many ways, most tourism degree programs follow the general arc of general business courses followed by the choice of specialization in areas such as tourism, event management, hospitality, travel, and recreation. Some other general courses you might take include hotel management, food management, brand management, travel law, and travel finance. Tourism is a huge professional field with many niche areas to study, so sample as many areas as you can before choosing your focus.
Many tourism degree programs abroad will also require you to complete an internship and/or final research paper as part of your studies (this is more commonly required at the postgraduate level than at the undergraduate level). By the time you earn your degree you will be fully prepared to begin the path towards running hotels, travel agencies, major festivals and events, or whatever your heart desires!
Benefits & Challenges
Travel. You are at the early stages of beginning a career in the tourism industry, and there is no better way to sow the seeds of success than by becoming a world-traveller yourself in earning your tourism degree abroad.
Learn. Being able to apply your classroom lessons to your own experience as a traveller will enhance the learning process tenfold when earning your degree abroad in tourism.
Network. It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know. At school and while travelling you will constantly be making connections abroad which will turn into great friendships and valuable professional contacts down the road.

EHL Hospitality Business School: a transformative journey...
December 20, 2025by: Mia Parker Langlois - CanadaProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
Studying at EHL has been a truly life-changing experience. While I expected a strong academic education, what stood out most was the range of opportunities made possible through the school’s global exposure and industry connections. One of the most impactful experiences has been the mobility semester in Singapore. Studying in such a dynamic international environment offered me a brand new perspective, whether it is personally, academically or culturally. This pushed me to develop strong adaptability, independence, and openness to new opportunities and perspectives. Internships in the industry are another key pillar of the EHL experience. Being immersed in professional environments allows you to discover real-life expectations, which encourage the rapid development of responsibility, professionalism, and leadership. A powerful element of EHL lies in its students themselves through meaningful connections and cultural diversity. I am truly grateful for all the opportunities open to us to develop and student initiatives like student ambassador programs, committees and brand exposure.
Outstanding experience
December 18, 2025by: Carolina Rebelo - PortugalProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
EHL is a very international campus where all students are very kind and outgoing. The majority of teachers are kind and always available to help students. EHL values are carried throughout the whole campus and is respected daily by students. Student life is very lively and includes many events, both academic and for entertainment. Sometimes certain aspects could be a bit more flexible in terms of rules. However, overall I am proud to be part of the EHL Bachelor program and I'm excited to join the Alumni network.
EHL is much more than what you imagine
December 18, 2025by: Camille Bugnon - SwitzerlandProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
When I first heard of EHL, I decided to apply to what I believed was a hospitality business school, based on how it was presented across different platforms. I expected to gain networking and career opportunities, hands-on learning through global internships, and a unique blend of hospitality expertise. What I gained, however, was much more. EHL built me, both personally and professionally. The curriculum is designed to allow students to experience continuous growth while constantly encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone. I like to tell others that it is not only an academic journey, but also an opportunity to get to know yourself better, understand the kind of leader you want to become, and define how you can make a meaningful contribution. What I particularly appreciate is that growth doesn’t only happen in the professional world, but also on campus itself, if you are eager to take on new challenges. I had the opportunity to work with the Student Affairs Department on the Singapore campus (one of the best experiences I’ve had, and something I would 100% recommend: be curious and dare to go on exchange!), serve as a Student Ambassador for the school, which allowed me to connect with professionals and fellow students, and take part in a Student Consultancy through one of our student committees. I feel that I still have so much to accomplish at EHL, and I can’t wait to see where this journey will lead me.
EHL, a big family
December 12, 2025by: Rick van Buel - SwitzerlandProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
My experience at EHL Hospitality Business School has been highly enriching and inspiring. From finance classes to marketing courses, every subject truly feels like a distinct journey, offering its own perspective, challenges, and growth opportunities. The diversity of teaching styles and real-world applications makes learning both engaging and meaningful. Beyond academics, what really sets EHL apart is its strong sense of community. EHL feels like a big family, where students, professors, and staff work together to create a supportive and motivating environment. It is genuinely a pleasant university to study at, both academically and personally. The involvement opportunities are also remarkable. From the numerous committees to the impressive number of events organized throughout the year, there is always something happening that allows students to connect, learn, and develop skills outside the classroom. These experiences make student life dynamic, fulfilling, and memorable. Overall, EHL Hospitality Business School offers much more than an education: it provides a unique journey that combines excellence, community, and personal development.
My Experience as a Second Year Student at EHL
December 10, 2025by: Paula Guillamet de Gracia - SpainProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
My experience so far as a second-year student at EHL has been amazing and unforgettable. I decided to continue my studies at EHL after high school because I saw it as a university with immense potential for developing my skills for the future. When I was exploring bachelor’s options, I initially considered business management. However, I realized that simply focusing on business wasn’t enough for me. As someone who thrives on interaction and genuinely enjoys enhancing others’ experiences, I knew I needed more than just business. That’s when I discovered EHL and the Bachelor’s in International Hospitality Management. It perfectly blended the business administration courses I was interested in with the people-oriented approach of hospitality, along with the valuable soft skills it helps develop. One of the key aspects I considered when choosing a university was finding a place whose values aligned with my own and offered the kind of education I was looking for. What truly stood out to me about EHL was its sense of community and family, which is something I greatly value in a university. Moreover, EHL offers incredible opportunities beyond just academics. This includes the internship opportunities integrated into the bachelor’s program, allowing us to work with renowned hotel chains and brands thanks to EHL’s career fairs. Additionally, there are roles as student assistants, involvement in committees, and the student ambassador program, all of which enrich the overall experience. Now talking a bit about my personal journey: during my first internship, I had the incredible opportunity to work at the Four Seasons Hotel Madrid as a Guest Experience Intern. It was an amazing learning experience where I applied my skills in a real-world setting and grew significantly both personally and professionally, which I deeply appreciate. Now that I’m back on campus, I’m actively involved in a committee where I hold the role of marketing and audiovisuals, an area I’m passionate about and eager to develop further. Additionally, I also serve as a student ambassador, which allows me to collaborate with the school and become more engaged within the EHL community. I also have the pleasure of working closely with the Events and Recruitment team at EHL. They gave me the wonderful opportunity to attend two recruitment events, one in Madrid and another in London. At these events, I had the chance to speak with prospective students about my EHL experience, as well as my internship journey, answer their questions, and share insights. I truly enjoy connecting with potential new students and appreciate the chance EHL has given me to participate in these events and share my perspective. Another aspect that stood out to me is the structure of the bachelor’s program, starting with the AP (preparatory year). This hands-on experience is invaluable, especially for someone like me who learns by doing. It’s rare to find such immersive exposure to the hospitality industry, rotating through various hotel departments during the first six months, which then prepares you for the following internship in operations. Finally, as you continue with your studies after the internship, you delve into a variety of subjects, including finance, business, economics, and more. These topics are crucial for developing your skills and preparing you for a successful future in the industry. Another aspect I truly appreciate about EHL is the small class sizes. This allows for personalized teaching, where professors can get to know each student individually and provide tailored support. This environment encourages open communication, making it easy to ask questions and receive detailed explanations.
Genuinely some of the best years of my life by far
November 19, 2025by: Kyle McCully - SingaporeProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
Honestly, the world-class academic program speaks for itself. What surprised me most about EHL was the student life. I’ve met some of the most interesting people and had experiences I never imagined a university would enable, such as night hikes to see the stars, petting cows in a field, directing a musical, or simply enjoying a glass of Ruinart with friends between classes. There’s a sense of shared adventure here that turns memories into actual “lore.” The opportunities are what set EHL apart. When the Four Seasons C-suite visited, the talk alone was inspiring, but I ended up sitting with them at lunch afterwards, and they welcomed me into the conversation. Moments like that gave me perspectives I wouldn’t have gained if I’d stayed in my comfort zone or gone elsewhere. Those conversations shaped how I approach interviews, how I think about my career, and, honestly, how I present myself as a future professional. I feel more confident because of them. I also work across two departments at the school, and the trust and responsibility I’ve been given this early is something I don’t take lightly. It’s rare to be treated like you have something real to contribute before you’ve even graduated. EHL has been more than an education, it’s been a place that continuously hands me opportunities to grow, and the space to rise to them. I’m grateful.

EHL builds champions of human interactions and business operations. This is the best way to launch your career on the professional side as much as on the personal side while enjoying of modern and comfortable infrastructures and a broad student life in a super multicultural environment.
A huge springboard in my work goal
May 03, 2024by: Julien CHIAPPORI - FranceProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
Overall, I enjoyed my studies there so much as I got so many opportunities, whether with friends or with work. My current roommate is still a friend I met in EHL during an event we hosted while working for a committee. I also worked on marketing projects during my internships and studies at EHL, which helped me get my first job right after graduating. I really miss the student life that I used to get on campus; you always have an event happening, an outdoor activity planned, which helps you to truly immerse in what a bachelor is supposed to offer to their students. I highly encourage anyone interested in EHL to join it as long as they have an interest whether in hospitality or in business in general, you won't regret it :)
Amazing four years!
May 03, 2024by: . . - SwitzerlandProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
Looking back on my university experience, I'm truly grateful for the four years I spent at EHL. It was a period of personal growth and skills development for me. Beyond academics, I had the opportunity to develop both soft and hard skills and to create lifelong friendships. The supportive atmosphere and diverse opportunities have played a significant role in shaping me into the person I am today.
Best 4 years of my life
May 03, 2024by: Fabrizio Trivella - SwitzerlandProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
During this program i not only developed my hard skills but also soft skills that are useful in any type of job afterwards. Between the first day and the last there were a lot of great and challenging moments that helped me grow as a person. A lot of job opportunities are available after studying at EHL in diverse sectors. The student life is amazing and I made very strong friendships and developed my personal and professional network at the same time. Can only recommend studying at EHL Hospitality Business School.
I would do it again!
May 03, 2024by: Loïc Page - SwitzerlandProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
EHL was definitely a highlight in my life. The school administration is really adding hospitality to education. EHL is a hospitality Business university, and it allows you to have so many opportunities to pursue your career or study! Plus, EHL student life is something else! So many ways to also learn outside the classroom through different committees.

A fantastic social experience
April 17, 2023by: Natalia Burgess - AustraliaProgram: Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management
EHL is an amazing blend of social, academics and real-world application. The overall experience is one that elicits creativity through a unique learning environment. The subjects studied are varied allowing for broad and unique skills and experiences that can be applied throughout the internships and post graduation.
A wonderful time in Barcelona
August 07, 2018by: Lars Sabini - United StatesProgram: Master in Culinary Arts in Barcelona
I was looking for a cooking school that allowed you to actually participate in the preparation, cooking, and eating of the meals but having into account that I am already a cook I just wanted to make my way up to chef of a restaurant and here I learned everything I needed in terms of confidence, skills and current market. My Dad found this place and saw the abundance of classes offered and knew I'd find something here. The Master was absolute amazing from the beginning to the end. I enjoyed so much everything I learnt there. Now I can say thanks so much to have this great Master that allowed me to be a true competitor in this world to be the best chef ever in my town and open my own restaurant!
Best decision ever
May 31, 2016by: Brittany - EnglandProgram: Degree Programs at the University of Westminster, London
I enjoyed my time at Westminster University. I studied in the post-graduate course Media, Campaigning and Social Change. This course exceeded my expectations. It covered everything listed on the information site plus so much more. University of Westminster is very diverse and I always met so many people from all over, studying various and interesting topics. The academic staff are very professional and know their topics well. The foundation of learning at UW is based in critical thinking. I loved how I was allowed to express my own opinions, hear others and learn from them and also and analyse an idea from all angles. I would recommend this university and this course.
