Why Earn an HR Degree Abroad

Remember the human resource (HR) guy Toby Flenderson from “The Office”? His life was boring and mournful. However, in real life, a career in human resource management can be exciting and have countless benefits and perks. Why not turn this profession into an exciting adventure and earn your degree abroad?!

Attending top schools for human resources graduate programs (as well as undergrad) will make you more attractive to future employers, therefore making it easier to find a job quickly after graduation. Employers will see that you are more flexible and culturally aware than other candidates. Your willingness to step out of your comfort zone and go the extra mile (or thousands of miles!) as a student will speak volumes about your potential to be an asset in the workplace.

Another reason to consider fulfilling your human resources degree requirements in another country is for financial purposes. For undergraduates, many universities abroad offer three year programs opposed to the typical four year — and HR masters programs can be shortened as well. This is an attractive option for many students because you will enter the workplace sooner and spend less on tuition. Also, some countries do not charge tuition fees at all even for international students. How amazing is that? Study in a foreign country, graduate earlier than your peers at home, AND all for free? That is pretty much a no-brainer.

Locations

Human resource management degree programs are available around the world, so you can pick and choose from a long list of potential destinations to begin your academic career abroad. Some key factors to consider while narrowing your location search are type of communication experience you prefer, the degree of international experience you hope to achieve, and the overall expense.

Communication is a key factor to consider when choosing a location to earn your degree abroad in human resource management. You’ll want choose a country that is in tune with your personal interests and goals, but you might also want to be able to communicate in the country’s language in order to gain the most from your experience. If you are more comfortable with English and not interested in learning a new language, consider programs in England, Australia, or Ireland. Human resource degree programs in these countries will allow you to focus on your studies, and at the same time, allow you to enjoy and immerse yourself in a totally different culture. Learning the slang and dialect of the locals in these regions will be a fun challenge as well!

If you are seeking a more international experience, consider choosing a human resource management degree program abroad in China. If you are not intimidated by living and learning in a non-English speaking country, earning your degree in China can be a rewarding adventure. China is a multicultural country, so you will be exposed to numerous cultures and personalities, giving you that much more experience working with and learning from different types of people.

If expense is your largest determining factor when choosing a location to earn your degree abroad in human resource management, consider countries that are in general known for lower than normal tuition fees or even free tuition for international students. Germany is one country that is typically known to be easier on the pocketbook to earn a degree. Be sure to do thorough research, however, and don’t forget to consider living expenses when making your final decision.

While communication, culture, and cost are equally important factors to consider when narrowing your search, also think about choosing a location where you might want to consider living long term. You never know what kind of connections you might make while earning your degree that could lead to future job prospects after completing human resources graduate programs or bachelor’s degrees.

Human Resource Management Degrees

Depending on the type of human resource management degrees you desire to complete — undergraduate, masters, or doctoral — you will no doubt gain a competitive edge in the job market by earning your human resource management degree abroad.

Undergraduate. If you are fresh out of high school and ready to begin your college career and journey to adulthood, consider going big and applying to a bachelor’s degree program abroad. While your friends back home are in the admissions line at the local community college, you’ll embark on an experience of a lifetime that will only open doors for you in the future. Many bachelor’s degree programs abroad are three year programs, so you can enter the workforce quicker or possibly seek a higher degree in human resource management.

Master’s. Whether you have earned your undergraduate degree abroad or at home, human resources graduate programs a good idea. You might be attracted to working for a particular company in a location abroad that is appealing to you long term. You’ll also increase your hireability by making yourself more desirable to international companies. If you play your cards right, you could possibly land your dream job upon graduation in your dream living destination abroad. Most master’s degree programs are one to two years.

Doctorate. If you are interested in seeking an advanced degree in human resource management abroad, there are plenty of opportunities. Since most Ph.D. programs take three to four years to complete, by this time you have likely immersed yourself in a permanent location and are driven by your desire to complete your research in your country of choice. In other words, you’re in it for the long haul! When you choose to pursue a doctoral degree abroad, you will have the opportunity to work alongside foreign peers, allowing you to gain a more thorough knowledge of the human resource management field.

The experience required to apply to top schools for masters in human resources abroad varies among universities, so be sure to check the requirements listed by your prospective university. For undergrads, most programs will ask for verification that you have completed your secondary education and that your grades meet the criteria required for the program you are applying to.

Benefits & Challenges

Shorter programs, free or low-cost tuition, free health care, learning a foreign language, and becoming an impressive asset to employers are just a few of the many benefits you can receive by earning a degree abroad in human resource management. Not to mention, you’ll be joining a diverse community while earning a degree abroad in human resources management that will help you develop international skills. 

As with most things of importance, there is a downside to earning a degree abroad in human resource management. You’ll face cultural barriers and possibly feel like an outsider sometimes. Being far from your support system back home can create feelings of homesickness, loneliness, and depression. However, if you consider this as an adventurous opportunity, then use that spirit to face your fears and live the life you have dreamed of living.

Earning your degree abroad in human resource management will be rewarding on many levels and equally challenging. Once you make a decision and get it all figured out, the biggest dilemma you will face after graduation will be to return home or to stay forever.
