Archaeology Degrees Abroad

Earning your archaeology degree abroad is the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world and implant yourself in a wholly unique anthropological context. Rather than stick to the familiar you will be venturing out into the field and beginning to lay the groundwork for a successful global career; or as the preeminent fictional archaeologist Indiana Jones would prefer to describe what waits ahead, “Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory.”

Why Earn Your Degree Abroad

Archaeology is a degree that you can take with you to work on projects located all over the globe. Why not get a head start on that journey by earning your archaeology degree abroad? Not only is it a great way to establish a global network of contacts in the field, but it will also greatly deepen your appreciation for cultural diversity around the world; the origins of which archaeology seeks to uncover and explain.

Locations

Archaeology is a fairly resource-intensive academic discipline, and as such you will have the most luck searching for archaeology degree abroad programs within countries that have well-established university systems. For example countries such as England, Australia, and the Netherlands all boast some of the most prestigious schools for archaeology in the world.

Many countries in Asia including Israel, Lebanon, and India also are home to a handful of schools with very highly regarded archaeology programs. All of these countries lay in regions with very early established civilizations as well, providing a very enriching context for budding archaeologists.

The language barrier is something important to keep in mind when deciding where in the world to pursue your archaeology degree abroad. While there are at least some English-speaking degree programs offered in most places, your opportunities will multiply vastly and you will have a much more rewarding experience if you are able to speak your host country’s language.

Lastly, try to also choose a region of the world where the history and cultural origins are of particular interest to you. It is likely that your immediate environment will establish a lot of the source material for your studies, so you want to be pursuing your archaeology degree abroad somewhere that intrigues you on a level beyond academia!

Academics & Degrees

Archaeology degrees abroad at the undergraduate level will prepare you for a bright future in the field by educating you within a broad context of archaeological base-concepts and related academic subjects. For example on top of your archaeological studies you might be required to take courses in other disciplines such as history, geography, anthropology, and evolutionary biology which provide a larger contextual background. Undergraduate degrees typically last for four years.

If you want to move on to become an archaeologist after your undergraduate studies, then you will almost always be expected to possess an advanced degree as well. Master’s programs abroad in archaeology will typically last for two years and allow you to choose a geographical region and/or subfield to specialize in. At this point you will also typically be expected to complete some of your own independent research and fieldwork in supplement to your studies.

Lastly, if you have made it through the first six years or so and still want to become an archaeologist, then a PhD is the final step. PhD programs abroad in archaeology vary in length and generally require a substantial amount of research and fieldwork in order to be elected as a doctoral candidate.

Benefits & Challenges

Explore the Field. Archaeology is a relevant discipline to the history of the entire world, and earning your degree abroad is the perfect way to travel and discern for yourself where you want to make your mark.

Cultural Differences. Most modern cultural differences that are manifest within society can be traced back to a common origin; exploring the tremendous diversity of human life on our planet will further intrigue you as to the roots that bind us all together.

Linguistic Opportunity. Lastly, earning your archaeology degree abroad is the perfect opportunity to become bilingual, which can be a huge benefit down the line as you begin a career in the field. If you are totally convinced that you want to go abroad for your degree in archaeology, start learning that second language now!
