Degrees Abroad in Greece

Being one of the world’s oldest civilizations and the birthplace of Western education, the vast benefits of earning your degree abroad in Greece speak for themselves. Dating back thousands of years to the reign of Alexander the Great, this culturally rich country at the crossroads between Europe, Africa, and Asia has for long been an influential Mediterranean power. Whatever degree you intend to pursue, studying abroad in Greece is the opportunity to excel while travelling to where modern academia itself began!

Locations

Greece is located at the southern tip of the Balkan region in southeastern Europe, sharing land borders with Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Turkey to the north. With a mountainous mainland surrounded by water to the east, south and west, and over 200 inhabited islands also sprawling out amid the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, Greece boasts one of the longest coastlines in the whole world. The total population of the country is roughly 11 million citizens.

As the capital and largest city, Athens is traditionally the most popular destination where to earn a degree abroad in Greece. With nearly 4 million people living in its reaches, this influential historical city has developed into a thriving modern metropolis which is home to one-third of Greece’s entire population. The National Technical University of Athens, Greece’s highest ranked academic institution, is also located in Athens among several other major universities.

Other highly regarded schools where you might look to pursue a degree abroad in Greece include the University of Crete, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and University of Patras. There are some 20 public universities located throughout the Greek countryside, so thoroughly research where offers the best programs for the degree abroad you are interested in!

Academics & Degrees

Since the earliest days of Plato and Aristotle, Greece has been a renowned center of education in Europe. And while its higher education system today does not rank as highly as some others the continent (or as highly it did a few thousand years ago), there are still a handful of Greek universities which are acclaimed as top schools in Europe. The country’s classical roots and long-standing academic tradition have led to a thriving modern culture in which to earn your degree abroad in Greece.

Some of the most popularly pursued subjects among international students who are earning a degree abroad in Greece include international business, communications, finance, and law. You are by no means limited to these areas; if you enroll at a major Greek university as an international student, then you will generally have the opportunity to select from any degree-track that is offered.

Greek is the language of education across the country, so if you have your heart set on earning a degree abroad in Greece, then it’s never too early to begin studying the language. There are some shorter degree programs which are offered in the English language, generally at the Master’s level, but if you really want an immersive experience then speaking the language is a must!

Scholarships & Costs

The major Greek universities are all public, and do not require students from anywhere in the European Union to pay tuition at the undergraduate level. Graduate degrees may require you pay tuition however, and students from outside of Europe will also have to pay tuition regardless of academic level.

Greece is more affordable than most Western European countries, making it an attractive destination to study abroad on a budget. For more information on available financial aid opportunities for international students, be sure to also check out our Scholarship Directory.

Accommodation & Visas

Most international students who earn their degree abroad in Greece choose to live in dormitories at the outset of their program, which is generally the cheapest and most convenient option. Many choose to move off-campus at some point during their degree-track as well, the affordability of which may vary depending on where in the country you earn your degree abroad.

International students coming from within the European Union will not have to apply for a visa in order to earn their degree abroad in Greece, while those coming from outside of Europe will generally have to apply for a student visa with the endorsement of the host school.
