Teaching Volunteer Programs

Teaching abroad is a goal for many people, whether they have a degree in education or not. Volunteering in as a teacher or teaching assistant for a short amount of time is an excellent way to test if a career in teaching is a good fit for you without committing to the investment of a TEFL certificate or working abroad full time. Volunteer teaching abroad gives individuals specific classroom experience even before a practicum or student teaching placement is possible, and adds a competitive edge to any education student’s resume.

Village Primary School Teaching in Uganda

The Real Uganda's volunteers assist our partners with a variety of classroom activities. Because local education is largely by rote, we want volunteers to feed these hungry little brains! Volunteers create interactive learning experiences and provide children with a loving and creative environment. Volunteers choose the age and topics to teach. Lesson plans are created based on student interest and national curriculum. Arts and crafts, sport, team building, and public health are popular. The aim is to encourage team work, fun, creativity, literacy, and general knowledge. This is a challenging and rewarding program for volunteers experienced in organizing children, such as camp counselors, day care workers, and people who generally love kids. Bring your games, songs, and enthusiasm to the village! Other activities such as women empowerment and community gardening may be on offer by the host organization. Volunteers should dig in and try everything. The exchange of ideas and culture is highly valued in Uganda. School terms vary annually but generally fall within these dates: • Feb 1 to Apr 30 • May 1 to Aug 15 • Sept 15 to Nov 30

Teaching English in Cambodia

This meaningful program was created to hone the English-speaking abilities of some of Phnom Penh's poorest residents. Education is key to breaking this seemingly endless poverty cycle, yet sadly, having access to native-speaking teachers is (more often than not) a luxury only available to children of wealthy parents. In collaboration with our local partner agency and international participants, Love Volunteers aims to change that by giving access to English-speaking teachers and classroom assistants. This project works with schools to reach over 1,000 children ages 6 to 12, hoping they ultimately take the first step toward a life free of poverty. Volunteers share their English knowledge and skills, making a positive and long-lasting impact on the lives of some of Cambodia’s poorest youth.

World Endeavors offers exciting programs that allow participants to experience Costa Rica while contributing meaningfully to the community. Volunteers can choose from various projects, including teaching, orphanage assistance, environmental conservation, wildlife conservation, and community development. World Endeavors volunteers live in Atenas, a small, relatively prosperous farming town in the central highlands of Costa Rica where coffee, sugarcane, and fruit are grown. Life here revolves around family and community, and the nightlife consists mostly of family gatherings, barbecues, and shared meals. Residents can often be found browsing the colorful farmer’s market for fresh produce, enjoying a cup of local coffee at a café, or strolling in the park in the city center. Atenas is renowned for its climate, which keeps the city warm in the daytime and cool at night. Public pools and hiking trails make Atenas an appealing destination for those who wish to spend time outdoors, and the town’s location, less than an hour from the capital of San José and the international airport, makes it easily accessible for arriving volunteers.

A Guide to Volunteer Teaching Abroad

Best Locations

In general, the main regions for teaching placements abroad are in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, however, you are likely to find a placement anywhere in the world.

Ecuador is a smart choice for those interested in working on their Spanish language skills, since the Spanish spoken in Ecuador is well-pronounced and easy to understand. Ecuador has an open and welcoming culture, which helps teachers feel involved in the community and get to know the teachers and students easily. Most opportunities for volunteer teaching in Ecuador are centered on teaching English.

The Philippines is an ideal place for volunteer teaching abroad. Many people in the Philippines speak English, so lessons in the arts, healthcare, and technology are still successful even if you do not speak the local language. There are still some opportunities to teach English in rural areas of the country, where schools primarily utilize local dialects.

South Africa offers a wide variety of teaching placements and the choice to volunteer in South Africa as a teacher is a wise one. You can work with children or adults, either at a school or in a community. Volunteers in South Africa may also work at neighborhood centers or in rural villages doing special lessons or workshops.

A Fundamental & Core Experience - I miss it more than anything

February 20, 2026by: Marwan Eleskandarani - Egypt

Program: Volunteer as a Summer Camp Counselor in Europe

10

It's hard to describe all of my - or even some of my - favourite moments at camp because of a few reasons, namely, the sheer amount and quality of those memories. However, I truly believe the camp experience was fundamental to my upbringing throughout my teenage years (being a camper and a counsellor between the ages of 17 - 19). I also believe my experiences were fundamental to how I was shaped as a young adult, from a professional standpoint, where I was given responsibilities beyond my capacity at the time, and from a personal standpoint, where I had to cooperate with dozens of nationalities, cultures, and upbringings. I credit much of openness, charisma, and professional success to the time I spent in Europe instead of lounging around back home with not much to do. I wouldn't change a thing about my experience. One of my core memories is the first teamer training I went through. At that point, I had never left for an extended period of time, and 3 months sounded daunting. After a few days of rigorous training, it seemed like I had left my old life behind, barefoot, in the mud, zipping around, climbing from tree to tree, executing flawless dishcos and cooking some questionably good meals. Jan's first boom-shika-boom (I hope I spelled that correctly) is forever ingrained in my memory. However, not to focus on one isolated incident, many memories spring to mind: the Austrian mountains, the English Castles, the Danish plains, the German forests and Neuburg's Schlossfest (not knowing about the existence of Schlossfest is a recipe for a delightful surprise). The list goes on and on and on. I remember leading 2 leadership in a row, with 2 hikes in a row, that's 200+ KM of walking in 8 days, with not a single bite to eat. The more I write, the more I remember, and the more nostalgic I feel. All in all, I do wish I could go back in time to truly appreciate my time there and relive every second. Thank you Camp Europe. You've changed my life.
