Prepare to Volunteer Abroad
Understand the Benefits
Volunteering in environmental conservation offers a range of rewarding experiences and professional advantages:
- Diverse projects: From reforestation to marine conservation, volunteers can engage in various impactful activities, such as planting trees, conducting surveys, and educating local communities.
- Career skills: Gain hands-on skills in environmental monitoring, data collection, and sustainable practices, which are useful if you're pursuing a career in environmental science or conservation.
- Humanitarian impact: Your work supports ecosystems and also the local communities that depend on them for their livelihoods.
Things to Know
Here are a few key considerations to prepare for your volunteer experience abroad:
- Program intensity - Some programs are physically and mentally demanding; adaptability is essential.
- Safety protocols - Natural environments can be unpredictable, so always follow safety guidelines and respect wildlife.
- Visa requirements - Check with your host country’s embassy to ensure you meet all visa and entry requirements.
- Cultural sensitivity - Knowing basic phrases in the local language and respecting local customs helps create connections and shows respect.
Choose a Location
Environmental conservationists and volunteers are essential in every region of the world. Here are some destinations where volunteer efforts are urgently required.
Madagascar
Situated off the coast of Africa is one of the most endangered places in the world, home to unique species, including 50 types of lemurs. Major threats include cattle grazing, logging, agriculture, and invasive species, as well as poaching that impacts animal populations across Africa.
South America
The Amazon Rainforest, home to 10% of the world’s species, faces significant threats from deforestation, leading to biodiversity loss and increased global warming. Similarly, the Tropical Andes, a biodiversity hotspot with critically endangered species like the yellow-tailed woolly monkey and the spectacled bear, is threatened by mining, logging, agriculture, and construction.
Indonesia
Experiencing severe deforestation due to palm oil demand puts animals such as the endangered Bornean orangutan and the critically endangered Sumatran rhinoceros at risk of extinction.

100% The Best Ethical Travel Experience
August 27, 2026by: Claudia Abrantes - United StatesProgram: GIVE Hawaii: Environmental, Cultural, & Marine Conservation
GIVE makes ethical tourism & travel easy and accessible for anyone dedicated to making a positive impact. From the moment I arrived in Hawai’i, my GIVE guides welcomed me with open arms and wide smiles—they made traveling alone less frightening and helped me make memories I’ll never forget. Not only were the excursions to snorkel at the coral reefs, hiking through a volcano, and crawling through caves spectacular experiences—each project brought new and important lessons. Through our project partners we learned about the negative impact mainstream tourism has on Hawai’i, we learned about caring for the āina (land) through an indigenous perspective, and supported projects that directly helped the community. Yes, I spent a week in paradise, but this GIVE trip gave me so much more than pretty pictures. I can say that I am leaving a better person than when I came. Thank you GIVE Volunteers for this life-changing experience!

Dental Volunteering in Cusco
August 22, 2026by: Paulina Morrissey - United StatesProgram: Volunteer in Latin America! Costa Rica, Guatemala, & Peru
My experience in Cusco was such an amazing time. The people and atmosphere were amazing. Only after a short while this place and these people became a second home and family. The dental program was a great experience especially for a pre-dental student, you learn so much and meet so many great doctors, great for people who are ready for hands-on experience, learning, and giving a helping hand. I have already planned my return and can't wait to explore more of the programs that Maximo has to offer!

Amazing experience in La Ventanilla
August 19, 2026by: Niamh Townsend - United KingdomProgram: Sea Turtle and Reptile Conservation in La Ventanilla, Mexico
The support I received before going and while on the trip was really helpful, especially the programme guide, which included everything I needed to know about the trip. The opportunity to participate in IVHQ zoom calls before going was also helpful as it gave me more information and gives you the chance to ask any questions. I had an amazing experience volunteering with the turtles and crocodiles in La Ventanilla and learning about their conservation measures. Everyone there was so kind and friendly, and although I was nervous about travelling solo beforehand, they made me feel so welcome and safe. The food was delicious, and the accommodation was really nice. One thing I would say to anyone going on the project is to plan your transport back to the airport in advance. I found arranging this on my own quite difficult, especially with the language barrier, so I would recommend considering this before leaving for the project. Overall, I had an amazing experience and will definitely be booking another volunteer trip with IVHQ in the future!

This experience changed my life for the best!
August 19, 2026by: Jimena Amaro Cordova - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects pushed me far beyond what I expected, taking me from supporting program logistics to independently running counseling sessions and managing my own client caseload within just a few months. I was trusted with real responsibility early on, from leading a group of 45 adult learners on my own to adapting a therapeutic intervention on short notice for an urgent client referral, and that trust taught me more about clinical work and resilience than I could have learned in a classroom. This experience confirmed that clinical psychology, particularly cross-cultural and community-based care, is exactly the path I want to pursue.
I had an amazing time
August 16, 2026by: worthy Idahosa - CanadaProgram: Volunteer in Latin America! Costa Rica, Guatemala, & Peru
I really enjoyed becoming interconnected with the Costa Rican experience. My host parents Tulio and Carmen were the best people ever. They became my home away from home. They were so kind and showed me the true Costa Rican kindness everyone talked about!
