How a Virtual Global Health Internship Reshaped One Medical Student's Understanding of Culture, Systems, and Practice
May 15, 2026by: Joy Barua - United StatesAs a fourth-year medical student in the US, the CFHI Virtual Global & Public Health Internship – India was exactly the kind of experience I had been looking for to expand my understanding of health systems beyond the clinical settings I am accustomed to. The live sessions with India-based public health professionals brought real depth to topics I thought I understood from textbooks, things like infectious disease burden, sanitation gaps, and community-level intervention, and hearing about them directly from people doing the work on the ground reframed how I think about health systems entirely. What made the program stand out even further was the inclusion of personal and professional development, and Hindi language lessons, something I did not expect and found genuinely enriching, since being able to connect even a little with the language added a layer of cultural immersion that you rarely get from a virtual program. The program structure moved at a good pace, the CFHI team was responsive whenever I had questions, and the small group discussions with other participants pushed my thinking in directions I did not expect. What stayed with me most was the shift in how I understand cultural humility, not as a competency to check off, but as something that has to be actively practiced every time you step into a health context that is not your own. I plan to pursue global health as part of my career, and this program clarified what that actually means in practice. I would recommend it to any medical student who wants to move beyond the US health system.

My time at this internship has been an incredibly valuable experience. I was initially very nervous to commit, even during the interview. However, I had nothing to worry about since, looking back, I was able to choose the internship field based on my interests and career. They help you along the whole process and answering your questions is just an email away. My experience at my internship organization was your usual spreadsheet task and helping with whatever the team needed. Due to the remote nature, there is only so much you can do to help; they do have in-person ones also! Each organization is different, and depending on the organization, it can affect your experience. My university also offered credits (usually an online class) and covered any costs of the internship as part of the program. I recommend it to any student because not only do you get credit, but you also have the freedom to do other summer activities; the best of both worlds. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to advance my career path, help out a genuine and impactful organization, and learn what real-world work looks like.

What stood out most was how invested the team was in my success they provided guidance, resources, and encouragement that made all the difference. During my internship with an autism research network, I contributed to an international project focused on autism screening and community research priorities. My work involved systematically screening studies, reviewing inclusion/exclusion criteria, and extracting detailed data into shared spreadsheets. I gained experience in critically reading abstracts and full texts, interpreting methodologies, and paying close attention to performance metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, and AUC values. Beyond technical skills, this internship gave me a deeper appreciation for the nuances of autism research — especially the importance of ethical considerations, community involvement, and shifting away from overly medicalized models of disability. I learned how to apply exclusion codes consistently, collaborate with peers across time zones, and manage large datasets precisely. This experience strengthened my research skills and my ability to reflect on the broader impact of scientific work. It challenged me to think critically about equity in autism research, including representation across countries, age ranges, and support needs. I now feel much more confident navigating scientific literature and contributing to conversations around research priorities. Overall, my internship was both practical and meaningful. It reinforced my academic interests in neurobiology and psychology while developing transferable organizational skills, critical analysis, and teamwork skills. I am grateful for the experience and for the opportunity to contribute to research that has real-world impact.

I got matched with a company relevant to my interests and worked with some amazing people. In my internship I created lead magnets and developed an operations manual/cultural handbook for a film production company. The skills I developed most while interning have been communication, adaptability, and time-management. Xena showed a genuine understanding of my goals and challenges. She was always responsive and open to addressing any questions. Her willingness to help made me feel heard and supported throughout the Connect-123 internship program.

I am truly so thankful for Connect-123 for helping me find my perfect internship. Both my internships have been through Connect-123 and both were amazing experiences. My program director, Xena Pulliam, has been such a wonderful source of guidance and support throughout this entire process. The company I was initially interviewed by was about an hour late to the interview, and though the deadline for finding a placement was approaching, she didn’t give up on me. She found me the perfect placement at another company and even communicated on my behalf to ensure the work I was given aligned with my goals and interests. Through this experience, I was able to build valuable connections, develop new skills, and gain hands-on experience that has shaped my career path. I’m so grateful to Xena and Connect-123 for making both of my internships not only possible but truly meaningful.

I’m incredibly grateful for the support I received from Connect 123 and my supervisors throughout my internship experience. Their guidance made it possible for me to secure an internship quickly, and over the course of eight weeks, I learned an incredible amount—not only through the internship itself, but also through the professional and skill development opportunities they encouraged. Beyond gaining hands-on experience, I developed stronger communication, time management, and problem-solving skills that I will carry forward in my career.
My virtual practicum experience
November 14, 2025by: Alyasia Cook - United StatesProgram: Virtual Global Health Practicum
My practicum with CFHI provided me with valuable exposure to global HIV prevention strategies and enriched my understanding of health disparities in Sub-Saharan Africa. Through my project on PrEP education, I strengthened my skills in research translation, curriculum development, and culturally responsive health communication. I appreciated the opportunity to engage in meaningful global health work, deepen my understanding of HIV prevention across different populations, and contribute to educational tools for healthcare professionals. CFHI created a dynamic learning environment that challenged me and supported my growth as a public health professional
The best month spent in Tarija, Bolivia!
September 12, 2025by: Olivia Toner - United StatesProgram: Virtual Global & Public Health Internship - Bolivia
During my CFHI Global Health Program in Tarija, Bolivia, I had the opportunity to rotate through several different healthcare settings that gave me a well-rounded perspective. I spent one week in a city clinic, two weeks in a rural clinic, and one week on the OB/GYN floor of the main hospital. As a fourth-year medical student applying OB/GYN, I especially appreciated how the local team made sure I had plenty of women’s health exposure. I was able to attend surgeries, follow patients on the wards, and even visit the Chagas Center. The doctors and nurses were welcoming and inclusive, always making sure I was involved while keeping within the ethical guidelines set by CFHI. Beyond my clinical duties, the local team and community made my experience unforgettable. My host family was incredible; they welcomed me into their home as one of their own, and I had some of my favorite memories sharing meals and conversations with them. The Spanish classes were also excellent, completely tailored to my needs, and helped me improve both my medical Spanish and everyday communication. I always felt supported by the CFHI staff and the local team, who went out of their way to make sure I was learning, comfortable, and safe. Tarija itself was the perfect setting for this experience. It’s a beautiful, calm city surrounded by nature and filled with kind, welcoming people. From exploring the plazas to enjoying the local food and culture, I loved every moment of living there. This program not only strengthened my clinical skills and Spanish, but also gave me a much deeper appreciation for global health and the ways providers adapt to serve their communities. I’m leaving with new friendships, meaningful experiences, and an even stronger commitment to serving underserved populations in my future career.

Landed me my dream internship!!!!
August 03, 2025by: Naj AB - Saudi ArabiaOne of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I originally planned to do one of their in-person internships, but due to some unexpected circumstances, I switched to the virtual option, and it turned out to be the best decision I could’ve made. From the beginning, Matthew was incredibly thoughtful and attentive. Every opportunity he shared with me aligned closely with my goals, and the one I ultimately accepted ended up being exactly the kind of role, company, and work environment I had envisioned. The Spanish classes included in the program were also a game changer. They introduced me to an amazing teacher who has helped me make more progress than I ever expected. I genuinely can’t recommend this program enough. Don’t think twice, it’s 100% worth it. Trusting them took so much pressure off my shoulders, and it’s honestly made life feel lighter. More than anything, see it as an investment in yourself. They don’t just place you anywhere, they carefully match you with respected companies and NGOs that fit your goals and values!
Great experience
January 20, 2025by: Stella Ohakamnu - United StatesThe CFHI Ghana Virtual Internship was an incredibly impactful experience that exceeded my expectations. While the program was virtual, the opportunity to connect with healthcare professionals in Ghana provided me with a unique perspective on global health. Through live sessions and discussions, I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the healthcare system in Ghana, particularly around maternal health and public health outreach. One of the highlights was the collaborative learning environment—working alongside passionate peers from across the globe and engaging with the local team in Ghana gave me a deeper appreciation for the importance of cultural competence in healthcare. The virtual cultural exchange sessions also helped me better understand Ghanaian traditions, food, and daily life, making the experience feel more personal and immersive. This internship has not only strengthened my understanding of public health in a global context but has also inspired me to continue working toward solutions for healthcare challenges in underserved communities. I highly recommend this program to anyone looking to broaden their global health perspective, regardless of their background.
An Enriching Experience
November 13, 2024by: Tori Daniels - United StatesProgram: Virtual Global & Public Health Internship - Bolivia
Going into the program, I was unsure what to expect, but I'm glad I was able to experience it! I was able to learn about Bolivia's healthcare systems and improve my skills in Spanish, which was a main goal of mine. I realized that Bolivia has a healthcare structure that we in the U.S. should envy. I thought that I was pretty well educated and held little bias, but by learning more about Bolivia, I began to recognize all the ingrained biases that stemmed from the United States media. It inspired me to aspire to learn more about Global Healthcare. Truly, it was a worthwhile experience!
Ghana Program!
September 30, 2024by: Queenie Ta - United StatesI had the opportunity of participating in the CFHI Virtual Program for Ghana. Through this program, I gained much insight and exposure to what Ghana's healthcare system is like, as well as the societal, political, economic, and cultural factors that contribute to their identity as a country today. The nuances and intersections in much categories was insightful to learn about as well as their rich culture. I learned so much through the activities, modules, and discussions we had in groups with the program director. Overall, I learned to apply many skills and came out with so much learned about Ghana, its identity as a country, its people, and more. I was able to gain a better perspective and understanding of important health issues prevalent in many countries such as the AIDS/HIV epidemic along with numerous communicable and non-communicable diseases.
