Overview
Prepare to Intern Abroad
Understand the benefits
Seeing and working in the world through Geology offers many exciting benefits that can be life-changing, both professionally and personally. Here are a couple of big highlights.
- Availability anywhere. Geology internships are available with universities conducting purely scientific research as well as corporations involved in everything from oil extraction and production to civil engineering to natural resource preservation.
- Multifaceted experience. Areas of the field will often be blended, providing interns with an interdisciplinary approach to geology and students with the chance to apply their education to the real world.
- Demonstrate knowledge & value. Interns can show prospective employers that they have not only made every effort to expand their knowledge as much as possible, but also that they are flexible and adaptable.
Things to know
Heading on a geology internship worldwide requires extensive research. These internships involve laboratory work, fieldwork, or both. Here are the basics for anyone participating in one.
- Visa and paper requirements. You’ll need a visa and other important information relevant to your program. Professional programs, embassies, and airlines are the best places to get the most current and required material for your experience.
- Cost and logistics. There are plenty of places to intern, but with varying costs of living. Commonly, housing is provided in dormitory-style rooms, homestays, or apartments.
- Cultural and social etiquette. Learn how to say hello—if you don’t know already! More specifically, knowing how the country you’re headed to greets one another. Take an afternoon and research the dos and don'ts of the country you’re visiting.
Locations
Choose a Location
Geology is, by its very nature, a truly global field—the following are just a few highlights.
Australia & New Zealand
For those seeking a combination of fascinating geological phenomena, Australia and New Zealand are both great options for internships abroad. Wind erosion has sculpted the lands of Western Australia for thousands of years, and New Zealand is home to frequent seismic and volcanic activity along several major fault lines.
Scotland
Scotland is another great home to some spectacular geological features. From the central highlands to the spectacular coastlines, Scotland provides many research-based geology internships within some of the finest institutions in Europe. The geology of Scotland has remained relatively consistent for millennia, making it a great location to study soil and rock layering as they relate to geologic time periods. Much can be learned about Earth's history and composition through a geology internship in Scotland.
Greece
Another great option for pursuing a geology internship is Greece! You’ll have plenty of opportunities to explore different landscapes there, ranging from water sources to forested and mountainous areas. There’s plenty of history in Greece’s land to learn from and study, as many have done before. The amount of famous or notable geologic formations is worthy of consideration for young geologists to come and marvel at.
Getting Started
Tips and Advice
Starting a geology internship abroad is an exciting way to gain hands-on experience in diverse geological landscapes and ecosystems. From coastal formations to volcanic fields, you’ll have the chance to work on-site in unique environments. Here’s how to get started on your geology internship journey.
1. Get matched
Use the GoAbroad Online Advisor to get matched with geology internships that align with your field of interest, preferred location, and career goals.
2. Choose a program
Create a MyGoAbroad account to explore, save, and compare geology internship programs around the world, selecting those that offer practical experience and location-specific projects.
3. Decide when to go
Each season offers different geological experiences:
- Summer: Ideal for internships involving fieldwork in coastal, desert, or mountainous regions due to milder weather.
- Fall: Great for studying seasonal changes in ecosystems or soil erosion in forests.
- Winter: Perfect for lab-focused internships, or those in regions with less seasonal impact, such as coastal areas.
- Spring: Suitable for internships in agricultural geology, as it aligns with planting seasons and soil studies.
4. Choose how long to stay
Decide on a duration that matches your academic and professional needs:
- Short-term (1-3 months): Perfect for summer internships or intensive fieldwork projects.
- Semester (3-6 months): Allows for in-depth study and engagement in ongoing research or conservation projects.
- Academic year (6-12 months): Offers comprehensive experience with long-term projects and advanced field studies.
- Long-term (1+ year): Best for students aiming for significant research experience or focused field studies.
5. Funding & Scholarships
Complete the GoAbroad Scholarships & Deals application to connect with funding opportunities for geology internships abroad.
6. Apply
Once you’ve selected a program, submit your application directly through MyGoAbroad. Program coordinators will contact you to guide you through the next steps and answer any questions.
7. Get Your Essentials
Organize your visa, passport, flight, and insurance well in advance, particularly if your program includes international fieldwork in remote locations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the different types of geology internships?
Geology internships vary based on specialization. Fieldwork internships focus on collecting and analyzing geological samples, while lab-based roles emphasize mineral testing and geochemical analysis. Environmental geology internships deal with sustainability and conservation efforts, and petroleum or mining internships explore resource extraction. Some positions integrate GIS mapping and data modeling.
What skills are required to qualify as a geology intern?
A geology intern should have strong analytical skills, proficiency in GIS software, and a solid understanding of rock and mineral identification. Fieldwork requires physical stamina and data collection abilities, while lab roles demand attention to detail in testing procedures. Communication and teamwork are also crucial, especially for reporting findings and collaborating on research projects.
What are the best countries for geology internships abroad?
Top countries for geology internships include Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, and Greece. From volcanic activity and seismic zones to ancient rock formations and diverse landscapes, these destinations offer hands-on research opportunities. Explore geologic time, tectonics, and natural phenomena while gaining international experience in world-renowned environments.
What are the benefits of completing an international geology internship?
An international geology internship enhances global career prospects by exposing interns to different geological environments and methodologies. It provides hands-on experience in diverse terrains, improves cross-cultural communication, and expands professional networks. Additionally, working abroad helps develop adaptability, a key skill in fieldwork-heavy careers.
How can I find paid geology internships abroad?
Securing a paid geology internship abroad involves researching companies in resource-rich regions, reaching out to geological organizations, and exploring government-sponsored training programs. Networking with professionals and university departments can uncover funding opportunities, while scholarships and research grants may help offset costs.
Are remote geology internships common?
Remote geology internships are less common but do exist, particularly in GIS mapping, data analysis, and geospatial modeling. Interns may work on geological databases, assist in remote sensing projects, or contribute to research papers. While they lack fieldwork experience, these internships provide valuable technical skills relevant to geology careers.

What a time to be alive!
September 05, 2026by: Meleah Eickhoff - United StatesThis internship experience was truly incredible! Even though it got off to a rocky start, the Beyond Academy team and I managed to navigate it quickly and adjust. The internship itself allowed me to put practical skills I learned in college to use and my team pushed me to learn more! Aside from the internship, the community was incredible! I made so many friends and went to almost all of the community events to experience the culture and get to know the other interns. Overall, I am so glad that I chose to do Beyond Academy and it is truly an experience I will never forget!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Meleah! While we’re sorry that your internship got off to a rocky start, we’re glad our team could support you in navigating those initial challenges and making the necessary adjustments. It’s wonderful to hear that you were able to put your college skills into practice, continue learning from your host company, and make the most of the Seoul community and cultural events. We also loved the vlog you created about your first week! We loved having you on the program and are so happy it became an experience you’ll never forget!
Taking a chance on Seoul was the best decision of my life!
September 04, 2026by: rose Meers - EnglandApplying for this program was completely spontaneous. I randomly submitted my application without thinking too much of it, and I was genuinely surprised when I got accepted. Choosing between Seoul and Japan was a tricky decision, but Korea snuck up on me—and taking the risk to travel halfway across the world turned out to be worth every single cent. I feel like doing an internship abroad is something every freshman and student should try to do. Gaining real-world experience is incredibly powerful. I loved learning hands-on within my host company, picking up practical tools, and mastering skills that will directly shape my future career. While internships can be challenging and step out of your comfort zone, pushing through taught me to be bold, brave, and just give things a go. Beyond the work, surrounding myself with so many different people from around the world was deeply enriching. I fell in love with Korean culture even more than I expected—from quiet, peaceful moments in traditional tea rooms to wearing hanboks, walking around taking photos, and trying not to trip or slip while exploring the city! I feel incredibly privileged and deeply thankful to the program for accepting me to study, work, and learn what’s across the world. It’s a transformative experience that I will cherish forever!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Rose! We’re thrilled that taking that leap of faith led to such a meaningful experience in Seoul and gave you the opportunity to immerse yourself in Korean culture, connect with people from around the world, and build memories you’ll always cherish. We also really appreciate your honesty about the internship being challenging at times. While international work experiences can come with difficult moments, we’re glad our team was there to support you through those challenges and that you came away feeling more confident, courageous, and equipped with practical skills for your future. It was wonderful having you on the program, and we wish you all the best with everything that comes next!
Great experience!
September 04, 2026by: Serena Tam Letizia - ItalyI spent eight weeks in Seoul, South Korea on an internship arranged for me by Beyond Academy. The Beyond staff on site welcomed me and other fellow “Beyonders” starting their internships within the same week as me with open arms. They were very supportive, friendly, and always available to help us. Thanks to the weekly events scheduled regularly every Thursday and Sunday, I was able to meet and get to know the other Beyonders better, and make memories for a lifetime. I interned for a company and in a field I was quite unfamiliar with, which represented the biggest hurdle I had to overcome during my time in Seoul. Everyone at my host company was incredibly nice, kind, and helpful, though—as a previous Beyonder has already said in their review—I would recommend starting the Beyond Academy placement process months in advance so as to avoid last minute mishaps (to make sure you’re assigned a role in the field that best fits you), and looking into multiple options before saying yes to anything. Overall, it was a great experience that I would definitely highly recommend. I would once again like to thank everyone at Beyond Academy who made it possible!

My internship experience was extremely positive and gave me the opportunity to apply my Data Science and Machine Learning skills to real-world problems and projects. I had the chance to work alongside a talented and supportive team, from whom I learned a lot both technically and professionally. Throughout the internship, I was able to deepen my knowledge, improve my practical skills, and contribute to meaningful projects with a real impact. It was a valuable learning experience that helped me grow significantly and gave me a better understanding of how Machine Learning is applied in a professional environment. Overall, I am very grateful for the experience and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an internship where they can learn, contribute, and grow professionally.

I chose to do an internship in Korea, because I wanted to learn more about the working lifestyle and the culture here, since I feel like in the terms of world ranking, I would say it is very much developing and growing as a business center. I was having my internship for 3 months at a non profit organization. The people that worked at my internship were very sympathetic and welcoming. I went through the Korea GapYear program and they helped me find one, it was a real smooth sailing:) I would definitely recommend KGY!!! to anyone who wants to visit Korea or work in a Korean environment. It also helped to meet new people and discover new cultures. They were always communicating very very rapidly and are very attentive to the needs and expectations of those applied to their programs:)

Hello! My name is Siva from Indonesia and I was an intern in Korea Gap Year for 3 months. My experience working with Korea Gap Year was fun and challenging. September 03, 2026by: Shedy * - NetherlandsProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
Being here alone has made me truly independent, with a mindset shift towards prioritizing myself. Before, I always put others first, but living alone teaches you the importance of self-care because, without it, no one else will do it for you. This experience helped me grow, both personally and professionally, as I adapted to new challenges and learned the value of handling tasks in a professional way, which was a significant departure from my previous academic experiences. I am really grateful for the opportunity was given and would always come back to Korea.

Internship in Nepal
September 03, 2026by: Ewa Szreder - PolandI spent 1.5 months doing an internship at a hospital in Kathmandu. It was a truly valuable and unforgettable experience. I gained practical knowledge, met wonderful people, and had the opportunity to explore amazing places. It was much more than just an internship — it was a chance to learn, grow, experience a new culture, and step outside my comfort zone. I felt very well taken care of throughout the program, and whenever I had questions or problems, there was always someone ready to help. I highly recommend this program!

I really loved this whole experience, from Aotearoa itself to the workplace.
September 03, 2026by: Ella Watson - United StatesProgram: Internships in New Zealand
I have definitely learned an improved sense of work-life balance, improved my writing skills, coding skills (learned Lua and LaTeX) as well as my work-ethic in a different sort of role than I am used to. It helped to be detail-oriented and self-motivated, which are skills I already had but developed in this role. I really loved this whole experience, from Aotearoa itself to the workplace. Everyone was so warm and welcoming, and the workplace environment was relaxed but productive. The country is beautiful, and Wellington was a wonderful home base. The people had to be my favorite part, but I also got to do meaningful work and will hopefully have a publication out of it.

An eye-opening, engaging and rewarding experience!
September 02, 2026by: Samuel Davidson - United KingdomProgram: Virtual/Remote Global Internships Through The Intern Group
As an economics student, I am deeply interested in understanding how rigorous modelling coupled with data-driven analysis can be used to effectuate economic and social change through guiding real-world decision-making. Over the last few years, I have increasingly recognised that unlocking the potential value that this discipline could bring hinges on whether one can discern which models and tools would be appropriate for the given context. To develop my capacity for making substantive judgements, I sought out The Intern Group to match me with a suitable organisation that would enable me to apply the skills and knowledge I've learnt from my time at university. The experience itself was highly challenging and intellectually stimulating; it forced me to think critically about what would constitute a useful deliverable for my partner organisation, in addition to how it should be presented to communicate my findings accessibly. In contrast to university coursework, which is generally evaluated in accordance with a well-defined set of criteria, I was granted the liberty to be creative in how I approached this project. Consequently, I had the chance to engage in divergent thinking and figure out for myself which ideas were feasible and worth developing. Although this strategy requires spending considerable time and energy before making any visible progress, it allowed me to identify the constraints imposed by the available data, understand the incentives faced by different stakeholders and consider what information decision-makers need to act effectively. Learning how to draw upon this framework in order to credibly and reliably inform decision-making within the global agricultural commodity trading market has inspired me to pursue further study and gain new experiences so that I may broaden my exposure while deepening and consolidating my skills and knowledge. I believe that this experience, supplemented by the developmental opportunities and resources offered by The Intern Group, has helped me to clarify my career path, reaffirm my understanding of how the discipline can yield practical insights and realise my own potential in contributing to real-world change.
Amber
September 02, 2026by: Ambrine * - FranceProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I am Amber, french student in international trade and I had a two-months internship at Korea GapYear. Thank you very much to Korea GapYear and to all the staff for allowing me to do my internship in Seoul as I really wanted to. They have been very nice and warm to me since the very first day and helped me integrate into korean life. They have been really understanding and allowed me to gain experience, knowledge and try new things during my internship. Thank you particularly to Olivia who was my tutor during this internship and who helped me not only with my work but with the preparation of my stay in Seoul and my integration into korean culture. They've been really open-minded as I came while I was fasting and that made me feel even more comfortable working with them. What was your funniest moment? Filming a video for applicants going to France (because I am myself) and having to scream to test the mic before each take.
3 month internship in Seoul
September 02, 2026by: Mary * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
I had such a great time with my environmental internship in Seoul! Korea GapYear really makes sure to match up your internship with not only an internship relating to your job perspectives, but also takes into account the personality and culture of the workplace. At first I was nervous because I have heard a lot about how strict the rules are in Korean offices, but luckily my company was so open and welcoming, and not only the workers, but the CEO speak comfortably and in a friendly manner, so I was excited to show up to the office everyday. Overall, if you are looking for an internship provider, KGY does a great job at finding a fitting one for you!

Definitely recommend this program to other people! kgy is so kind and full of commiment kgy offers like a lot of choices to choose from like for me when I applied like there was like an education teaching aspect, a business aspect, a non-profit organization aspect, so literally anyone wants to come to Korea for an internship definitely recommend to go through kgy You guys are the best! Usually in the U.S people are very independent they like to do things on their own, but here in Korea like everyone especially at work, everyone works together as a team like they're so cooperative. At my company other people help me like working as a team I really like that a lot and everyone has an equal role like knowing how to work in a team! This internship has been like a hundred percent good match for me I don't think I would have been able to find something like this without kgy’s help! Thank you

My experience as IT intern at KGY
September 01, 2026by: Alex * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
My internship is going great! I am currently doing an IT internship in Seoul. Time does fly fast. I can’t believe my internship is already coming to an end but I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot of new things and I feel like my Korean language skills as well as my understanding of Korean culture have both significantly improved. Outside of my internship, I have really been enjoying my stay here in Korea. It has been a blast so far. Thank you so much Korea gap year for everything. I appreciate the time that I have spent in Korea.

What an experience!
September 01, 2026by: Lenin Pusparaj - BelgiumProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
Finding an Internship in Korea can be easier with KoreaGapYear, especially as a student having a lot on my plate already. KoreaGapYear was recommended to me by one of my university's classmate students. And that's how my journey with KoreaGapYear began. I worked as a Digital Marketing Intern at KoreaGapYear, where I witnessed the team's ardent efforts to support individuals in achieving their aspirations and goals by offering Internships, Gap Years, Exchange Programs, and Language Programmes. KoreaGapYear is a great idea!
Best Choice for Korea
September 01, 2026by: Ryan * - United StatesProgram: Social Internship in South Korea with Korea Gapyear
My stay in Korea was amazing because of Korea Gap Year. From the first email, the entire staff at Korea Gap Year truly cares about providing you with the best experience possible. I had the privilege of having Bella coordinate my internship/Korean journey and she was fantastic in every way. The internship application process is more thorough than in similar programs meaning, your specific interests and needs are taken into consideration throughout the entire application process (I worked with other programs which were far more vague). In addition, after you are placed in an internship you get to select your housing from several options provided by Korea Gap Year. My housing location was great since it was very close to the subway and plenty of stores/restaurants. While in Korea Bella and Olivia would consistently check in on me and answer any questions I had regarding Korean living. Of course, my internship (in marketing) was perfect and exactly what I was looking for. My host company's staff were all very friendly even taking me out on several social activities. I cannot recommend Korea Gap Year enough and would suggest anyone still deciding to at least interview with them and I promise you will not be disappointed!
Life-Changing experience

Going to Seoul with Beyond was a great experience
September 01, 2026by: Daniel Perkins - EnglandI was in Seoul for about 8 weeks on an internship and it was an incredible experience that I definitely won’t be forgetting. My personal experience with my placement was great, the work I had to do was in a field I was interested in, my coworkers in the company were very nice and supportive and the overall work environment was great. There were multiple social events planned by Beyond every week and so these events as well as the free time I had on the weekends made it very easy to make the most of my time in South Korea. Overall this experience was fantastic and I would definitely recommend it.
