How to Earn A Degree Abroad

How to go to college in another country

Getting a Master’s abroad is probably the most popular way to get a degree overseas, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go abroad as an undergrad! If you’re wondering how to go abroad for college though, it won’t be as straightforward as it is at home. There are different entrance exams to take, visas to apply for, and possibly required foreign language skills. Don’t let this discourage you though! The right degree program abroad will provide an advisor to guide you through the process.

Here’s how to get your undergrad or graduate degree abroad:

  • Research programs. You may have a dream school abroad in mind already, but it’s just a pipe dream if it turns out you’re not eligible to apply for it. While you’re certainly free to apply for degree programs around the world, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll automatically qualify. Find out if you’re required to speak a certain language or if you’re even eligible for a student visa. These kinds of details vary from country to country, so don’t hesitate to directly reach out to a school or program in order to get your questions answered.
  • Take entrance exams. Sadly, the SAT and ACT don’t really qualify you to go to college anywhere expect the USA. Entrance exams differ everywhere, so find out which ones you’ll need to take before applying for your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree abroad. You may also need to take a language test to prove your speaking proficiency in the language of instruction.
  • Apply to degree programs. Keep in mind that not every country runs on the same semester schedule as the US. Application deadlines vary from country to country and program to program. Once you know you qualify, you don’t want to blow your opportunity to get a degree abroad by missing a deadline! Apply as early as possible...and then try to remain patient (and calm) as you wait to hear back about your acceptance.
  • Apply for a visa. This step may be concurrent with the previous depending on visa and program restrictions. Either way, it’s very likely that you’ll need to prove your acceptance to an institution of higher learning in order to qualify for a student visa, no matter where you’re headed. Your program advisor will know exactly how and when you should apply for your visa, but it doesn’t hurt to do a little independent research on your own!

Frequently Asked Questions

Applying for college abroad is similar to applying at home. You'll need to research admissions requirements depending on both the university and the host country. For example, required entrance exams and language requirements for studying abroad vary around the world.

Major pros of studying in an international college include language-learning opportunities, more advanced coursework, and lower tuition than in the U.S. Potential cons include higher living costs and language barriers.

Many countries offer free tuition to their citizens and residents, but it can be difficult to find 100% free tuition for international students. Start your search with universities in Germany, Iceland, and France; you'll find the lowest fees there. You may also consider applying for scholarships or preparing to secure student loans to turn your dream of studying abroad into a reality.

Amazing if you want a Masters but also want to learn spanish

I’ve been here for a term now and I’ve had such a great time. The classes are small and intimate, and you get hands on experience with teachers who are experts in their field (I am in a class of 4 students), whilst also having 1 hour and 40 minutes of Spanish classes everyday! It’s a great opportunity to learn Spanish whilst also getting a Masters in Business Administration. There are no courses like this!
