A Guide to Industrial Design Degrees Abroad
Why Earn Your Degree Abroad
Business has become a truly international study. From obtaining raw materials through the manufacturing process to finally getting your product on the shelves, formerly domestic supply lines are every year becoming more of a global phenomena. By earning your industrial design degree abroad within this backdrop, you will be setting yourself up for big success by learning to see the world in a broad lens and making international contacts everywhere you go. The idea is in your head, now all you need to do is take the steps to make it happen.
Locations
Because it a capital-intensive field, in pursuing your industrial design degree abroad you will generally be limited to countries with large or advanced enough economies to merit offering the course of study. You may be able to find some degree programs in smaller or developing countries as well, but at large this academic discipline is much more common at major universities within the industrialized world.
Within the English-speaking world, some of the most popular potential destinations where you might choose to pursue a degree abroad in industrial design include the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. All of these countries boast world-leading universities, influential policy makers, and powerful business sectors, which can make for a great environment to begin your creative entrepreneurial adventure.
Beyond the English speaking world, other countries with dynamic economies ranging all the way from China to Germany to Mexico can also be very fruitful destinations where to pursue a degree abroad in industrial design. You will usually have to pick up a second language in order to enroll full time for a degree within any of these countries, but that has certainly never hurt anyone’s career prospects after graduation, has it?
Academics & Degrees
Industrial design may be a niche field of study, but it incorporates a comprehensive number of related disciplines into its fold. If you are pursuing an undergraduate degree abroad in industrial design, for example, you will likely be taking classes within a diversity of relevant fields such as drawing, business, sustainability, and environmental science, in supplement to your normal course of studies.
At the Graduate level, you will then have the opportunity to move on and study within a more focused element of industrial design. Some examples of specific graduate degrees you might pursue include package design, product service-systems design, and other such related subfields. Industrial design degrees abroad at the undergraduate level generally require three or four years of study, while graduate degrees will require one or two.
Different schools around the world may have varying degree structures and prerequisites for enrollment, so explore a wide diversity of programs to get a feel for where might work the best according to your qualifications and interests. Then after graduating, you will be ready to work with engineers, marketers, and manufacturers all around the world to make your product vision a reality!
Benefits & Challenges
Go Global. The world is connecting rapidly, and if you want to make it in a field as competitive as industrial design, it’s best to jump on the wave early. It’s time to start thinking globally!
Creative Influence. There’s nothing that sparks inspiration quite like travel. Being on the move, learning to see things in a new way, doing things you never would or could at home; these experiences will show in your work.
Be Free. Last but not least, if this was not obviously embedded in the venture, earning your degree abroad in industrial design will be a ton of fun. Journeying alone out into the world is freeing like few experiences are.
Uprooting from home to earn your industrial design degree abroad may be an intimidating prospect, but once you make the commitment to go, then the world becomes your workshop. What you can create, and what you can do, only time will tell.

Studying my bachelor's in Beijing was the best decision
June 16, 2026by: Nina Koskinen - FinlandProgram: Bachelor's & Master's Degrees in China | Apply with GAC
I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.
