A Guide to Degrees Abroad in Denmark

A small Scandinavian country situated just above Germany in northern Europe, Denmark is regarded as one of the most free and equal countries in the world, with one of the highest standards of living to match. Earning your degree abroad in Denmark is the opportunity to embrace a progressive society which was one of the originators of the welfare state model, amidst a friendly citizenry and enriching culture which won’t cease to intrigue you during the duration of your studies abroad. Are you ready for the adventure?

Denmark is a relatively small country with just under 6 million citizens. It is the southernmost of the Scandinavian nations, sitting just under Sweden and Norway on the European mainland, between the North and Baltic Seas. Denmark shares a common heritage with the other Scandinavian countries, dating from the Vikings in the middle ages through the Kalmar Union afterward to Denmark’s own independence in the 19th century.

Copenhagen, the country’s capital and largest city, is the most popular place for international students to earn their degree abroad in Denmark. Having roots as a Viking fishing village, Copenhagen became Denmark’s capital in the 15th century, and continues to this day to serve as the political, economic, and cultural nucleus of the county. Copenhagen is also home to a handful of Denmark’s top universities, including the University of Copenhagen and the Technical University of Denmark.

Aarhus, home of Aarhus University which is also widely acknowledged as one of the best schools in Europe, is another popular destination where to earn a degree abroad in Denmark. Settled on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula, Aarhus is Denmark’s second largest city, and can be an equally rewarding place to live abroad as you pursue your degree in the country.

Academics & Degrees

While it is a small country, Denmark has a very high quality education system, and so attracts international students from throughout the continent and across the world to its doorstep.  The university system is run entirely by the state and boasts some of the best schools in the world, so your opportunities to earn a degree abroad in Denmark are plenty.

As a disclaimer, you will likely have to pass a language proficiency exam in order to be admitted into a Danish university. While there are some English-taught degree programs offered throughout Denmark, the vast majority are taught in Danish, and so learning the local language should be a top priority if you intend on studying abroad in Denmark. Other prerequisites may restrict enrollment among international students as well, so be sure to take these into account on a school-to-school basis during your search.

While enrollment at a local university will therein enable you to pursue any degree abroad in Denmark that is offered at your host university, some of the most popular subjects for international students tend to be in fields such as political science, business, history, environmental studies, and language studies. You are in no way limited to these areas, however, and should feel free to explore as many different degree programs in Denmark as suit your interest!

Scholarships & Costs

Higher education in Denmark is free for Danish students and also for students coming from within the European Union. If you are an international student from outside of the European Union then you will likely have to pay a small tuition fee, though education still remains affordable compared to most other Western European countries.

Denmark itself, however, is an expensive place to live. Most general costs of living reflect the many free social services that citizens of Denmark receive, so expect to be living on a budget as a student visiting the country. Accommodation & Visas

Depending on the length of your degree program and where you study abroad in Denmark, you will likely have a variety of housing options to choose from as an international student. Many choose to live in campus dormitories at the outset of their studies, with the opportunity to move off campus later on. Homestays are sometimes offered for shorter degree programs in Denmark, as well.

If you are travelling from outside of the European Union, then you will also have to apply for a student visa in order to earn a degree abroad in Denmark. Usually your host university will endorse you throughout this process after you are accepted for enrollment; for more information in the meantime, you can check out our Danish Embassy Directory.
