A Guide to Computer Science Degrees Abroad
Why Earn Your Degree Abroad
Informational technology and computational science only continue to grow more deeply embedded within our global infrastructure, and there is no indication that this trend will reverse anytime soon. Travelling to earn your computer science degree abroad will train you in an invaluable skillset that not only will blow the job market wide open upon graduation, but will instill in you a deeper understanding of the manner by which our entire world is becoming increasingly digitalized in nature and scope.
Locations
While a relatively young field in comparison to most traditional academic disciplines, computer science has quickly become one of the most widely endorsed degrees in global education. Because the subject matter also tends to transcend language barriers more so than others, the opportunities for where to earn your computer science degree abroad are accordingly vast.
Within the English speaking world, Canada, Australia, England, and the United States all lay claim to a select portion of the most prestigious computer science programs in the world. These countries are also home to many universities with large international student populations, so pursuing enrollment in any of these places is a conveniently fluid process.
Outside of the English speaking world, countries such as China, France, and Germany also offer a plethora of highly prestigious institutions where to earn a computer science degree abroad. Enrollment in a full degree program within these countries may be contingent on your language comprehension, though studying computer science will generally require less fluency upon the outset than other subjects.
These countries represent just a small handful of the potential destinations where you might look into earning a computer science degree abroad; research as many different programs in as many different places as possible while making your decision!
Academics & Degrees
Computer science is a broad and interdisciplinary field which encompasses traditional branches of mathematics, electrical engineering, systems theory, computational languages, and applied information technology. At the undergraduate level you will likely be required to enroll in an array of prerequisite courses within a diversity of these different subject areas, in order to lay the basic groundwork for a fundamental understanding of the field.
If you move on to pursue a Master’s or PhD abroad in computer science, then you will usually have the opportunity to specialize within a particular branch of the field, while also beginning to delve into your own research and fieldwork. One of the most exciting things about computer science is that it continues to evolve more rapidly and regularly than perhaps any other academic field, affording students the rare opportunity to make a genuine footprint with their contributions.
Generally an undergraduate degree abroad in computer science will require three to five years of study, while advanced degrees can last an additional several years on top of this. Different countries around the world will vary in their internal educational structures, meaning that the precise duration of degree tracks and type of degrees conferred may differ as well depending on where you study abroad.
Benefits & Challenges
Global Prospects. Because the language of computer science is largely universal, the fact that you will be making tons of connections during the course of your degree abroad can set you up for some serious global job prospects after graduation.
Change of Pace. By definition, technology is always changing. Earning your computer science degree abroad, as opposed to within the comforts of home, will help instill in you a deeper appreciation for the diverse and ephemeral nature of the field (along with the larger world it is embedded in).
Applicability. Earning your computer science degree abroad will equip you with a fundamental skillset that you can continue on to work with anywhere else in the world. So why not turn your studies into an adventure to begin with?

I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.
