How to Intern Abroad in Texas

Prepare for an Internship

Set goals

Texas has plenty to offer, but it helps to know what you’re looking for before you get started.

  • Clarify your why. Do you want a portfolio piece, a job offer, or just to test-drive a career path?
  • Chase growth. Skills matter more than titles. Look for hands-on roles that stretch you.
  • Get local. Eat tacos from a food truck in San Antonio, catch a show in Austin, or go boot-scootin’ in Houston. This is where work meets play.

Understand the benefits

Texas isn’t just big on land, but it’s also big on potential.

  • Serious career power. With massive sectors in energy, tech, health, and media, you’ll find real work that makes a real impact.
  • Built-in community. Southern friendliness isn’t a myth. You’ll find mentors, connections, and after-work buddies fast.
  • Weekend wonderland. Whether you’re into hiking, rodeos, food festivals, or music scenes, your weekends are never boring.

Things to know

A little preparation goes a long way when you're heading into a new place, especially one as varied as Texas.

  • Work culture - Offices tend to blend casual and professional. Be on time, communicate clearly, and match the vibe without overthinking it.
  • Getting around - Most places are built for driving. If you're not in a walkable area, rideshares, carpools, or bikes will be your best bet.
  • Cost of living - It really depends on the city. Austin leans pricier, while places like San Antonio or Fort Worth are generally more affordable.
