How to Intern Abroad in Australia
Overview
Prepare for an Internship
Set goals
Make the most of your internship in Australia by creating some goals! Depending on your field, they could look different than peers, but some great starting ones are:
- Consider your academic strengths to help narrow your decision. Recognizing these strengths can guide you toward a career that aligns with your natural abilities and interests.
- Identify qualities you seek in peers and mentors, then develop those traits in yourself. Building relationships with supportive individuals can foster your growth and open doors to new opportunities.
- Focus on a specific professional skill, such as networking or a hard or soft skill. Concentrating on targeted skills leads to measurable progress, boosts confidence, and increases competitiveness.
Understand the benefits
Interning in Australia has plenty of perks! For anyone heading down under, you can expect the following:
- International diversity is present. Since Sydney is such a popular tourist and study-abroad destination, you will be exposed to international diversity, which will greatly enhance your chances of employment abroad.
- Fun attractions. There is no shortage of natural attractions to enjoy for free. Whether you’re cliff diving, relaxing on the beach, or team building, there’s fun to be had.
- Language variation. With English as the main language of Australia, it’s generally easy to get around. Be prepared for some colloquial and regional accents and vocabulary; you’ll pick it up in no time.
Things to know
Wherever you intern in Australia, there are a few basics everyone should know about before their trip.
- Cost of living. Australia is a relatively expensive destination due to its robust economy, so it's wise to create a budget and review what your program may cover.
- Cultural etiquette. Australians value personal space; when standing in lines or queues, keep some distance to ensure no one feels uncomfortable.
- Legal requirements. Many internships help with obtaining a visa. Be sure to obtain the required vaccinations and health insurance, as recommended by your internship provider.
Location
Choose a Location
Wherever you head, know that Australian internships are great opportunities and reflect well on your resume! Here are a few popular cities.
Sydney
Ranked among the top 15 cities for tourism over the past 14 years, Sydney is home to some of the top internship industries in tourism and hospitality. The Sydney Opera House is a major component of the country’s international tourism and also reflects and contributes to the national theatre, art, and music culture.
Brisbane
The city’s economy is growing faster than any other Australian city, making economics an excellent field for internships in Brisbane. Brisbane is home to several top universities, including the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology. Both schools specialize in research and technology, offering opportunities for lab and research internships.
Melbourne
Interning in Melbourne with a professor in any field at the University of Melbourne would certainly stand out on your resume to any future employer. Melbourne is the birthplace of the Australian film and television industry and continues to host international film festivals, making it an ideal location for an Australian film and media industry internship.
Fields
Choose a Field
The available fields vary widely in subject and type of work. There’s an option for everyone. A few great choices are:
Film and Media
Australia has a rich art and culture that attracts people from around the world. Film is by far the most popular area of interest, therefore creating a high demand for film production. Interning in Australia in these fields will expose you to a thriving art scene that will open up countless networking opportunities.
Graphic Design
There’s a huge area within Australia's arts and culture scene that calls for graphic designers. Fields such as fashion, adventure, and outdoor companies need branding, logos, and prints—ideal for anyone looking to gain experience in the field and explore an additional creative area to work in.
Marketing
Given Australia's progressive art culture, there’s a need to promote the entertainment available. As such, marketing is another popular area for internships in Australia. It’s a great way to boost many different economies, including tourism.

Australian media & film internship sharpened my marketing and pitching skills
August 18, 2026by: Cassidy LampkinProgram: Affordable Internships in Australia | Intern Abroad HQ
I feel a lot more confident in my marketing skills after my 9-week Media & Film Production internship in Australia. Now, I have a better understanding of corporate environments, professional dynamics, and writing techniques. I was able to adjust my academic writing style to one that fits within the theme of marketing copy, which gave me more options when it comes to professional projects. I also have a much better idea of marketing perspectives I can bring to my work in film. Now, I know how to present approaches to specific demographics and how to appeal to general audiences. The transferable skills & practical experience gained will be a great addition to my resume as a filmmaker. I will able to contribute to strategies going forward with confidence and attention to detail in my film marketing pitches.

Whiskey Time!
August 10, 2026by: Elena Gao - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
I had such a wonderful experience working at a Whiskey Distillery in Dublin. The staff were all so genuinely nice and made me feel right at home. Rotating through the cafe, reception, and the back bar allowed me to understand all the different phases of a working distillery, and meeting the bosses was a great addition to the program. Dublin attracts so much tourism, I really enjoyed meeting so many different people from all over the world at my work. It felt like a true mix of diversity, which allowed me to learn so many unique things from everyone I encountered. I was also incredibly glad to use my Mandarin skills to help out. On my days off, I had the best time exploring Dublin, traveling around Ireland, and adventuring into other European countries. It was a beautiful journey both professionally and personally!

Connect-123 Internship Experience
July 28, 2026by: David Scheel - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
Connect-123 did an amazing job connecting me with an internship company that was similar to my interests. During my remote internship that was based out of Cape Town, I felt valued and that I played an important role in helping and shaping my clients and my company's future. My supervisor and his personal assistant were super kind, understanding, positive, and respectful towards me, and I felt very appreciated by them. Connect-123 did an amazing job of offering career-readiness tips and advice, including having three Zoom call sessions about developing different career-development skills that were very interactive and engaging. Carla, my program and internship coordinator, did an outstanding job communicating and helping me find an internship company that combined my values, interests, and career goals, as it was a very smooth process and transition. During my two-month internship, she would check in with me often, offer me advice, and be very supportive and encouraging to me. I highly recommend Connect-123 to anyone who is looking for an organization that will help set them up for career success.
Once in a lifetime!
July 27, 2026by: Andrea Rojas Norato - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
I have had an amazing experience interning abroad in Barcelona. It was wonderful to see how passionate those at the non-profit I worked in were in regards to giving kids at the Casal a summer full of fun memories and connections. I got to learn so much from the kids I worked with and got to learn more about myself. Additionally, everyone from my host site to those in connect-123 were always really supportive throughout my time here, so not once did I feel afraid of being in another country so far from home for the first time!!
University of Cape Town Immunology Research Lab Intern
July 25, 2026by: Reema Zeiadah - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
My internship at the University of Cape Town in South Africa was an eye opener to both research and a new culture. At my internship I gained new skills including RNA Isolation, PBMC Isolation, ELISA, MDM Generation, Graphpad Prism and much more. I was also able to shadow an endocrinologist at the Groote Schuur hospital which introduced me to healthcare outside of the U.S. Shadowing in a public hospital opened my eyes to what being a doctor really is. It was chaotic, stressful, busy, but it also showed me that people of the same community suffer from common conditions that are uncommon in the U.S. Outside of the lab and clinic, and I was also able to attend and assist at a research foundation conference here in Cape Town. Though this conference was focused on sustainability, I was honored to attend and learn more about how research expands around the world, bringing together different continents and countries for one purpose. Overall, this internship experience allowed me to gain a better understanding of what research is, but also what healthcare is like in a different country. If anyone is thinking about coming to Cape Town, I recommend seeing the “not so pretty” side and learning about the history behind the mother city. It really opens your eyes to something you might not have known before.
Most Rewarding Experience Ever
July 23, 2026by: Sai Shankar Sadhu - United StatesProgram: Internships in Melbourne, Australia
This was the most amazing and most fun experience I have ever had. This is the first time I have traveled alone to a country I have never been to before, and it's been alone from family in a whole new place for a long time. Most people view interning abroad as just a resume builder, but it's honestly so much more than that. I've really grown as a person by becoming more independent and self-reliant. I've gone on amazing and cool excursions and made so many new friends. I've gotten to really love Australia over the couple of weeks I spent here, and I honestly wish I had spent more time there. I felt very sad to leave, and all of the other interns felt the same way. Australia is truly a wonderful place to live in, and I hope my future holds a place for Australia.
Amazing Summer
July 22, 2026by: Judith Judith Rojas - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two months in Barcelona interning at a foundation whose mission is to create transformative impact across the city of Barcelona not only for people in situations of vulnerability, but also for the volunteers who serve them. Working closely on grant management and volunteer coordination, I gained hands-on experience with the operational backbone of nonprofit work. As someone interested in public policy, this internship gave me a ground-level view of how policy and civic mobilization intersect in practice. I want to thank Sophie and Brenda, whose support made this experience what it was; guiding us, supporting us every day, and matching us to internships that fit us so well. This internship taught me so much about the challenges vulnerable communities face and the power of organized volunteerism to meet them. Working in grant management and volunteer coordination showed me how thoughtful funding decisions and resourceful organizing can translate directly into impact on people's lives. It opened my eyes to different ways of life and to a city deeply committed to mobilizing its citizens for good. Barcelona will always be a second home for me, and I'm so thankful to have taken part in this experience and gotten to know so many wonderful people along the way.

July 22, 2026by: Cristian Aguirre - United StatesProgram: Global Internship & Volunteer Programs with Connect-123!
I had an amazing experience both visiting and working in Barcelona. I especially appreciated the events throughout the program; being able to make some friends from the States, as well as meeting good friends while working, was a great experience. I took advantage of my weekends to travel as much as possible and couldn't be more appreciative of this opportunity. Thanks, Connect, for a great time!

Fostered Professional Growth and Confirmed a Passion for International Marketing with an internship in Tokyo
June 01, 2026by: Erica Refugio MartinezMy Marketing & Communications internship in Tokyo (Japan) was one of my most rewarding experiences for my professional and academic journey. What I enjoyed the most was the opportunity to fully immerse myself in a new culture that I became deeply fond of while working alongside professionals who supported me in my career aspirations by giving me the independence and challenge to develop and lead work initiatives. This experience also allowed me to observe Japanese culture and develop an appreciation and understanding for their work ethic and respect that I will continue to implement in my future projects and in my personal life. Most importantly, this internship helped me confirm my love for traveling and my future career in international marketing.
Amazing experience in Cusco!
May 29, 2026by: David EsquerI'm a current intern placed in Cusco, Peru through IVHQ, doing marketing and communications with a local organization. The process from application to arrival was clear and well organized, and the support has been genuinely responsive. When I've reached out, I've had the best experience with REAL people replying fast and actually being helpful. The placement itself has been the highlight: meaningful work, a great host organization, and an experience that's pushed my Spanish from conversational to fluent. If you're a student considering an internship abroad in Latin America, this is a legitimate and well run way to do it.
I am genuinely grateful that I took the leap despite my initial hesitation, because it became one of the most impactful and transformative experiences of my life so far.
May 08, 2026by: Casey Ann DeanI truly wish I had spent the full 12 weeks in Ireland rather than only four. However, within that short time, I tried to fully immerse myself into the experience as much as possible. One of the things I appreciated most was that my internship was genuinely hands-on rather than simply shadowing someone the entire time. I was trusted with real responsibilities, projects, and problem-solving opportunities that allowed me to grow professionally and personally in ways I honestly did not expect. Before arriving, I had fears and uncertainties about whether I would be capable enough, experienced enough, or even if my age would affect how I fit into the program. Those fears quickly faded once I became immersed in the experience itself. This internship challenged me to adapt to unfamiliar environments, problem-solve independently, communicate within a new culture, and gain confidence in my own abilities. I was able to work on projects involving social media, marketing strategy, Google Ads troubleshooting, tourism promotion, and organizational systems while also learning more about Irish culture, history, and daily life. Personally, the experience had an even greater impact on me than I expected. Living abroad helped me become more independent, adaptable, confident, and willing to step outside of my comfort zone. It also deeply inspired me creatively as a writer and future author by exposing me to new places, stories, perspectives, and experiences. I am incredibly grateful that I took the leap and participated in the program despite my initial fears and uncertainties. It became one of the most impactful experiences of my life so far. If I were to offer one area of constructive feedback, it would be encouraging more visible student testimonials, experiences, and promotional content surrounding the program itself. Before applying, it was sometimes difficult to find detailed firsthand experiences or examples from previous participants, which initially made the program feel harder to fully research and trust from the outside looking in. Because of that, I think encouraging more students to share their internship experiences publicly through testimonials, videos, social media content, or alumni stories could greatly help future participants feel more confident and reassured during the decision-making process. Now having completed the program myself, I absolutely would recommend it to others and plan to share my own experience as well. I am genuinely grateful that I took the leap despite my initial hesitation, because it became one of the most impactful and transformative experiences of my life so far.
It didn’t even feel like I left home (in a good way)
May 08, 2026by: Tristan Price - United StatesI was so worried about living abroad and my program was literally on the other side of the world. Somehow, someway, my company made me feel like I had been on the team the entire time. I was in office every day I could. The camaraderie between not just myself and my coworkers, but my boss as well. I don’t even think they were trying that hard. They are just fantastic people. Not to mention my company had regular events centered around interactions with each other. What a phenomenal group of people!
This experience helped me grow in ways that go beyond just career development.
March 27, 2026by: Audrey WilliamsProgram: Affordable Internships in Australia | Intern Abroad HQ
What I enjoyed most about this internship was not just the professional experience, but the overall environment and people I was surrounded by. My host mum played a huge role in making the experience so positive. She was incredibly welcoming, supportive, and made me feel comfortable living in a new country. Having that kind of home environment made it much easier to adjust and allowed me to fully focus on both my internship and personal growth. Professionally, this internship gave me real insight into the real estate industry and helped me understand how things operate day-to-day in a fast-paced, international setting. I developed stronger communication, adaptability, and organizational skills, and learned how to navigate a professional environment with more confidence. Personally, living in a new place pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. I became more independent, open-minded, and confident in my ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations. Overall, this experience helped me grow in ways that go beyond just career development. It strengthened my confidence in myself and my ability to handle new challenges.
My Business Development internship in Japan was a deeply rewarding experience that accelerated both my professional skills and cross-cultural growth
March 26, 2026by: Samuel ShearsMy Business Development internship in Japan was an incredibly rewarding experience. Best decision I made to develop my skills via a remote internship
March 18, 2026by: Mylo DuongI really enjoyed Remote Marketing & Communications internship (hosted out of Japan) as the internship tasks that I did is meaningful to the host organization and me. Working in a tropical paradise
February 24, 2026by: Felicitas Hahn - GermanyProgram: Australia Hotel & Tourism Jobs
I spent a total of 5 months in Australia and did an internship in an Australian hostel for about 3 months. I arrived in Australia at the end of November and started working on one of the Great Barrier Reef islands a few days later. I was an intern supporting the reception team and worked 2 days a week. My main tasks included checking guests in and out, sorting car and snorkel hires and answering calls and emails as well as helping out on the bar whenever needed. I’ve never worked a reception job before but everyone was super friendly and helped me whenever I had any questions. As I was living on site, I also quickly made friends among the other staff and spent most of my free time with them. After a few weeks I decided to pick up some paid shifts in housekeeping mostly to keep myself busy but also to get a little extra money for my travels after my internship. At the very beginning of my time in Australia, I was really overwhelmed by basically everything - it was too hot, too many people and everything seemed so exhausting. However I am really glad that regardless of how I felt, I still made an effort to go out with my roommates, I still made sure to spend lots of time with all the other staff and now, a few months later, they are like my family far from home and I couldn’t be happier to have met them. Apart from the social aspect, living and working on a tropical island feels unreal as well - waking up with a beach right in front of my room or spending my days off doing hikes where I see koalas is something I could’ve never imagined back home. I would definitely recommend doing an internship like that or working abroad for some time, because it not only teaches you what having a job in a different country is like, it also is a one in a lifetime experience of meeting people from all around the world, all in the same situation as oneself.
