Make Your Gap Year Count, Teaching Music in Uganda!

Take a break from school, fire up your musical passion, and teach music lessons to underprivileged communities in Uganda. Whether your guitar playing is recreational or you're pursuing a career in music, we want you to volunteer with us. Music is ingrained in daily life here. Rural villages echo with groups making music, singing, and using jerrycans as drums. East Africa is the perfect setting for any musician to explore their art form. Music and performance training are powerful ways to boost self-esteem and confidence. It gives young people a safe, productive hobby that helps keep them off the streets and away from harmful influences. Instead, it promotes connection with positive role models, fun learning, and a skill that’s both enriching and potentially profitable. Unfortunately, music education is often out of reach here. Lessons are considered a luxury, and low-income families simply cannot afford them. With our program, you’ll teach music lessons and lead community activities. Volunteers love their time here—gaining valuable life and CV experience while making a real, lasting impact.

Best Gap Year I Could've Asked For

March 05, 2026by: Dora Rubin - United States

Program: Morocco & Spain Semester: Culture & Borderlands (Gap)

10

While on my Dragons program, I learned not only about the world around me and new places and people, but I also gained confidence in myself. My program had a focus on cultural immersion and understanding how Morocco and Spain are connected. This was very interesting to learn about, and we did this via language lessons, homestays, and meeting local people. Overall, I realized that the world is much more interconnected than I thought, and I have been inspired to continue traveling and to immerse myself in different cultures intentionally. Luckily, I have also found a global community that is like-minded through Where There Be Dragons, and I feel that after my program, I have a whole new world of opportunities available to me.
